Considering where things are going, it'll be below market within 3 seasons from today for the level of player he is.
The level of player he is now or the level of player he will be in 3 years?

That contract will age like milk, we should either use him as our own rental for one more cup run or be smart and trade him this summer for a top 6 forward with term.

Left side of defense with G and Byram in the top 4 is perfectly fine.

It's really not. Girard has shown us time and time again he's not capable of playoff hockey. The Avs need to allocate his 5M per elsewhere on the roster.

Now... Toews will be an interesting case with aging. Certainly at 34-35-36, he's going to fall off... likely earlier. But he's got two things going for him, he doesn't play a physical game so that wear and tear is limited compared to other 30+ guys. Think more Josi/Faulk than Manson/Nemo. He's also a late bloomer in the NHL really not establishing until 25 and having barely over 300 games. There is a train of thought (that has merit, but I don't subscribe) that more than age, games played matters more to the performance curve. Where the peak happens somewhere between 250-400, regression around 450-550, and cliff at 600-700.

Personally, locking in Toews for 30-37 pretty much means you only get 4 years max of appropriate pay. Possible it gets 2 or 3. That's a risk. I'd also say that 4+ years from now doesn't really matter anyway.

I'm 90/10 on the Avs re-signing Toews. Pretty sure it is going to happen and I think it happens this summer.

Something tells me "almost" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Winnipeg had just re-signed Connor for 7 years in Sep 2019 and he just had a 38 goal season, while Bo was either still in junior or just had his first concussion.

Trade doesn't make a lot of sense. Sounds more like tire kicking on both sides.

With how much smoke there was I’d say it was more than tire kicking.

I remember the rumor too from 2020, here it is:

15. The Winnipeg Free Press’s Mike McIntyre had a trade rumour last week involving Kyle Connor and Bowen Byram. (The actual one I heard was Connor for Byram and Vladeslav Kamenev.) There were multiple denials when I looked into it. I do think Kamenev wants more of an opportunity to play.

So Winnipeg a couple years removed from going to the conference finals, and a year or less removed from signing Kyle Connor to a 7 year deal, after which he was their leading point and goal scorer, putting up 38 goals and 73 points in 71 games in 2019-20, decided to rebuild and trade him for an 18/19 year old defenseman who was either still in junior or just had a bad concussion?

Come on guys, that makes no sense at all from Winnipeg’s perspective.

Just because there were rumors of name’s being thrown around, doesn’t mean a deal was close. Names are thrown around all the time.

That rumor was from Mike McIntyre. This is what Elliotte Friedman said about it.

"There were multiple denials when I looked into it."

I mean it was reported by Winnipeg sports media. I‘m not saying it makes sense but it was a big rumor.

I agree it was a rumor. And they probably talked about it.

That's different from it almost happening though. This is how false narratives start around here.

Does that sound like a deal Winnipeg would do a couple years after going to the conference finals, and a few months after signing Connor to a 7 year deal?

Trade their leading point and goal scorer from that season for an 18 year old defenseman still in junior, and a 23 year old Russian forward who finished with 1 goal 8 points in 38 games that year as a rookie?

I'm not even sure that makes sense as a tire kicking offer.

Well I for one am glad we didn't do it.

Imagine not having Kamenev!
That’s “KHL Champ Vlad Kamenev” to you.

Speaking of which… 11 goals in 27 playoff games is nice to see. Bring him back and let him do woof with Nuke on game days.
