Seems like a reasonable guess, with the only question being: does this team think they need Givani Smith more, or Gushchin more? I don't think they cut Kostin despite the inconsistency, but G. Smith may be seen as necessary sandpaper, or just another 4th line plug where Goose might have something on the second line.

If they want to move Gush for assets, I'd keep him in the lineup and see if he can score some points. But we'll see.

Edit: here's Sheng's take. FWIW I think because of waivers they are more likely to have Gush be the first call up with injuries, rather than cut G.Smith.

Matthew Robertson on waivers. Probably worth a claim to be our #7 over Thompson. Nobody else looks remotely interesting.

I don’t know if Gushchin has an NHL future, but hard to imagine a better performance for a guy trying to make the team.
You still have to give him the opportunity and reward him for his hard work this preseason. All the talk going into camp was open competition you gotta earn your spot. Guschin has obviously earned it, even the Ducks/Vegas/Sharks broadcast were praising him and already claiming he has earned his spot. This just sends a bad message in my opinion. It's just preseason but the vibes were so high after that win last night and this just kills all of the good vibes from yesterday

Unless Granlund or Celebrini are not good to go.
This could be the case considering Granlund has not played in the last couple pre season games

I’m not a big fan of Givani but I get it. If someone takes liberties with Macklin or Will, I want Givani here, to take care of that and hopefully curb it.
This isn’t about who the better player is. That’s hockey.

Kunin and Goodrow do the same job. I don't like either but bot can do that and actually play hockey to an extent. Smith just face punches

Did you see who didn’t play for Vegas last night? Korczak. I don’t know the reasons why but one could be that they didn’t want him being targeted. In hockey terms. Just something that popped into my head when I saw he was scratched.

To add, Kunin and Goodrow, though willing, are not heavyweights.

I think it could be Granlund on IR. Then you make the decision of Gushchin down or Smith waived when he comes back.

Or I’m gonna riot
This makes the most sense. But even if Gushchin doesn't start in the show, I am betting he gets 30+ games with injuries. He's gonna get his shot this year, I have to believe.

Unfortunately for Bords ... Not sure how much room that gives him.

I don't believe having a tough guy who makes your team worse on the ice has ever prevented someone from "taking liberties with" your top players, on any team. Celebrini and Smith will get hit, sometimes hard and nastily, even if the entire test of the team is composed of fighters.

I'd rather have the hockey player than the pugilist.

Obviously, I’ve stepped on toes here.
I’m not saying Givani needs to be here, just that I get it. This game is what it is. Many value the possibility of a guy who will fight. I didn’t make the rule.

Most fans of the Sharks first season will say their favorite player was Link. He didn’t deserve to be in the league but that doesn’t change what many think.

There are literally players such as Arber up in Montreal. Concusding stars such as Stutzle. I don’t think Goose is going to stick up for Mack if it happens to him.
Macks line needs to stick up for Mack. GSmith hitting some 4th liner isn't going to do shit. It's team toughness, not some random who can't play at the NHL level

Beyond the merits of having goons on your team (I don't think Smith even really fits that definition of the term; he's simply a sub-4th line player who's willing to fight, but not some heavyweight), I think you have to also consider the other side of it: a young player with upside who's paid his dues in the minors and has shown growth and seems clearly ready for at least a more extended chance in the NHL.

If you're not going to give him a chance, then what kind of message does that send to all the other not-superstar prospects in the system?

That’s beyond my purview. I can rant and rave to what cause? Grier and Wars aren’t calling me for my opinion.
I’ve not said that Danil doesn’t deserve a shot up here. I’ve watched this game long enough to know and to say that waivers and such are more important than what you or I have to say about it.
Would I be surprised to see Goose sent down in favor of Givani? Not at all. I’d think it’s a wrong choice but I’m not going to spout about rioting over it.
