Which package is more valuable?

A. 31st overall 2023, 37th overall in 2023
(or)
B. Cond. 2024 1st, 2024 4th, Kubalik, Sebrango

Probably package B. But it is pretty close especially factoring in the strength of the 2023 draft.

I'd see it as Kubalik + 4th + Sebrango are roughly equal to the 37th pick. So then it's #31 in 2023 versus the 2024 1st which could be anywhere yet but is probably very likely to be at least 17-32 range.

Why 4 years? Does DeBrincat think he's Matthews or something?

Not sure it's a smart move for him to bet on himself at this point, IMO he has overproduced so far and should have banked on that.

The plan is obviously to sign an 8 year contract at a higher AAV in 4 years. We'll see.
Yep, I'd say very risky move. I'd always push for the max contract and it shouldn't be an issue if you are a free agent.

DeBrincat was probably looking for 8 years, 64-72 mill right now but settled for 31.5 over 4 years. I could easily see him making it up at least on the low end of 64 mill when he's an UFA at the age of 29 by getting a similar contract to this one.

Holy f*** that trade is hideous for Ottawa. Dorian f***ing sucks.

CMac/Sakic can be frustrating at points but at least they don't do this level dumb shit.

Boston's 1st next year is gonna be late and in a weaker draft, a 4th, a guy in the ECHL, and Kubalik, who is good, but is a UFA next summer.

Detroit fleeced them.

Nah, 7th overall + 39th overall + 3rd rounder is way more valuable.

Package A was what Montreal traded for Alex Newhook.

You have to wonder how much Debrincat affected this value. For all we know he may have dictated the teams.

To be fair he's trying to make the playoffs and it was a bet on DeBrincat wanting to stay and join his core. Should have known that his chance of keeping him were super slim with DeBrincat being American and becoming UFA.

Good move for Detroit.

I’m not really sure I see Yzerman’s vision with that team though. I wonder if he’s starting to get pressured by ownership.

They’ve obviously gotten quite a bit better this off-season, but they’ve really loaded up on a lot of vets. I guess they want to be a mid tier team and then hope they hit on the plethora of picks they’ve made the last few years.

Detroit only has (4) players left who were on the team two years ago (2020-2021): Fabbri, Larkin, Lindstorm, and Rasmussen.

Whether Detroit is good this year or not, it's clear Yzerman has completely cut the crust off the you-know-what sandwich Holland left behind.

Yet Yzeman is the one who signed Chiarot, Copp, Compher and Perron to terrible contracts. I say he's making his own sandwich.

Followed up the you know what sandwich left behind with gems like Compher for 5 yrs, $5.1M AAV, Copp for 5 yrs, $5.625M AAV, Chiarot for 4 yrs, $4.75M AAV, and Holl for 3 yrs, $3.4M AAV.

Yzerman definitely signed a bunch of crappy contracts, don't get me wrong.

But lord, at least those players (aside from Chiarot) are decent. Look at some of the gem contracts Holland passed down: Abdelkaeder $4.25M, DeKeyser $5M, Helm $3.85M, Neilsen $5.25M.

I wouldn't pay that much money for Alex DeBrincat but that's just me.
The thing about Debrincat is that if you’re not necessarily a Stanley cup team, he’s an excellent player for regular season success. And regular season success brings playoff games and therefore playoff revenue.

You just don’t know what you get from him in a playoff run/atmosphere.

I mean that didn't materialize for Ottawa last season. DeBrincat doesn't get this Red Wings team to the playoffs.

I mean I understand trading him, he wasn't going to resign. But that return is horrendous. You got to get something of consequential value for a guy that is pretty much a guarantee to get at least 30 goals.
