Nobody knows what the cap or team will be in the first year of Mikko's next deal. There's plenty of paths for him to return.

Do they trade Girard or the more expensive to resign Toews? Do they sign Bo to a bridge deal and is it 1, 2, or 3 years? Do they add another $4-5M winger on a multi year deal? We don't even know who the next 2C is and how expensive they'll be.

Not to mention the complete unknown at what the cap will be by then, which is expected to take at least one big jump soon.

What I’m really, really curious about and is a topic I think we should dive into feet-first is who should be traded between Byram, Girard and Tazer!!!

Personally, I think JTC should be re-upped for 6x6, Erod 4x4 both with NTC.
Next, see if we can get Jost back…perhaps for Newhook+?
Then I saved the best for last. Byram for Graves.

We needs us a few whipping boys! :sarcasm: :deadhorse

Rants will want more than MacK. Probably 1.5-2m more.

Yep. Mackinnon actually took a pretty decent discount yet again with his contract. Likely in part due to the still flat cap. But in ~3 years time when Matthews, Leon, McDavid, and even Mikko are all on new contracts, Mack is going to look ~$2.5M-3M underpaid yet again.

This also more of why it's pure foolishness to think thos team has a window beyond the next ~2 years. Our cap situation is only going to get uglier and uglier as more guys come off the cheap deals and on deals closer to what they're actually worth.

Mack from $6.3M - $12.6M this summer and Byram with his first jump from $900k to $4.5M Toews from $4.1M - $8M next summer. Mikko from $9.25M to $14M the summer after that AND probably Bo with his second jump from $4M to $9M+

This is only the beginning and it gets even uglier from here.

Adding Mantha doesn’t make the team tougher. It certainly makes us lazier though.
The player they need to target is Comtois. Ducks like usual buried a promising player and killed their offense....getting him out of that dumpster fire and in a real system could have him rebound big time. Plus he actually brings that physical edge and isn't another aging bottom 6er. Sounds like Ducks might not even qualify him, you'd think they'd learn after Steel last year who the Avs should've been all over. Send them Ranta and a meh prospect like Ambrosio instead of fighting with other teams for his service as a FA.

Bud if we could trade Rantanen for Matthews even as a pending UFA I’d fly to Denver from the most easterly point of North America, rent a vehicle and drive The Moose to the airport myself. And dude I’m broke af and shouldn’t be wasting money on trips like that and shit.
Hahaha in was mostly in jest. But Mikko has a better playoff resume and does have years left on his deal unlike Matthews. Just sayin...

Yeah, I’d move Mikko for Matthews. Simply because having that 1-2 punch down the middle with Makar on the backend would make team building so easy moving forward.

That being said Mikko’s way more of a gamer than Matthews. The only thing that holds him back is he’s a winger not a centre.

I'll bang this drum one more time, but Kubalik would be a good pickup. Might even be able to get him retained.

Send them OO for a guy who can step into the top 9 next year and provide a similar role. Will be like having Bura for 1/5 of the salary. He's a flawed player but has shown he can perform in the POs and would thrive in the right environment IMO.

Lindholm would be such a cash money fit. Even if the value was there, though, I just don't see how Calgary trades him to their biggest competition in the West assuming they get their shit together.

Dubas set Matthews up to completely screw over whichever poor bastard takes over that organization. They're going to pay that kid up the ass to not walk on them.
If he walks they still ger his cap space.

Id rather have the space

It still angers me that the Avs didn't try Mikko at 2C more this past season. It would literally solve so many problems with this team if they had just went full commit on that plan.

But ya, as a winger Mikko is a luxury piece. A damn good one, but still a luxury. To get a "2C" of Matthews' caliber would be wild.
