I don't see Broberg as a significant asset if they are trying to dump Campbell's contract. Broberg is a throwin piece in a trade with Campbell. I'd insist on the 1st or they're not going to dump campbell.
I think there’s enough there between Broberg’s size, speed, age, pedigree and AHL track record that I value him higher than say the Oilers 2024 lotto protected 1st. Doubt we could get both as it would make more sense for Edmonton to just ride out the season then buy Campbell out.

I would probably do Rutta and Chrona for Broberg, Campbell and the Oilers’ 2024 2nd.

I'd want Petrov included in any deal with the Oilers
To SJ:
Philip Broberg
Jack Campbell
Matvei Petrov
EDM 2024 2nd

To EDM:
Magnus Chrona
Mitchell Russell
Jan Rutta

Let’s get central registry on the phone.

I think valuing Broberg more than the Oiler's lotto protected 1st is absurd. He is nearing bust territory. I'd value Broberg at a late 2nd or 3rd pick. He has size and speed but seems to lack the NHL caliber decision making that is required to succeed.

Broberg is indisputably a NHLer, the only question is whether he’s a career third pairing guy or something more. Who do you think will be available to us with the Oilers 1st which is likely to fall in the 16th-32nd overall range? A prospect who will be lucky to be in the aforementioned position in 4 years.

Broberg may have slightly lower upside than whoever we could draft with the Oilers 2024 1st (although he still has very high upside as 6’4 215 dmen who skate like him don’t grow on trees) but his floor is significantly higher.

He is not a third pairing guy right now on a team that struggles on defense. I simply think that if the Sharks offered the oilers a second round pick right now to the oilers for Broberg the oilers would accept. Broberg's value has dropped since he was drafted in 2019, he has not established himself as an NHL player and will be waiver eligible in one year. Like a future draft pick he is not a proven NHL player but he has far less track to take off than a draft pick.

I would much rather have that 1st. I don't trust Edmonton to be a good team from year to year. Even if it gets pushed back a year it could be a decently high pick. Broberg I wouldn't throw more than a late round pick at. He is much closer to bust territory than top 4 defenseman.

Broberg represents the better value in a certain sense, but fans are always going to be drawn to the lottery-esque quality that draft picks have. Plus, one could argue that the Sharks need to be going for draft picks because their most important need is high-end impact players.

The odds of drafting a high-end impact player with a pick in the second half of the first round are effectively zero.

Dreger reporting the Oilers might try to shed Campbell’s contract using Broberg.

What would you need them to add to make a Campbell+Broberg for Kahkonen+Rutta trade work? I don’t think we’re getting their 1st on top of Broberg.
A first+3rd. Broberg isn’t very good at all and doesn’t really have value.

A 22 year old 6’4 215 defenseman with elite skating ability drafted 8th overall who already has 200+ games of high level pro experience “doesn’t really have value”? I would love to hear the logic behind that statement.

They've been trying to use Broberg for a while now and it's not going to be enough on its own because Broberg just doesn't have that sort of trade value. Broberg doesn't move the needle at all in terms of value with a dump like Campbell. It's two 1st round picks with Campbell even with us sending back Kahkonen and Rutta or they have to take back or retain more money.

In their current position the Oilers are not likely to trade a single 1st let alone multiple just to dump Campbell. They will buy him out before doing that.

So we can either tell them good luck with the buyout or we can stack up enough non-1st assets to make it worth our while to absorb Campbell. We have so much cap space starting next season that the Campbell contract barely makes a dent. He can play for Wichita for all I care.

79 NHL games over three seasons with 11 points on a team that would love to maximize any sort of ELC that they currently have again in the minors. They don't keep Kulak and go out and get Ekholm in part without a lack of belief that Broberg was going to get the job done. Addison had more experience, more production, and in a more valued position and didn't return anything near the ability to dump a major contract like Campbell's.

And so they will because they're not going to get rid of Campbell w/o trading a 1st at a minimum. There is no stack worth absorbing Campbell's contract for them w/o 1st round picks. Edmonton just doesn't have those sorts of assets.

I like Calen Addison, especially at the price we paid for him, but he is a dime a dozen player. Defensemen with Broberg’s combination of size and skating are rare and coveted for a reason.

Edmonton has been a contender pretty much since they drafted Broberg. That’s not an ideal situation for patiently developing a project defenseman. SJ on the other hand is a perfect landing spot for him.

I really don’t see what the difference is between Broberg and Mukhamadullin apart from Broberg being 6 months older and a better skater.

Yeah they would be if the talent to be an NHL'er is actually there. It's not with Broberg. Mukhamadullin doesn't actually have trade value until he proves himself either. It's one thing to be a part of a rental trade. It's quite another to be the main piece of a cap dump deal of this magnitude. Mukhamadullin wouldn't be enough to dump Vlasic's contract.

Vlasic’s contract is much worse than Campbell’s. Vlasic is 5 years older, his cap hit is 2M higher, the contract is buyout proof thanks to signing bonuses in the final 2 years and he has no chance of bouncing back to even a fraction of his contract value. Campbell plays a volatile position where players can and do go from AHL quality one year to Vezina caliber the next and he is not owed any more signing bonuses which makes for a clean buyout.

The point I was trying to make by comparing Broberg to Mukhamadullin is, wouldn’t we all love to have another Mukhamadullin in the org? I know I would. At worst you double your odds that a huge smooth skating defenseman pans out as a long term piece of the rebuild. At best you have twin towers on the blueline for the next 10 years.

Broberg alone isn’t enough to absorb Campbell which is why I liked the Petrov suggestion and would also want Edmonton’s 2nd this year in addition to all that.

I think it's more definitive that Broberg isn't going to pan out at this stage than it is for Mukhamadullin. Lots of people like Broberg don't make it work in the NHL so there's no sense in ignoring what's already out there for him just because you fall in love with his size and skating.

Broberg and a 2nd to take Campbell is still a 1st round pick short of being where the value for doing such a thing actually is. There's no sense in taking less than market value when what you're actually getting is a likely bust and a 2nd round pick with limited odds of success as well. All that to eat 9 mil when you buyout Campbell is a waste of money.

Again, he is 6 months older than Mukhamadullin. If we’re already writing off Broberg we should be getting ready to write off Shak too. I think that would be very unwise in both cases.

We’re not talking about kids who tore up some fake league like the QMJHL then struggled as soon as they got to the AHL. Broberg and Shak have played hundreds of games and had success at the highest levels of pro hockey in the world. It takes longer for these kinds of guys to reach their full potential but both have shown enough so far in their young careers to warrant long auditions on a rebuilding team like the Sharks.

“Market value” is whatever the market will bear. If Edmonton isn’t willing to trade future 1sts to dump Campbell then that isn’t his market value. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to respond “f*** it then, we’re not taking him” but I also don’t see the point in letting cap space go unused if we can leverage it to get a free look at Broberg and acquire other assets.

Henry Thrun is a bust who should not be given a qualifying offer this summer, but Philip Broberg is enough to take away the negative trade value that Campbell has. Ok then.
Broberg is bigger and a significantly better skater than Thrun and has a far longer track record of pro success despite being slightly younger. There’s a reason one was drafted 8th overall and the other 100th in the same draft. They are not comparable assets at all. Also nobody said Broberg alone is enough to counteract Campbell’s negative value.

I mean you were tooting the horn hard for Lundkvist a while back and he’s been in and out of the lineup for a weak Dallas d-core.

There's a big difference there though. I don't have to eat Campbell's contract in order to see what Mukhamadullin has. Broberg also hasn't shown enough to me to warrant supplanting any of the kids we do have in the same position for him. I'd rather continue giving opportunities to Okhotiuk, Thrun, and eventually Mukhamadullin over adding someone like Broberg who doesn't do anything with his NHL opportunities.

The market value is also what contract dumps have returned before. If Edmonton isn't willing to pay market value to dump contracts then they're on their own. The 1st round pick for approximately 6 mil cap hit is a pretty well established market. We're not getting a free look at Broberg if we're paying 9 mil to eat Campbell's contract to do it. It's monumentally poor value that you just brush off. There are countless other ways to use that space and it's also not the end of the world if cap space doesn't get used especially on someone who probably isn't going to have a long NHL career.

Broberg is a much better prospect than Lundkvist and a far rarer and more valuable player type. Also IIRC I was shouted down for wanting to trade Bordeleau for Lundkvist which would have been a great trade for us.
