If he hadn't learned a thing he'd be resigning JTC instead of acquiring RyJo.

What he does next is crucial. We need a very good top 6 winger to complete the top 6 if we want to compete with the Kings. No half measure.

Feels like it’s going to be a kinda wild offseason and one of those opening nights where I’m excited to see all the new acquisitions.
 
Getting RJ is a half measure. He’s no longer a number 2C. Basically JTC, with a bit more talent.

Our C depth next year will be:
Mac
RJ
Newhook

That’s f***ing putrid. CMac thinks that C depth is fit for a contender. Which means he hasn’t learned shit.

Is it better then last year? Maybe. But being slightly better then garbage, is still garbage.

1. Free agency ain't even here yet and he's got some cash to work with.
2. He got a decent 2C/3C for nothing and basically JTC AAV. Not franchise changing but a pretty solid move because RJ does things most Avs players don't do like get to the netfront and win faceoffs at a respectable clip.
3. He got a pretty damn good G for $3.5m AAV, VGK about to spend $5m over the same time for a player who is probably not quite as good over the long run.
4. He's still got the Toews card to use but you and I have zero idea what's being offered in return for that. Unless you have some special potion to use on other GMs where they give exactly what we want at the price we want it I think its a little hard to act like some plus-value 2C is just waiting to be picked off.
5. He's told EJ and probably soon JJ that he's moving on and relying on younger options which is massively important. Here's to hoping they don't have the injury bug from hell so they don't have to go to that well again this year.

At the very least, CMac should be hedging his bet on Johansen by adding a wing with center versatility. Quite frankly, it's not so much that they don't value centers as much as it's that they almost have a center aversion. It's a little bizarre to be honest.

And the way he tries to get by on just enough, is a little alarming. It's like he's going on a trip and he reads that the trip is 200 miles. CMac will only put enough fuel in the car for exactly 200 miles. If you have to make a detour, you're out of luck and you run out of gas. Nichushkin was that detour last year.

The other thing is, even if CMac loads up more this year like he should have done last year, he's still not off the hook for last year. Let's say he does more this year but Rantanen and Makar (*knock on wood) are injured next year. How long do you think it will take people to unforget the 2023 TDL?

I think it's the fear that this alone is the solution to 2C. It's the uncertainty. RyJo at 4M is a great addition to our team. I just don't think he should be penciled in at 2C. He has serious motor issues and to be frank, his production isn't that big of an upgrade over JTC, and we need a significant upgrade over last season's JTC in order to truly compete.

As for me, like you said, it's way too early in the summer to know for sure what CMac has in store. I love speculation and debate, but I won't truly raise more than my eyebrows until July 2nd.

Here's the problem with that kind of solution :

The Avs get a good #4C but Bednar isn't going to use Newhook as the #3C for more than a game or two and then will start bouncing him around all over the lineup on a nightly basis as he's been doing for 2 years. So then, he's going to bump-up the #4C we just signed to the #3C slot and that guy won't have the skillset to fill that position adequately full-time... so then we have improperly slotted players again.

If I can see it and just about everyone else can too - why wouldn't Avs management ?

RyJo trade was good as long as we get a decent top 6 winger. By decent I mean someone better offensively than ERod or JTC.

We need a 50+ pts guy...like Boeser or Garland.

Since when do the avs do rentals. He’s got two years left at 5.5 and capable of 30+ goals on this team. Can recoup assets next year if landeskog is completely healthy and back full time.
 
The only reason I think the Avs probably prefer a rental winger over a guy with term, is because of Landy's uncertainty.

If he comes back next year, that's $7M in cap space that would essentially be gone... And, then our Top 6 winger slots are completely full once again between Landy/Mikko/Nuke/Lehky.


And I think the Avs will account for that in anything they do.
