What!?!

I'm not ready to bet that much capital on one flighty winger with questionable history and an elite shot... This is like undoing the Meier trade but with a better shot but less big body power forward play.
The key difference is that Laine is only signed through 2026 so if we're still in a hopeless situation at that point we can trade him and recoup most of what we paid.

I don't think it's really that much value. Pittsburgh is playing much better recently and could easily make the playoffs or even the conference finals. Bystedt appears to have regressed. Ferraro is redundant with Okhotiuk, Shak, Knyzhov, Thrun, etc. on the left side.

Eklund-Hertl-Laine
Musty-Celebrini-Smith

Could be a sick top six. After that we would just need to fix the defense.

I could see Laine having a 40-50 goal season, if used right.
I don't really know why Columbus started this project of making him into a more two-way player... He is a sniper at it's literal meaning. He was scoring over 30 goals as an 18 year old in NHL.
Of course you want every player to be defensively responsible, but Laine is never going to be two-way... It's only one way and it's into the net.

Would love for Sharks to get him, but it has to be for a reasonable price.

With his cap hit, current standing with the coaching staff, and having asked out of one city already, I would be very apprehensive. The only way I would be willing to take on Laine is if Columbus simply wants to be rid of him, and offers him up at a severely reduced price. I understand that they're asking him to play more responsibly, and have been trying him at center, but being benched despite that is a red flag in my mind.

If it was for peanuts, sure, but I certainly don’t want to trade Bystedt, who still has a lot of potential (remember, Eklund regressed in the SHL too, it’s a hard league), for a one dimensional winger. If we were closer in the rebuild, maybe, but meh.
Great point; Eklund regressed in the SHL and is turning out nicely. Of course, he's not the only one but a homegrown reminder serves best!

PIT 1st, NJ 2nd, Bystedt and Ferraro for Laine?
That's more than I'd pay even though Ferraro is basically a cap dump.

That's probably what he's going to get on the market but he doesn't do anything for this team. I'd rather keep the two dice roles right now

No thanks to Laine, he is a loser, and we already are losing enough games as is.

Do not want his personality possibly infecting our young players during a period where its going to take a lot of mental fortitude as is to keep from playing with a loser attitude.

Dude has all the tools of a superstar, but his mentality simply isn't oriented to pushing those skills to their limit, or being the leader of a young team.

No offense to SJ but Laine would be awful on the Sharks. He would be a main guy on the Sharks and he isn't good at that. He needs to be on a team where he isn't the main man.

Hes not a leader, he's a passenger and complimentary type player on a team that have a few sure fire studs

He is a very lazy player that I would refuse to have my youth around him if I were a GM

He seems to be one of the most anti Grier type of player. No two way game, no compete, and just lacking in the detail department. While we all know that this team needs more scoring, a lot of that is going to come by way of adding D-Men that can move the puck rather than a gimmicky goal scorer only type of player that brings less than nothing to the table otherwise.

Has about a 0% chance of happening and some nobody THW Sharks writer would not be the source of any sort of inside scoop on said transaction.

Suggest Blackwood as possibility. Could include Campbell in deal, with "draft currency".

I would do 2024 top 10 protected Oilers 1st, 2025 Oilers 3rd and Campbell for Kahkonen. If they want Blackwood signed at a nice number for two years they'll have to add at least another 2nd.

No on Laine. There's a reason he keeps being traded.

Capfriendly says he's been traded once from Jets to CBJ. The eye popper, at least for me, is the 26% retention on that trade.

I'd much prefer Macklin over Laine. Sharks should stay the course.

We have next to no draft capital?
I mean, this isn't ideal for the worst team in the league:

Look at Arizona by comparison:

It's just the reality of Grier inheriting a roster with zero valuable trade assets outside of Timo.

Big IF but having 3 first round picks is a lot more valuable than future 2nds from playoff teams. But I totally get the point, it would be nice to have a lot more quantity.
