I guess my issue with Hanafin is the 7 year term. If we sign guys in free agency who are not 1st liners than we shouldn't give them over 4 years. I just don't want to exit one cap hell only to enter another.
The problem is players have to agree to contracts too. Obviously a team would always love to keep a contract to 4 years and not pay for the years of decline. The problem is players want to long term deals.

DW was good about not going over 5 years until it became clear that he would lose players or never sign an impact FA if he didn’t go beyond 5 years.

Exactly my issue, throw big money at short term if you want but lets not repeat what got us here in the first place.
Huge difference between signing Couture and Vlasic to 8-year contracts that kick in when they're 30 and 31 vs. signing Hanifin to a 7-year contract that kicks in when he's 27.

It doesn't need to be Hanifin (and as @Pinkfloyd correctly pointed out he will have better options in free agency which might be why Grier was trying to jump the queue) but at some point we will need to bring in legit top four defensemen from outside the organization. There's nothing in the pipeline besides Shak and even he's probably a #4 at best.

For me, what to do in the offseason depends on where the kids are at. I would need to know what Smith's status is. I would need to know how guys like Gushchin, Muk, and Thrun as well as Addison, Emberson, and Okhotiuk are as the NHL'ers on defense needing a new contract as RFA's. I would also need to know where they see Bystedt next season. Is he a 3C rookie or is he in the minors. Either is okay but it just switches up what to go after. Looking at the contract situation of the team, I think it's more likely that they go out and sign a winger with experience. I think the team is still too awful to worry about making big splashes yet. Maybe in 2025 when we have some expiring contracts on the blue line and the Burns retention slot opens up we can take our shots then. More kids likely have more experience and fill out the lineup a little better. If we're worried about reaching the floor next year, we have a lot of expiring forwards and a goalie spot to spend on. Fill them with short term expensive deals and we'll be fine.

Ideally, I'd like next year to start off with lines like this...

Eklund-Hertl-Zetterlund
Gushchin-Couture-Smith
(vet winger)-Bystedt-Granlund
Smith-Sturm-(whoever)

Vlasic-Benning
Mukhamadullin-Rutta
Thrun-Addison

Blackwood-(whoever)

If Smith, Bystedt, and Muk are coming we might as well invite Celebrini / Eiserman too

If they feel like they're ready to step in on day one, yeah I would include that in the plans as well. I really don't mind bringing in all the kids we feel like are NHL quality and then surrounding them with vets to plug the holes. My guess though is that if they get a Celebrini to step in, they'd probably just trade Gushchin to a team willing to give him a shot.

I don't think Bystedt is ready unfortunately, but still love to see what he's got on the 3rd/4th line

On Bystedt, I think it depends how he finishes the season. If he gets back to the top line, he should at least be in North America.

I agree about age being relative to contract length, but I not sure Hanifin is what the Sharks need. I don't think he great at defending.

Arizona badly needs help on the PK. My belief is their depth blueliners are letting them down. Not only 5v5 but especially on the PK. The Yotes aren’t likely to burn assets on older players. But they did trade a 2nd for Durzi. So I think that age range is on the table. I’ve been looking around at teams that need picks and have a young-ish blueliner who could theoretically help the depth on D and especially help the PK. Mario Ferraro has a reputation as a solid PKer. Interested in the fan perspective.

Is Ferraro actually decent on the PK? Do you expect him to be traded? If so, what would you expect the acquisition cost to be for him?

Thanks guys!

Hes good at blocking shots. Ideally a decent draft pick should be enough for a trade

Arizona has 10 2nds and 8 3rds in the next three drafts.
Fork over a conditional 2nd that gives us the best pick of the 2nds that you have and I'd be fine moving Ferraro to Arizona. Ferraro can be a good part to an effective PK. I don't think he'll cure PK woes your team may have but he's proven himself effective in that role in San Jose even in the bad years. If you're okay with a guy who kills PK's well enough and blocks shots and that's pretty much it then Ferraro will be a solid add for you. I'd prefer to trade him sooner rather than later too. Moving him makes sense for us as well since it's probably a good idea for the Sharks to bring up Muk or Thrun to have someone on the left side that knows how to move the puck well also.

It's all rational re: Ferraro, but I'll be shocked if he's moved. The word last spring was that people were calling about him and yet Grier's "price for Ferraro is very high"... This was reported on SJHN on March 8 2023, granted Friedman was the source.

So, it seems like Ferraro is in the plans.
