Just like Patrick is better than Tavares?
JT is a bad defensive player, if Patrick had turned out to be the player he should have been, he might well have been better - was never going to score like JT, but I would never trade peak Couts for JT even though JT outscored him on a regular basis.

I suspect those advanced metric models undervalue defense, the way baseball models used to undervalue defense until they got better stats on runs saved - but you just watch someone like Rojas and you see the difference defense makes - same way in hockey - top defensive players not just stop goals, but turn over possession and flip the ice.

Even in his prime years, JT sucked on defense:

An intriguing decision that's still pending: The Phantoms have to determine whether to keep 19-year-old Alexis Gendron or send him back to the QMJH's Gatineau Olympiques for his draft-plus-two season. Although Gendron was not NHL Entry Draft-eligible in 2021 due to being born too late (Dec. 30, 2002) for the Sept. 15, 2022 birthdate cutoff, he IS age-eligible for the American Hockey League during the 2023-24 season. That's because he'll turn 20 before the end of the 2023 calendar year.

Gendron scored a goal in Sunday's game against Hershey. He had some good moments during Rookie Camp and the Rookie Series against the New York Rangers' prospects but not to the extent of being a consistent standout who jumped out as being immediately ready for pro hockey. On the flip side, after scoring 34 goals in 34 regular season games and and additional 14 tallies in 13 playoff games last season following a trade to Gatineau from the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, the QMJHL may not be a suitable challenge at the player's current level of development (at least from a goal-scoring standpoint).

Makes more sense to keep him in the AHL, even on a part-time basis.

In the Q, his HC will want him to focus on goal scoring, b/c that will help the team win and him keep his job - but Gendron doesn't need a lot of work in that area - what he'll need is a good strength and conditioning program, and a focus on other aspects of his game. He's not going to score 60 goals in the AHL (much less the NHL) so he'll have to polish other aspects of his game.

Since he's 19, spending 3 years in the AHL would mean he's only 22 when he would make his hypothetical NHL debut - so they can give him a longer run way.

Thought this was interesting...

Václav Pletka was the only one ever with the organisation.

Tbh, in hindsight I think had they been able to get Jukka Seppo and Michael Hjälm over? Both would probably have been solid NHLers.

From 89-95 Seppo was one of the better players in Liiga.
From 82-94 Michael Hjälm was a very good SHL player.

Watching 2.5 games, Barkey looks a bit quicker than last spring. His stride mechanics could be lengthened out still. He's a joy to watch though. I'm mostly trying to pay attention to Dickinson, but he still grabs my attention. His skill and offensive IQ are no joke. Unfortunately, in Flyers Land he's "top 6 or bust."

I see Cowan is back. He and Barkey were a fun duo last playoffs.

Shooters shoot.

3 of 12 in the dot too.

18 and counting! Can he hit 20 without scoring or recording a point?

The NCAA leader in shots coming in was 15 in 3 games.

(It's also Levshunov at D. Imagine the puck movement on that future PP.)

EDIT: It was only 11 shots on 19 attempts. They listed it wrong in the box score. Damn!

I think we can consider Millman a nonprospect now, starting the season at Reading, same with Zmolek.

Glad to see you join me on the Barkey bandwagon

Barkey is painfully small, it remains to be seen if JG or Martel is the path he'll follow.
But worth the gamble.

gendron scratched for the phantoms for some reason, theyre down 2-0 in the first 4 minutes lol classic us
