Still very quiet on the trade front across the league, I know that people are waiting for 'the domino' to fall, but maybe this trade deadline is just going to be a quiet one league wide. The talent saturation across the league is real, and the fact that a lot of the top teams, have been top teams for 5+ years, means that they do not have many resources left to aquire players this year. Just a thought.

The last few years, as I recall, most of the big trades were happening days before the deadline.

TL;DR "I don't like the guy, a late pick"

Not that I blame them, but this team surely is in shambles.
I tried to temper expectations last offseason lol. MG got so caught up in trying to flip for mediocre picks he forgot to even add any good players . Seems to have googled capfriendly's trade history and looked for the players available who have been traded the most thinking that was a good way to do it. I hope he does some actual research this offseason and tries to build a team (both temporary and future players)with quality instead of the quantity he's been going for.

If he is smart though he'll realize next season they will be just as bad, and he should be looking to actually take offers on guys like Granlund/Rutta and even guys with more term in the event that all value completely drops off like Barabanov. He could've legitimately gotten at least a 3rd last year. He's a better player than Namestinkov, who I bet is also on Grier's list to (re)aqcuire.

I think it’s more down to the fact that there’s like 3 trajectory changing players out there. It’s Guentzel, Hanifin, and that might be it actually. A Duclair or Tarasenko isn’t really going to make that much of a difference in the playoffs.

Anthony Mantha goes from Washington to Vegas for a second-round pick and a fourth-round pick.

The Caps retained 50 percent on Mantha's salary/cap hit. Which is significant. Means Vegas can still do more and perhaps add another forward with Stone on LTIR

Mantha had 20 Goals and 14 assists. We'll be lucky to get a 2nd for Duclair then :-(

If it's anything less than a 2nd for Duclair I would probably just keep and try to re-sign him.

Meh. I think Duclair has more intangibles going for him. Cheaper, younger, more playoff experience. The numbers aren't that far off, but Duke does play tougher minutes while Mantha is mainly an expensive fourth liner.

They're similar offensively but Mantha is much better defensively. On the other hand apparently a lot of teams don't like Mantha's compete, which was rumored to be the reason Yzerman cut ties in the first place, while I think Duclair has mostly shed those concerns. If I'm Grier I'm definitely demanding this exact return from any team interested in Duke.

I know people like to say this with every pending free agent, but in this case trading Duclair but then trying to bring him back would actually potentially make sense for both parties (unless, of course, he gets similar/better offers from better teams and he's ready to not lose so much again).

I don't think Rutta or Benning are better than the garbage we have on expiring deals this year. Rutta's a #7 and Benning is a weak #7 (and maybe worse after his injury).

Sturm's also just depth - ideally he's a #12-13 guy on a playoff team, wins faceoffs and PKs but doesn't do a whole lot else. That has some value but not a lot.

I don't think the Sturm signing is a bad one (I do think Benning is, he's awful), but they're not important moves.
Sturm is better than a 12-13 guy on a playoff team, not much, but definitely an above average 4th liner. If his deal was expiring i'd expect a lot of teams to line up for him.

And i still don't get the hate on Benning. He is an NHL-caliber player (even if it's low-end), on a really cheap deal that can be stashed in the minors, and doesn't* block anyone from coming up and getting ice time. Having that kind of asset as your 6/7 is excellent IMO

Fans/internet commenters are really devaluing Barabonov because his Jfresh card is garbage (let's avoid devolving into debating the merits of these cards), but I think whoever gets him will be pretty pleased. He's kinda in that weird ground where last year he played better than his true value, and this year worse, but i think with a contender and good teammates he can get back to being an effective middle 6 F

My sense is that Grier really hasn’t put his stamp on the roster yet. He’s been busy getting rid of costly contracts and taking on reclamation projects with the hope he can squeeze out a few more draft picks. I’d venture that some of the players that have been picked up thus far aren’t exactly who he’d want on the team long term, but fine for a transition team to build up value.

I think we will really start seeing Grier’s template over the next few years when he has ample cap space and trade capital available to him. We will see a very different roster construction at that time that is larger, heavier, faster, skilled and competitive. I’m excited to see that team iced and understand it will be a while before it happens. Till then, I’m not attached to many of the players that are coming and going. I also am fine with a subpar product on the ice if it can get us to the promised land faster with higher quality draft picks. It’s like in the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov where the goal is to reduce the 1,000 year war down to a mere 100 years. Anything we can do to shorten the rebuild is fine in my book.
