I don't know about rushing it. Next season will be Yzerman's 5th as GM of the Red Wings. Sakic's 5th year as GM we made the playoffs as a WC team in 17-18. Took him 9 seasons as GM to win the Cup.

The problem I have is him targeting a bunch of average players to the point where he has too many of them. He is building an insanely average looking team with IMO only one high end piece in Moritz Seider (I do not believe Lucas Raymond is an elite player).

Just a strange way to build a team. Then again, I guess if you don't have that many high end pieces you might as well try to grab average players if you aren't going to tank.
In this instance, it’s important to recognize the big distinction between a team’s best interests v. its GM’s own personal interest. Sometimes those 2 aspects are aligned, but often they are at odds with each other (like it’s starting to look like here).

I think that Yzerman started this rebuild the right way and generally making the right moves. Tear it down and tank for high picks that will eventually turn the boat around. But there’s a big element of luck to that and Yzerman and the wings have been incredibly unlucky with the lottery picks they’ve been dealt. As such, their rebuild has never really gotten the high high end assets needed.

Now, 5 years after taking over and nowhere near a successful rebuild, Yzerman now has his back/job up against the wall and is getting pressured to put together a playoff or even semi-competitive team. As a result, he doesn’t have many options, and the only thing he can really do at this point is sign the JTC’s and Holl’s of the world to try and do anything that will justify enough improvement to keep his job.

So while he didn’t “rush it” before, he’s now at the point where he’s got to rush it or force it before he/the team were ready for it.

Their lineup right now (obviously lines not 100% accurate):

DeBrincat - Larkin - Raymond
Fabbri - Copp - Perron
Rasmussen - Compher - Berggren
Soderblom - Fischer - Kostin/Sprong

Walman- Seider
Chiarot - Holl
Gostisbehere - Maatta

Husso
Reimer

Just an insanely average team. Like I said, it feels like Yzerman is aiming for 38-38-6 next season with that lineup. I know you mentioned Seattle but IMO Seattle last season is not going to replicate what they did moving forward. Now, having more high end talent show up will help balance that out but Detroit doesn't have that high end talent.
We all know that Compher is a 2C… C’mon man!

Sure, good season it seems.

Yes and Colton has had two good seasons it seems.

Ross seems Poised to get a good amount more and probably more term. Eye tests and analytics definitely play into contracts these days, cates was a defensive beast that put up decent offensive numbers too.

I would say more than a million dollars is a good amount.

Damn shame detroit is in this position.

A retained Konecny is my new primary target.

Or at least a deal with Girard where we get a legit dman back for the bottom pair.

I don't get what Detroit is doing.

They sell off last spring at the deadline, signaling they're not yet done with the rebuild. Then turn around and give JTC 5x5+ this summer followed by this. They aren't competing in the next four years, why the hell are they paying DeBrincat to be a core player for four years for?
True. Seems bad planning.

Nah, Byram is just overrated here and got overpaid by the Avs to avoid an Offersheet. Pretty obvious with why it got done so quickly.

He's a better player then Yokr but certainly not a $2.25M and more then double aav better.
Byram played 3 more minutes if TOI last season, had been .5 PPG since entering the league, and played some key minutes in the cup run.

All that factors into his contract, along with the threat of an OS. He may not be $2.25 mil better than York, but this league still pays for past accomplishments and reputation, which Byram has.

I don’t think Byram is overpaid, but we did pay fair value.

York was still in the AHL for a portion of last year on Philly's depth chart so pretty easy to say Byram is ahead of him. That being said Philly should have tried going long term on that contract.

What does success look like for the Drouin signing? He was well above .5 pt/game in Montreal, but deemed a disappointment. I'd be content with that level of production and anything more would be gravy.

I know it might be overly optimistic since he's damaged goods at this point, but I wonder what effect just getting Drouin out of Montreal will have on his headspace. Now, granted, he needs to put in the work himself to get mentally tougher, but still... that alone could give him the ability to be successful in the targeted role we expect.

18/45 would be nice?

Honestly if he hits ~45 points I think people should be quite pleased with that.

For basically league minimum to get that kind of production, even if he's still really bad at everything else would be decent value.

Lots more points than he's been producing is one way to measure if he's successful but if he's smart with the puck and improves our passing game in the offensive zone and doesn't turn it over a lot, that will help a lot. We've lost a lot of skill, so if he's firing the puck around fast and smart that top line will be more dangerous because of the talent surrounding him. He could also be a big boon on the PP. I feel like if he and Ryjo are on the PP together we could be even more dangerous than usual.
