Yea I disagree with AJ here.

Jesus does he actually WATCH hockey or does he just read about it, I mean seriously. Frikkin' TJ Brodie who Calgary let walk because he was struggling immensely playing anything more than a #4 only to have the laffs sign him and play him too high as well and come to the same conclusion what 4 years later?? Lol ! He's not getting any better either. IF the laffs actually do buy him out, he's probably still going to be overpaid because he's gonna going to get a reputation contract. The Avs would never have interest in this stooge.
Yeah Friedman and Seravalli/Gregor have been pushing this hard. Funny enough when they bring up Colorado having such a big defense they’re always sure to point out that Girard was absent.

Girard will have value because his contract is so god damn good. There are a lot of teams out there that have a hard time attracting talent like Winnipeg. And there are teams out there who refuse to pay players market value when their contracts renew (Carolina). So having that AAV and term with Girard makes him very valuable to teams like that. I’d bet there are definitely a lot of teams who play into the big defense theory and want nothing to do with him too though.
Check out Calgary's D if they can't sign Hanifin and decide to trade him...

Ya. It's reasonable money for a solid 3C, so if Kotka's offense never comes around, you're still getting a 3C at a solid cap hit especially as the cap rises.

If his offense does come around and he becomes a legit 2C, it's a steal and exactly the kind of money we need to be spending on a 2C.

And personally I think if you throw him in the middle of Lehky/Mikko for an all Finn line it wouldn't take long for that offense to break out.
Then somehow go get Laughton. I think I'd trust a 2c/3c committee of Kotka/Laughton.

Brodie is fine if he comes cheap. I find it funny everyone was on board with OEL when Brodie is clearly the better player.

Give me Brodie over OEL all day.

Though I think OEL is getting underrated as well, he's just been miscast in Vancouver thr last couple of years. He's going to bounce back on a team like Boston in a more sheltered role next year.

But yeah Brodie is just better. A legitimate top 4 guy, would be a great add for any team in need of a Top 4 defensive guy. Avs just don't have a need for him really.

They don't have a need for him other than the 50-60 games Manson will likely miss. You can argue the need but the viability of the idea is problematic.

Kotkaniemi sucks. He's been in the league for 5 full seasons now and he still sucks despite all the opportunities he has been given. He is one of the issues in Carolina because he can't play 2C and they penciled him there. Not unlike Newhook here.

If you think Newhook isn't good enough after 2 years there's no way in Hell you should want Kotkaniemi and his 7 year contract.

When's the last time you watched Kotka? He developed into a great two-way center and is at worst a ~40-45 pt center signed through his prime. I'd bet money Kotka's contract becomes a steal in a few years and he puts up 60+ pt seasons.

Newhook can't even play center, let alone be useful in other areas of the ice.

He was penciled at 2C to replace Trocheck and literally lost his spot to old man Stastny after a few months (reminds you of something?). He struggled during the playoffs too.

You do realize he's only 22. Signed for another 7 years. Not entirely comparable but it took MacKinnon 5 years to "break out"?

Mackinnon is the exception, not the rule. Kotka has been in the league for 5 full seasons.

Kotka is a very good defensive center with a surprising amount of grit. The offense comes in spurts and isn’t consistent. When he’s clicking (like Jan-April) he looks like a legit 2C. When he’s not, he looks like a pure defensive specialist. It could eventually click. I have some similar doubts that he’ll suddenly be a 65 point guy, but I wouldn’t rule it out either. Odds are he’s just a 45 point defensive center.

So I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as @Balthazar paints him, but I wouldn’t be lining up to grab him either. If he does round out into a 2C though, Carolina has a sweetheart deal. If he doesn’t, he’s fairly paid for a high end 3C.
