I'm predicting Colorado is going to move Sam Girard in the next (2) days.

If Byram+Colton will cost roughly $8M combined, that leaves around $7M to be allocated towards a 6F, 9F, 6D, and (3) fourth liners.

The Avalanche could gamble on a number of ~$1M UFAs (i.e. Drouin, JVR, etc.), but that doesn't seem like their style. By comparison, were Colorado to move Sammy G, they'd have space for a proper top-6 and may be able to take on another "freebee" player (i.e. Johansen, Hall, etc.).

Calgary is about to be down (2) LHD's and desperately need players with term, so I could see them as an option for Sammy G. I could also see Carolina, who seem to be re-tooling their blue line this off-season; or potentially Seattle, if they miss out on EK65.

I predicted the Avs would add an RFA center, but I was way off on the player (Frost). Based on my past accuracy, expect Byram or Toews to be moved in the near future...
Uh, no?

The Avalanche need (3) fourth liners.

That number may be filled partially by internal players, like Ben Meyers. But Meyers (specifically) is an RFA, so you have to subtract his next contract from that ~$7M figure.

Anyway you slice it, a chunk of whatever is left post-Byram/Colton extensions is going towards the fourth line. That is, unless the Avalanche plan on using Olofsson and MacDermid as every day players, which I seriously doubt.

OEL at a reasonable cap hit might not be bad but the problem is it won't be. You know some schmuck is giving him $3.5m per...
You’re just paying for the name at this point. I’m not sure he was even that good in the first place.

Players that ball out in Arizona don’t usually do too well elsewhere…just look at Bødker.

To me it's about slotting and if you're able to get a guy like that and play him on your bottom pair as a #5 and you're paying him say 2x$2m it's probably a sweet deal. He can play a bit more when you need him to and there's just so much less that's expected from the player, I think he'd do very well on a team as deep as the Avs.

But there's going to be some GM out there that's desperate to save his job that's going to be looking to 'round out his Top-4' and give him too much money and probably too much term and it probably won't end well because I don't think he's a top-4 guy anymore.

Logan O'Connor exists.

O'Connor ranked 7th in ATOI amongst Avalanche forwards in 2022-2023. For a team with extremely limited cap space, it's difficult to envision him taking on a smaller role in 2023-2024.

His skill set is obviously more geared towards a 4th line role, but he's a 3rd liner on this team.

Yo can we stop the Jonathan Drouin stuff like he's going to be too expensive and he's not who you think he is. Like he played with Mac a decade ago, he's going to disappoint
I think that unless Drouin wants to sign for super cheap ie PTO or less than $1M then he's unlikely to join the Avs. I think they'll bring in different types of players to play with Colton but I could be wrong.

Still Drouin put up 29 points last year in 58 games. I could see a team like Arizona being interested and they could afford to pay him more, give him a better spot in the lineup and offer a market with zero pressure to win. I could see him there on a $2.5M deal.

I disagree with that statement - I agree with the first part of the sentence though he should be a 4th liner. He was a 3rd liner on last year's team.

It will be a huge failure if he's playing 3rd line minutes this upcoming season. I like him but he's a #11-#14 forward on any team. He hurts you less when he's playing under 10 mins per game. You can't have a guy on your 3rd line go on a 30 game scoreless streak especially when he's more of a scorer than a playmaker.
