The more I think about it this a terrible trade for a team like the Rangers with alleged playoff aspirations. Their second pairing is now Lindgren-Schneider which might be worse than Ferraro-Liljegren.

Shesterkin already needed to stand on his head every night to give that team a chance and they ship out one of their 3 defenders who can reliably log 20+ minutes a night for nothing in return?

I understand they needed to clear cap space but it's December 6th. What are they spending that money on?
I think the Rangers are underperforming and they want to change their leadership group/culture.

Guess smith is injured

So people don't panic at the vagueness:

"“He’s got an upper-body injury, probably day-to-day,” Warsofsky said. “Game-time. We’ll see how tomorrow shakes out.”

When did Smith get hurt?

“I don’t even know,” the San Jose Sharks bench boss said.

For what it’s worth, San Jose Hockey Now saw Smith around the Sharks’ room, not looking particularly injured, so day-to-day checks out, at least visually. Of course, that’s just a surface read.

He also finished Thursday night’s 8-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning."

They needed to move him before next year. As long as he stayed healthy, not sure it was never going to be a major issue. They now have $27M in deadline cap space, so they could go on a major spending spree. That hardly correlates with postseason success, but it does correlate with Rangers history.

With Shesterkin, Miller, Kaako, Lafreniere, and Cuylle all requiring major raises (followed by Schneider and Panarin next year), you've got to think this would have been the Rangers best shot.

Yeah they need to use this cap space to do something really big (Lafreniere for JT Miller?) but even if they succeed I have zero confidence in a blueline consisting of smurf Fox, wildly inconsistent KAM, perpetually injured Lindgren and 0 other proven NHL defenders.

Parros will never suspend Trouba now for a dirty hit on the Sharks 😭
On December 6th, an incident occurred between The Anaheim Ducks and The New York Rangers. Defenseman Jacob Trouba was traded to the Anaheim for Urho Vaakanainen and a 2025 4th round pick.

Following this incident, the department of player safety has suspended Forward Raffi Torres for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.

The more I think about it, I think this was missed opportunity. Probably that feeling goes away soon. Physical top 4 RD is perfect since we are building a LD oriented offensive/puck moving core. I don't know, just having that type of a defencemen that can produce is rare.

Maybe it's just frustrating cause Ducks got him... I'm going to hate watching the games against them. Being scared every time Trouba/Gudas are on the ice that they could end one of our star players career.

Also it's almost 2025 - can we drop 2023 from the thread title?

They still have more space to work with for this season though, no? As long as they use him as a pure rental and don't plan on re-signing him, that is.

$92M and $11.5M/year holy shit.

Price- $10.5
Bob- $10
Vasi- $9.5
Helleybuck- $8.5

He’s great in the playoffs, but it’s not like he gets the cup tax Vasi earned. He’s good enough to steal 2/4 series, but they’re going to struggle to have the skaters win the other two.

Elite PMD, great wingers, a $11.5M goalie, and meh centers. Not the way I’d build my cup contender.

They may prioritize him over Miller annd Kaako, but Cuylle would be a good 2nd round pick tier offer sheet target. He’d be a real nice complimentary power forward for Smith and Granny. Can’t see the Rangers in a position to spend $4-5M on a 22 year old middle six forward.

Eklund-Celebrini-Zetts/Tofolli
Cuylle-Granny-Smith
Koistin/Prospect-Wenny-Zetts/Tofolli
Goody-Delly-Kunin/Cards
Gundstrom
