So... It isn't Montreal or bust for Dubois. Sounds like it will likely be the exact same situation as Tkachuk last summer for the Jets, a sign and trade deal where Dubois will have 5-6 teams he's willing to go with.

With that, he wont be cheap to acquire at all. I thought yesterday that he would be cheap because it sounded like he wasn't going to sign long term anywhere and just wanted to go straight to UFA as quickly as possible. But if he's gonna sign an 8 year deal and then be traded to one of 5-6 teams, its not gonna be cheap. Not necessarily Tkachuk levels of expensive, but if the Avs are on the list of 5-6 teams it'll cost us Byram I would bet.

I can't remember who, but someone made a point that Montreal may not even want to pay him with the guys they currently have as well.

To me he sounds like a good fit here, and could maybe even have a bit of a breakout if it clicks.

Even if we're on his list we aren't outbidding the other 5 teams. It would cost Byram++ to acquire PLD on an 8 year deal. That's not the Avs way.

Probably going East with a cup contender. I agree with @henchman21 that Boston and Carolina make sense.

Y'all are a buzz kill lol.

Who was your favorite Lindholm?

Yeah, I said it on the main boards as well but Its worth discussing here as well I think...

To me, there's seemingly ~15 Centers that are available(To varying levels) this summer that are possible Avs targets, also of a wide range in terms of cost as well. And I would rank them in the following tiers and from Left to Right in order of preference as well:

Tier 1: PLD, Lindholm, Scheifele, JT Miller

Tier 2: Backlund, Mittelstadt, Kuznetsov, Hayes

Tier 3: Laughton, Henrique, Roslovic, O'Reilly, Toews, Monahan, Dvorak

IMO, the bare minimum for what they should do, is grabbing a guy in that tier 2 list. If the best they do this summer is one of the names in the tier 3 list, I think that's a complete failure job and most likely a cheap and will be failed attempt at a solution. Tier 2 would likely work, but not exactly going all in or getting the best available. Tier 1 is the 4 guys to where I think we're getting a guaranteed top quality 2C solution and one that will make us a big favorite again next year.

What I would really like to see them do, is grab 2 centers out of these groups, grabbing one of those tier 2/3 guys to be the 3C next year on top of grabbing a guy in the 1st two tiers to be the 2C.

Because even though the 2C spot is clearly the biggest need this summer, we also dont have a 3C signed and most likely(Hopefully) will be losing JTC this summer who had been the 3C the last couple of years before being thrown into 2C duties last year. I really hope the Avs move on from Newhook as a Center, if they dont move him in a trade at least set him up for success by keeping him strictly on the Wing, even if its in the Top 6 I think he could do well with that stability for a full season.

To me, grabbing some combination of say PLD + Laughton, or Lindholm + Hayes, Scheifele + Mittelstadt, etc. etc. I think we have the assets to get two trades done tbh... If they go something like Newhook + 2023 1st as the main basis of one trade, and then use Girard+ for a 2nd trade I think they could solve both the 2C and 3C holes in the roster. But they could also potentially look

That said, CMac hasn't given me any sort of confidence or belief in his ability to actually be aggressive and make big cup contender type of moves. So I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he does something extremely frustrating like giving up the bare minimum for Henrique at full salary, keeping Newhook and expecting him to once again be a 2C/3C with Henrique in the other spot. Or even worse, re-sign JTC for like $5.5M.

After watching these playoffs, I wouldn’t mind the Avs figuring out a deal around Sam Bennett.

Buys them two years, which lines up with Rantanen’s contract.

Of course not. I don’t think a major source ever reported that was the case.

The Montreal rumors were about signing there as a UFA. Not demanding a trade to Montreal.

Part of the rumors about a potential trade at the Montreal draft were they weren't willing to give up a piece Winnipeg was asking for.

Doesn't make sense for the Habs to give up good assets, if they think they can get him as a UFA. They're not ready to contend yet anyway, so might as well wait, and see how it plays out. I'm sure they'd like to bring in Dubois, but they don't need to hitch their wagon to him either.

I just dont think he's even remotely available at this point. Not after such a deep run from Florida in a year where they really shouldn't have went this far.

They should be even better next year, and Bennett is a pretty key player on that team.

But everyone’s been terrified because of this false narrative that he’s forcing his way to MTL. It’s clearly not true or else literally any halfway notable reporter would have brought it up. I think PLD didn’t want to be in Columbus or Winnipeg but there’s nothing to prove he’s MTL or bust really.

Depends on who you classify as halfway notable. Arpon Basu is the Habs reporter for the Athletic, and he reported this below last year. Multiple sources confirming some awfully specific rumors about him openly talking about wanting to go to Montreal.

"For several months, it has been an open secret in Winnipeg: Pierre-Luc Dubois would like to play in Montreal.

Multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic that wearing the Canadiens’ bleu, blanc et rouge is a dream that Dubois is not shy to talk about in private company.

Now Dubois’ agent, Pat Brisson, is making those desires as public as possible. Brisson has stirred the Dubois-to-Montreal pot in multiple media appearances this week in a clear attempt to catalyze trade talks between the Jets and Canadiens.

“Montreal is a city he would probably … I can talk about it because he doesn’t have a contract at the moment — he’s a restricted free agent,” Brisson told TVA Sports in French on Wednesday. “Montreal is a place, a city he’d like to play in. That’s all I can say about that.”

A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Athletic that Dubois attended the NHL Draft in Montreal because he believed a trade would be completed on the draft floor. As first reported by Radio-Canada’s Martin Leclerc, Montreal offered three players to the Jets in hopes of securing Dubois’ rights."

Yet Brisson came out and publicly squashed the MTL only narrative that everyone was pushing the other day. I’m sure he interest there but everyone and their grandmother said it was MTL or bust for him when that was never the case.

I think the rumors of a potential sign and long term deal are interesting, if he has multiple teams on his trade list. That obviously could lead to a long term deal somewhere other than Montreal.

But Brisson and Hughes in Montreal were pretty obviously flirting with each other a year ago, with these media comments that sounded like they were signaling interest in each other down the line, that just skirted the tampering line.

Brisson:
“Montreal is a city he would probably … I can talk about it because he doesn’t have a contract at the moment — he’s a restricted free agent. Montreal is a place, a city he’d like to play in. That’s all I can say about that.”

Hughes (responding to a question about acquiring Dubois):
“If we had the means to acquire a big centre who is established in the NHL,” Hughes said, “for sure we would have an interest.”

Brisson made those original comments because PLD didn't have a contract. I am sure now he is wanting to tone it down because the situation is different.

I will be very surprised if Dubois ends up anywhere else. It is going to be Montreal even if he has a 1 year stop with a contending team.
