Rumor: 2023-2024 Trade Rumors and Free Agency: Offseason Edition

This.

I think people get blinded by the fact that the Avs have been fortunate enough to draft 29, 8, 96 and 92 all in the top 10 of the draft. Also have 4 who looks to be solid and on the up swing.

When you have that kind of success in the top 10 of the draft it's easy to hide the mistakes and shortcomings.

If we take a look at drafting non-first round, extremely poor. Amongst the worst in the league.

Trades have been solid in the offseason. Honestly this is what has actually made us competitive. If we didn't pull off some of the better offseason trades in the league we'd be very screwed.

However trade deadline has been a complete failure most years, expect in '22 when we won the Cup. You'd think they'd learn from what they did in '22 by being aggressive. But resorted back to dumpster diving in '23 when actually needed some help. And then proceeded to shit the bed against Seattle round 1.

UFA has been poor. Very rarely do they make a quality UFA signing. One could argue that Nuke was the best in a long time, and honestly that was pure luck. Giving a league minimum shot to a guy who only was getting one more chance. Having it turn out the way it did was great but very unexpected.

In terms of Vegas, they got a bit fortunate with the expansion draft. But after that they've been aggressively doing whatever it takes to find success. Their owner and management want to win and will do what it takes to get there. Not sure our owners are on the same page as this.
yep, very true about vegas... very very aggressive. they have made some shit moves as a result but u can't question their intent

I think the Avs can spend money, but the money has to have a legit purpose and possible return. They can't just spend to spend. IE Avs can't get a new practice and training facility until they can team it up with real estate venture.
I seem to remember something, maybe an interview or longform article with Josh, that talked about a real estate venture that would include a new training/practice facility...but I don't think anything has ever been moved forward in that regard, right?

It has been stuck in limbo and last I knew, there was 'no real timeline.' They are trying to tie it to a large redevelopment downtown with a kickback to the real estate branch. IIRC Calgary, Vancouver and Colorado are the only pre 2000 facilities in the league that have not been massively renovated. Places like Pittsburgh have a massive facility that partners with a local hospital too. Avs have a facility that "Gets the job done." That's an actual quote from Cogliano.

Exactly they just aggressively go about finding the right combo. Their sole intention is to win. They aren't concerned about loyalties, just get the right players in to win. Won't be surprised if they make another splashy move to get better this offseason.

Can't say the Avs owners or management were on the page of trying to win last year. They sure didn't act like it and did nothing to address glaring needs. They sure looked like they were just trying to get through the year and didn't care about the results.

I don’t understand why they have to buy out players like Wheeler or Brodie. They can’t just trade them? I mean this players have value

If they had value, they wouldn't be getting bought out. (I have doubts Brodie will be bought out though)
Wheeler still puts up 50 to 60 points a season, how is that not valuable? They can’t even get a pick for him? Anything will be better than buyout. Get a 2nd round pick. Hell get a 3rd round pick or whatever

He only has one more year left on his contract. Trade and retain some of the salary and get a pick. That’s better than buyout
Retain 50% and you might get a taker (not guarantee), but you're still out over $4m in cash and maybe get a mid to late round pick or crap prospect. Buying him out costs a touch under 1.5m less this season... which is the smarter business decision.

Jets are about to clean house. Wheeler gone, Hellebuyck gone. They need to start getting some picks and prospects or players back if they’re rebuilding or retooling.

They're going to re-tool because they can't afford to rebuild... but Wheeler won't get anything of value. He's a slower, overpaid, PP specialist at this point who has a very limiting NTC.

But with ltir and insurance the avs wouldn't be spending 10M more. They'd be spending the same amount with insurance covering it.

Also how come the insurance companies are actually paying Stone's contract while he's on pretend IR?

Or am I not understanding how the IR insurance works?
From my understanding, teams need to wait either 3/6 months to receive LTIR insurance. However, I don’t believe it’s mandatory for a team to ask insurance to pay.

In Stone’s case, they might’ve decided to just eat the cost rather than have insurance check-up on his injury every so often. I believe the league has a system to check up on LTIR players, but I think it’s to check that the team isn’t forcing a player to stay on LTIR.

Retooling they are still.in the upper half of teams in the West.

Still a playoff team although I believe Vancouver will be a playoff team next year and someone has to fall out.

My bet would be Seattle

During the season, the Canadiens were asking for a first-round pick as part of a package for Edmundson, but that price may drop slightly now that he will only be available to a team for one playoff run before his contract expires.

The Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken were among the teams that reportedly express interest in Edmundson ahead of the trade deadline and it is possible those clubs circle back to check on his availability now.

Edmundson, who comes with a $3.5 million salary cap hit, owns a 10-team no-trade list as part of his contract.
