The window opens when the team decides to start competing. Not getting a cornerstone Goaltender or Franchise 1C just because they are available a year early is just dumb. If either of those players are available you say yes.

Exactly, the window opens when we start to compete. Right now thats not an option. We have roughly 4m in cap space ATM. 1 player isnt enough to take us from this dumpster fire to competing. Hell id argue even McDavid couldnt do that.

Youre just burning assets for the sake of having a franchise center, which sure is nice, but not practical.

You burn those assets once guys like Smith, Bystedt, Musty etc are solidifide NHLers, but the team lacks a key piece (cough 1D cough) to take that next step.

Look at teams like NJ, they waited til Hughes established himself along with Hischier, then went out and added Dougie, Meier etc. Thats the blueprint we should follow

Bingo, you draft and wait for your core to develop and then you start adding pieces. The same blueprint that TB, Pitt, and Colorado used to win their cups. This takes time and we can’t rush through the bad years in exchange for a short term fix that will do more harm than good long term.

If we somehow could get Petterson of course you get him. He speeds up the rebuild — and next year there’s a bit more hope for more help. Guschin likely makes the team, so does Muhk and Thrun. Bystedt might start in the AHL but hopefully he can find a way up to the big club and Eklund will have an extra year.

You then go out and try and make more trades/signings for players that matter and not the carcasses of old guys that are barely in the league. They won’t be a playoff team but they could start looking better. Ideally we get Celebrini this year and then he, Smith and Musty can come in together the year after next and then we’re talking.

The main issue is still D and other than picking BPA with our 1st, I feel like every other pick has to be a swing at a defenseman.
I don't think Pettersson speeds up the rebuild. We're at that stage where adding someone like Pettersson will put us back into that level of mediocrity that severely hinders your chances at drafting a gamebreaking talent. The team needs to stick to tanking until Vlasic's contract expires and then evaluate where the team's at. It's quite possible that this team doesn't draft well and pushing the team in a competitive direction without a young core to build around is how you end up like Edmonton before they really tanked for McDavid.

If Petterson is available you go get him. Just like with Thornton a trade for a #1 center can transform a team. Petterson is 24 and would give us an elite #1 center for the next ten years. I doubt he becomes available but he is what we hope Will Smith becomes.

Yes and no. You also have to take advantage of these guys while they’re on their entry level deals. If they pan out then there goes all of your cap space in a very short amount of time.

Is the thought that Celebrini might be ready for the NHL right off the bat?
Maybe, but the team will have a lot of guys still on their ELCs and the hope is by next year guys like Eklund will be ready to elevate his game. Eventually they’ll have to start putting together a real nhl squad as opposed to bargain bin shopping year after year.

Even if people like Swayman or Peterssen are available, are we really going to be able to come up with the most enticing package? I would imagine multiple teams would jump at the chance to get players like that. I find it hard to believe that a team like NJ who seem like a solid G away from being real contenders would allow us to outbid them for Swayman with all the riches they have. Peterssen, I would think would have even more suitors. What's the best that we could realistically offer for these guys that would tempt their current teams?
Kunin, Labanc and Vlasic... LOL

Sorry but if Thrun was such a gem, he'd be playing in the NHL.

Sharks are doing what they do best - hyping up prospects.
Thrun is a casualty of being waiver exempt on a team with a bunch of non-waiver exempt defensemen under contract - most of whom he has already demonstrated he is better than.

Edit: the Sharks currently have the following 9 d-men under contract That are not waiver-exempt (Benning, Burroughs, Emberson, Ferraro, Knyzhov, MacDonald, Okhotiuk, Ruuta and Vlasic).

This happens to a lot of players. It’s the nature of the beast. I feel for him. This isn’t about ability.

I wonder if Thrun signed with the Sharks thinking that he'd be in the NHL and playing in the NHL on a regular basis and refused to sign with Anaheim due to their Defensive depth (I have no idea, just thinking) and not getting that opportunity to play directly in the NHL...

Love the love for Thrun here!

You cannot deny the potential he showed us in his stint last season, in preseason, and the beginning of this season (Quinn even had him on PP1 and he made it look decent). He did make a couple of defensive mistakes this season that led to goals, mostly from over-aggressiveness and trying to do too much but he's growing.

He probably did, but now he's stuck. He can't exactly play hardball with the Sharks if he can't even beat out the likes of Jan Rutta and the corpse of Marc-Edouard Vlasic, waiver status or not (if he really was that good, the Sharks would have found a way), so he's stuck with RFA status and at best can threaten to go play in Switzerland or something.

I agree on Thrun signing with the Sharks because he could get NHL playing time. Where I do not agree is that he is in the AHL because he didn't outplay a number of guys who are on the team. It just comes down to asset management. Grier has obviously loaded up on players that will have some value at the TDL to garner additional picks for the 2024 draft. I would bet the team roster looks markedly different on March 9th than it does today, and that - space permitting - Thrun and Muk will be brought up to the big club as permanent fixtures.

Going after Pettersson now will be similar to what happened when we re-signed Karlsson with no real plan on how to build around him effectively. I just don't think we have the resources needed to do that for Pettersson especially with our blue line in shambles for the next three years.

Seriously, the Sharks are 4/5 years away from making a trade like that work

Petterson has run out of patience with the Canucks, why would he stick around for our rebuild? Lol
Exactly. And anyway, all might be moot if they keep playing well this year and he re-signs. Just like how there was a 1 week period in there where people were talking about signing Matthews. Nope.

One final point regarding Swayman.. anybody who still has the desire to trade premium assets for a goalie after Jones and Hill is out of their mind. Not saying the latter two are on Swayman’s level but goalies are extremely volatile. The assets + the ensuing contract would be a bad gamble especially right now

We were already a playoff team by the time we acquired Thornton as opposed to being a historically inept team as we are right now. It wouldn't be the same. That was a trade to turn a solid team into a Cup contender. Acquiring Peterssen now would turn us from being a team that challenges for #1 overall to one that is in the 7-10 OA range and nowhere close to contending for a playoff. Yeah, the hope and dream would be to get him and magically expect 4 out of our Top 5 prospects to become NHL regulars. That simply does not happen. We will be lucky if 2 out of our current top 5 prospects end up being solid players.

Besides, the tiny amount of halfway decent assets we have would all be needed, plus picks to acquire people like that. So, where would that leave us really? We have no choice but to embrace the darkness for 3-5 years at least. And hope guys like Smith, Eklund, Mukh, Musty, Bystedt etc show that they belong. Odds are that 3 out of those guys will flame out, so we need to keep accumulating assets. We need many groups of 5, that will eventually lead to maybe 10-12 solid players that we can then start complimenting with free agents and trades.

And of course, that is no guarantee either. People like to believe that their teams are always in an upward trajectory and draft picks and cap space will surely improve them. But, we could always end up being another Coyotes or Sabres or Senators who keep bragging about farm systems, but never amount to much in terms of actual success. That is my biggest fear. We all hope to be NJ. I'm worried we will be Arizona 2.0

Acquiring Pettersson alone won't turn this awful team into anything more than a very bad team. The plan would be to continue adding pieces from there. We have a lot of cap space opening up over the next 2-3 years. Once you have a superstar 1C in place it's not that difficult to fill in the rest of your lineup through trades and free agency.

We're not required to build around the players we draft. They're ultimately just assets that we can either develop ourselves or cash in for established impact NHLers.

Supposedly, he wants out of Vancouver because he's tired of not playing for a cup. Or at least a real shot at one. Even if the Nick's decide to trade him to a divisional rival. He's not going to want to stick around to wait for our youngsters and future projects to develop. And I highly doubt we will become any sort of FA Mecca all of a sudden just because we managed to trade for a 1C.

Please list all of the cup winners who built their cup winning teams through acquiring established superstar talent vs drafting and developing their core superstars. I’ll save you the trouble. It doesn’t happen. The knights are an exception due to the expansion draft but that’s a bs metric.

yea we aren't the Rangers where top FAs and college kids only want to play there.

Like, i think there's a higher chance a college player refuses to sign with us than a FA only wants to come here
