Are we already prepared for the announcement 5 after UFA opens where they say...

"we feel we can find a 2C within the organization, but are always looking for ways to improve the team..."

If the Avalanche aren't going to get a 2C I hope they at least do their best to get some epic depth and great wingers.

I dread this. CMac scares the shit out of me, he has no f***ing clue what's going on.

I tend to agree, but want to see if management can have a bounce back season. It took a year or so for everyone to come around on Bednar.

I'm not saying management is the same as coaching, however there are a good number of coaches who have amazing first seasons with new teams then fall off over the following years. Coaches with longer tenures generally have a slower raise to greatness.

I'd like to think CMac can turn it around. I've just seen nothing that would indicate that it'll happen.

I understand being underwhelmed with his first season as GM, and even agree with being underwhelmed (as I was too)...but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say "no f***ing clue".

The guy was name-dropped and credited by Pierre Dorion as getting the Duchene trade back on track. I think he CAN do the job, but he can't approach this season like last. The Avs' window got smaller this last season with the depth that departed, and will get smaller this upcoming, and so on.

I mean adding someone like Kevin freaking Hayes would have been an upgrade over what we trotted out.

You do realize that CMac was just as much the GM in 2015 as he is now, right? He and Joe have been, and continue to be, along with Bednar, a team making decisions on personnel. IDK why now people suddenly have lost faith in the same group a year after winning The Cup.

How long are we going to let CMac get the benefit of the doubt because he helped with the Duchene trade? Especially when a non-trivial amount of people here can't wait to get rid of Girard?

I'm not buying that management is going to roll the dice with Alex Newhook as next year's 2C:

Even with the Val Nichushkin situation in the playoffs, Bednar turned to Matt Nieto on the 2nd line. When that didn't work, he tried out another checking line player in Lars Eller.

That is a pretty strong condemnation of Newhook's play and role on the team. Even more so when you consider the context of that particular series with Seattle, where the Avalanche were hurting for offense.

So I want to answer your question, but I have one of my own as well:

What do you mean "how long are we going to let CMac get the benefit of the doubt..." with regard to the Duchene trade? The guy just completed his first year as GM. I'm not saying he gets a long leash, necessarily, but I'm also not going to say he "f***ing sucks" after just one year.

Now, that all being said, I was as disappointed as anyone else with how he constructed the roster last year. It was a horrible mistake to go in to the season with the massive, glaring, hole at 2C, and it was a horrible mistake to not do ANYTHING of note at the deadline to try and get this team in the best possible shape to go after another Cup.

Now, hindsight being what it is, do we think they'd get past Dallas or Vegas if they get out of R1? I think MAYBE Dallas, if Oetter leaks the same type of goals he did against Seattle. Not sure they get past Vegas. Maybe they do, as Dallas doesn't have the type of gamebreakers like MacKinnon, Mikko, or Makar. But, I think if they do ANYTHING of note at the deadline this team ends where I imagined they end at the beginning of the season--of which I'd said that they make it to the WCF but lose.

CMac was a deer in headlights last season. Froze at every possible important moment.

I have no faith he will make better decisions this summer.

He will have to have a 10/10 perfect offseason, for me to start regaining faith in his abilities to run a hockey team.

I think we get passed Stars, but I think Vegas beats us. But a WCF exit with a depleted roster I think everyone here is pretty happy with the result.

But even then it's hard to know. Maybe a fluke happens and we lose to the Stars or we sweep Vegas after Eichel breaks his leg. That's why you gotta make some moves.

Desperate Cmac move:

Laughton and Hayes (at 50%) for Newhook and 1st 2023.
I mean… I don’t think that’d be awful. If they found a way to get Sharangovic I think the forward cores would be much improved.

Sharangovic-Mack-Lehk
Nuke-Hayes-Mikko

Hayes at 3.5 would add some big flexibility to add some depth pieces in the off season and deadline.

If we're going to do a sign and trade with Toews Florida is a good destination. I'm pretty sure he'd say yes.
Who would we get back from Florida for Toews?

They rolled the dice last year on his with similar numbers in 21-22. I wouldn't doubt the Avs' willingness to continue to put their young guys in positions they want them to be in. They did it for years with Compher and Jost. They did it with Duchene, ROR, Statsny, and Wolski... and that's just at center. Sometimes it has worked, others it hasn't. They do show they organizationally will force the issue until they just can't anymore.

On CMac... give me a second year. If he Fs up again, then I'll join the can his ass group. But frequently 1st year GMs are incredibly passive and learn from that mistake. Gonna hope he's doing just that.

Perhaps I'm wrong thinking this, but based on what he did last season this is how I view CMac:

He gets this year, if he pretty much repeats last year, he's on the hot seat and gets another season, if it's another repeat then he's gone. That would make anywhere from 2-3 seasons as GM.

However, we also have to recognize that this Avs team, post-Pierre Lacroix, has NEVER been as aggressive as we wish they'd be. When things line up, they'll go for it, but I don't think they'll ever be as aggressive as we wish they'd be. They're just a cog in the KSE Empire. Most of the time that will mean, unfortunately, they'll just be spinning the wheels to not lose money.

Honestly, the bigger mistake was Sakic not going "all in" sooner. Waiting until the end of MacKinnon's sweetheart deal was a HUGE blunder.
