His defense and overall workrate has gotten better this year, but on the offensive side he looks more or less the same as he did in 22-23.

The move to LW hasn't really affected things a whole lot for him, IMO.
Thanks! Some improvement is good, and as Beard said above, McCarthy is garbage...they need to fire him this offseason. But if Bordeleau doesn't improve significantly (especially on offense) in the next 2 seasons under a new coach, he's probably a bust.

Eklund didn't look overly great either.
He was younger, and he stepped up his game over the offseason where Bordeleau has (apparently) stagnated.

At this point, I think it is improbable that Bordeleau will turn into a top-6 forward. So the question is can he round out his game and become a good third-line center? Can he improve a little and become a solid fourth-liner? Or is he destined to be a poor man's Ryan Carpenter?

My opinion on McCarthy hasn't changed. I think any concerns over him hindering player development are a little overblown. But he has yet to show he's capable of coaching winning hockey, which I'm pretty sure is something the Sharks wanted from the Cuda, otherwise why would they have signed all these vets?

Second year now and his team still has poor defensive structure and weak breakout play. Our defensemen seem to be individually talented, but our defensive zone play is so disorganized. If we miss the playoffs, which does seem to be a possibility since we can't get any kind of consistency going, he should be gone.

The consensus seems to be that Roy Sommer couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag, yet when he was given his strongest roster in 16-17, he won a division title. He made the playoffs a couple times with rosters weaker than this. The Cuda have not had all of the weapons I thought they would at the start of the year but there is absolutely enough on this team to be competitive. Instead of being barely above the last place Gulls.

I honestly dont think McCarthy lasts the offseason. Hes not Griers guy and isnt doing anything special.

Teams just don't fire AHL coaches midseason for performance reasons. Feels like the only way you can get a change there is something like the NHL coaching staff getting fired, and the AHL guy being given an assistant spot on the NHL club.

Wait, really? I've never followed the Cuda closely, but you're saying the only way to get rid of an AHL coach in the offseason is to "promote him" out of the job into an NHL assistant job??

So you don't think it's possible that Grier replaces the AHL coaching staff in the offseason? Truly I'm curious. I have no idea about the AHL.

Ah geez, I misread the post I quoted as saying he didn't think McCarthy would last the season. Ignore that one.

No, definitely, the offseason would be the time to look at making a coaching change/firing.

After all that I said about Drysdale today.

I can’t tell who I like this better for. I think it might be the Ducks, but honestly I'm not huge on either Gauthier or Drysdale. Because the Ducks can actually play Gauthier on the wing where he belongs, they’re getting better value. Drysdale is probably a top-4 RHD which is valuable but he’s always hurt and I do t think he’s all that good. Cam Fowler 2.0 IMO (which is still a long-term top-4 D, just not a #1).

Apparently Gauthier didn’t want to sign with the Flyers, which is crazy.

It’s also fascinating that the Ducks got rid of their only top-10 pick that didn’t live up to his draft position.

Some teams really have all the luck. Getting to trade spare parts for a guy who has great tools to play with their collection of more cerebral prospects. Wouldn't at all be surprised if they win the lottery for a Celebrini-Carlsson one two punch for the next couple decades.

Maybe this will make some of the people who mocked Grier for drafting Smith “just because he’s from Boston” think twice. Their longstanding relationship means we absolutely don’t need to worry about getting him signed.

Hey man, dont be so sure about that.

Im sure at this moment Willy is getting tips from his bff and college buddy Cutter Gauthier on how to not play for the Shorks.

Can teams make changes to the conditions of a traded draft choice if another trade is made with the same team before those conditions can be met?

For example, can the Sharks trade a depth D to NJ and have the return be that the 2024 conditional 1st from the Meier trade becomes a guaranteed 1st? So in essense it would be the Depth D + NJ 2nd <-> NJ 1st.

Getting shut out in Boston while Smith was watching was brutal for the team
I mean it was brutal for the fans, but I really think Smith is smart enough to understand. Like, would you rather be a Sharks prospect, or a Caps prospect right now? Leonard is going to enter into a terrible situation in WSH where they're going to have to blow it all up once Ovie's Gretzky goal chase is over. Do you really want to be a NYR prospect like Perreault? They're amazing right now, but what about in 4-5 years when you're looking to sign your first RFA agreement?

Pathetic move by the Flyers org to smear Gauthier on the way out. If they really wanted to teach him a lesson why not force him to stay in college for another 2.5 years? It’s not like Drysdale or the 2nd round pick is gonna move the needle for them. Hell based on the Adam Fox trade they probably could have gotten at least a 2nd just for trading his signing rights after his senior year.

Smith was interviewed a while back by a podcast (I forget the name) and literally said he knows SJ is rebuilding but it's exciting. I think he knows he's in a good position to almost be handed a good role once he signs.

To be fair they did keep it quiet for quite a while knowing he didn't want to sign there. Smart move by them to not make that public and change his perceived value. Why would they settle for a 2nd in 2.5 years instead of getting rid of him now for a yound D and a 2nd? Apparently they offered Gauthier to MTL for 5th overall last June and MTL said no. Maybe Drysdale was just the best offer.

This proves drafting Michkov and "just trading him later on" would've been a terrible idea.

100% agreed on Michkov.

I feel like the Flyers probably kept it quiet because they thought they could convince Gauthier to sign then gave up once he ghosted them at the WJC.

This doesn't prove that because certain crucial details are different with Michkov than it is with Gauthier. There's a deadline to sign Gauthier. There is not one for Michkov. The talent difference is also pretty large, imo. Still, getting a productive young NHL defenseman and a 2nd round pick is a good return for that sort of circumstance. Michkov would return more.
