Interestingly, only six players in the draft have played more games currently than Newhook, and none drafted after him. Now some will end up better picks, but it's the situation where players picked earlier would've been better but our pick at 16 is actually good.

Similar to Jost in terms of forwards with his draft. Avs seem to have fallen at the tail end right before the draft fell off both times.

That 19' draft was pretty top heavy. Kind of a poor draft in general. Lots of misses in the top half.

Really the only notable high end players are Hughes, Byram, Seider, Zegras, and maybe Boldy and Caufield.

Edit: Forgot Cozens had a good year this season.

You're higher on Caufield than me. I would take Cozens at 4th.

I think with hindsight and knowing what we need today, Cozens would be my pick as well.

At the time of the draft it would have been Caufield though. And I still think he ends up the 2nd best player from that draft. But we need a 2C so much more than a 50 goal winger.

This sounds a little bit like "Jost/Kaut was a good pick because that was a bad draft".

That 2019 draft is looking pretty shitty so far.

I would probably take Cozens over Byram knowing the Avs need offence more than defence.

The guys beyond Newhook at 16 aren’t really blowing it up yet.

But yeah, Cozens then maybe a guy like Thomson/Heinola might have been better.

They should be able to find a decent 2C with the assets they have. Would be near impossible to trade for a young D man like Byram.

As it is, they'll probably need to lose one of Toews or Girard for cap reasons, which means they'll need Byram even more.

Pinto, Tomasino, Kaliyev, Maccelli, and Parssinen all look pretty good. It is early for full judgment on the draft. The book isn’t completely written on Newhook either. That said, Avs tend to rush their top guys to the NHL. Games played early is not a great sign of Newhook being better. Hell I think Jost is still top 7 or 8 in games played for the 16 draft… he’s not better than Bratt, McAvoy, Thompson, Fox, Kyrou, etc. who have played less games.

To me, it looks like there will be a handful or or top6/top 4 types picked behind Newhook at minimum.

Lindholm is a dream 2C. Avs could never afford him beyond next year though, so it’s not going to happen. They need someone with term.

Hopefully Lindholm throws a fit and demands a trade.
Looks like the players are happy in Calgary now that Sutter is gone. Don’t think Lindholm is going anywhere. Maloney said they’re pretty much gonna run it back with the same roster under a different coach.

The only legit 2C option for the Avs is probably Scheifele, or maybe someone like Schmaltz if he’s on the market

And both those guys are wings, though they might be able to slide into the middle playing in Colorado.

Well, no I agree that Pinto and Tomasino are most likely better and realistic picks there, but overall the pick hit reasonably well is all I'm saying. Whereas it will go down as a bust because "we can't draft outside the top 10".

To be honest, at this point I don’t even care about term.

I don’t care about age. I don’t care about salary. Don’t care about term.

I want the best possible chance to win a Stanley Cup in 2024. I don’t care if we are the worst team in the league for 5 years after that.

I just want another Cup while this core is at its best.
