Exactly . If this information is « out there » it could signal that he could be traded soon and this is just posturing for the new team about what to expect negotiation wise .

I know it doesn’t solve our second line Center issue, but I would like to see Jonathan Toews sign here , still a good (or useful) third line face off guy .
I want Toews, too. I hope the Oilers don’t get him for cheap.

Isn't asking for $9 million basically saying he'll settle for $7.5-8 million?

Probably a little below $9M but not much... It would likely be a scenario where teams would have started at ~7.5M, with PLD at 9M and they end up settling around $8.5M.

Still, that's probably too much for us. Though it could work if the cap really did jump to say $90M by the time Mikko is a UFA AND Landy actually is done... But we don't know either of those things yet.

Doubtful IMO… 8.5-8.75 more likely

I could be wrong, but everytime one of these rumors come out, the players tends to sign for a few million less than he was seeking. Agents always just throw out ridiculous numbers. The tweet also doesn't state how long he wanted his extension to be. For all we know he could be seeking $9 million a year for 5 years. I don't think there's a GM that's gonna give him a 8.5x7 or 8.5x8.

There is certainly a GM that would. Going down that much is rather rare. Half a mil is fairly common. PLD will get paid if that is his main goal, if his main goal is Montreal, he’ll probably have to take a less.

That's absurd... He's easily worth that quite frankly.

That's what I thought...he will end up with the Horvat contract.

Personally I don't think you should have a 9M player playing on the 2nd line, especially not for a team like us way too many highly-paid players already. Pass.

Agreed , no thanks

Is that the "trade in the pipeline" you were referring to @henchman21 ?
Jackets should say no way

He has long covid

I mean the Avs could have just kept Kadri if that's the case.

I very much doubt they give a 2C that much money.

I think they’re very much different situations.

PLD probably hasn’t even peaked yet. Kadri was very close to falling off the age cliff at the time of his extension.

I always feel more comfortable giving out dollars and term for players that aren’t close to their decline.

I agree with you on the Avs direction though. This doesn’t seem like a CMac move.

It most likely means losing Rantanen, almost certainly means losing Toews...

I think Toews, Bo, or Sammy+ would probably go in the trade.

Then afterwords I’d look at moving Nichushkin for some cheaper talent. Maybe one third liner and a couple prospects ready to make the jump.

I would go after Frederic if him not being qualified is true

That would be a good 3C target, but I'd be worried about how much he's gonna get if Boston is that worried they're gonna let him walk away.

Nichushkin is completely untouchable at this point given what happened to him and the injuries he played through.

Lehkonen maybe you move though... Maybe you even move Lehkonen in a PLD trade.

Kadri would still be here if he took less money.

The Avs clearly have a preference for paying people what they think they're worth, and 2C doesn't seem to be a role they want to break the bank for.
That's why someone like Boone Jenner would be the perfect target by the Avs. 29 years old. A captain. Signed for 3 more seasons at $3.75M AAV.

If Peeke comes on the market now, Avs should sniff around. Cheap, RD, solid skater, not overly physical but has some in him, more of a 5 but can play up. He'd be really nice insurance for the inevitable Manson injury (and honestly probably pass him on the depth chart anyway).
We do need a 3rd pairing RD, unless we are running with one of Hunt, Malinski, or Merkley.

Another nonsensical CBJ offseason to try and keep them in the middle. Provorov isn’t that guy and hasn’t been for years. I like Severson but that contract will be bad.

Personally, I’m not a believer in Werenski being a guy to build a defense around either between his injuries and mistakes. Top pair for sure and a #1 when everything is going to plan but I don’t see it enough.

Hayes coming next….
