I get it. He's not good, but still a bit of a lotto ticket? 2nd round pick and D-men take longer... If someone picks him up on waivers then so be it. But still an asset to the org overall even if not a significant asset.I just don’t think Okhotiuk is good. I guess I wouldn’t hate signing him with the idea that it’s possible he could go on waivers some time during the year, and big young defensemen do tend to have value even if they’re not very good (see Megna).
We can still tank while having one legit top-4 defenseman on the roster. I know, it’s tough to believe, but we’d still be bottom-2 in the league if Dylan DeMelo was our best defenseman instead of Jan Rutta.
Not to push, but any idea about this bit?
What do the Sharks do about their not so great track record in developing the most out of their young D prospects in general?
The elephant in the room ^^
Player dev in general needs to be upgraded to try to maximize the value of the draft selections at the very least, I would think. I feel like the Sharks have perennially been bad at Dmen dev in particular. Sharks need to get the most out of their pipeline, especially right now. Who should replace McCarthy and CO?
Demelo is a bit of an example... I just don't think he was highly thought of by the Sharks at the time he was shipped to Ottawa and Ottawa put him to work increasing his TOI. Getting more out of him. Pick 179, not like he's some world beater out of the gate, but he turned into a decent 4-6 kinda Dman with his post-Sharks team. I guess Demelo was a bit of a late bloomer, but shouldn't that be expected of 6th Round pick guys? They'll take a minute to round out into something, like @The Nemesis's rocks? Gotta keep grinding them down and polishing them into something shiny with value. How do the Sharks do this?
If the Sharks are going to tank and rebuild, I feel like there needs to be a concerted effort within the org to make their whole developmental program more efficient and just plain useful. But how's the FO upgrade that?
