Predictions for Avs UFA:

Sign Jonathan Drouin 1 year, 1M
Sign Jesper Fast 2 years, 2.25M
Sign Andrew Cogliano 1 year, 1.25M
Sign John Klingberg 1 year, 2.5M
Sign Mattias Janmark 1 year, 1.5M

Not what I'd prefer but those are my predictions. Avs head into the season with:

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Johansen - Rantanen
Janmark - Colton - Fast
Cogliano - Meyers - O'Connor

Toews - Makar
Byram - Manson
Girard - Klingberg

Georgiev
Francouz

Leaves ~7M to re-sign Colton and Byram.

I still do not quite get the Drouin love other than he played well with Nate a long time ago. I feel like Malgin could do the same thing….had good chemistry with Val. Not saying I would want to but it seems comparable. What am I missing on Drouin?

So much still that needs to happen, which non Avs off seasons are you all interested in seeing what happens?

Looking forward to see how Toronto convinces themselves to run it back and hopefully see Holland make hilarious Oiler moves!

Played with MacK in junior, former high pick. If he’s gonna work anywhere it’ll be here but I can’t believe how little that guy has done to date in the nhl.

Any bottom six UFAs got anyone's interest? I still like Jesper Fast if we can get him on a two year deal. Wouldn't mind seeing Pauly Walnuts get either a PTO or a dirt cheap deal to play on the 4th line, LW or C, as needed. Outside of that, I'm not sure what all we can afford right now without knowing the terms of Byram's deal. That's going to make July 1st tricky.
Go get ROR too! LET'S GET THE BAND BACK TOGETHER!!!

Drouin/Mack/Nuke
ROR/Ryjo/Mikko
Lehky/Ross/LOC
Cogs/Staz/Fast
Meyers

f***, Duchene tho. He ain't comin' back

I don’t think anyone here is in love with Drouin. I think most people have accepted the fact that it is a big possibility. The Avs like to go for these types of reclamation projections whose style of play fits with the team. There’s obviously the Mackinnon connection, and the fact that despite his struggles, he still has talent.

The reality is, the Avs need to find excess value in their contracts. With the players they already have on the books, that becomes less and less likely. Drouin offers a POTENTIAL boom and excess value if it clicks for him here.

Considering he was able to put up 40 points on a bottom 10 offense, it bodes well that he can possibly put up a 50ish point season in a top 10 offense.

If you can get that production for cheap, that’s exactly what the Avs need to find in FA.

Just because a few posters bang a drum for Drouin relentlessly does not make it a "fact" or "big possibility" as you've stated above.

The expectation for Drouin is based in nostalgia but also in a "If he can't find his game here he can't find it anywhere". He and his agent have to know that while he might get a fair number of offers the majority will be 1 year and not very high. His best hope for a future is to have a banger season and put up some numbers. Playing in Colorado at least gives him talent to play with.

And what happens if a team comes and offer sheets Byram for 7 mil per?

I don't think we can sign anyone until Colton and Byram sign their RFA deals. We can't risk an offer sheet.

Would Drouin really take such a big pay cut?

I dont really think he has much of a case to get more. He's been pretty bad the last couple of years. He's soft as butter, doesn't score goals at all, and he's poor defensively.

The only thing he provides is playmaking pretty much. And even in all of that he played to a 40 point pace(29 in 58 games last year).

Quite frankly he's probably not even worth a contract to most teams... But the Mackinnon effect and our need for super cheap forwards is what opens the door for him to come here. Where worst case scenario you continue to get a soft one dimensional forward who probably scores 10 goals and 30 assists in 82 games without providing anything else.

Best case scenario, reunited with Mack he finds more motivation and drive to succeed, turning him into a slightly less soft player, a little more engagement on Defense, and playing alongside Mack he pots ~15-20 Goals and ~40 assists.

I think its a worthwhile gamble for the Avs specifically because of Mackinnon. But I'd say most other teams it isn't worth taking a chance on honestly.

The options as I see it are
1. signing someone for less than market value that wants to win
2. picking up a red flag
3. moving Colton up and having a bottom 6 with non existent scoring ability.

Then you either trade Girard which actually would create more cap space in some ways... Or you let Byram walk and depending on what team sends the OS you flip the draft pick capital for big time forward help and maybe grab a cheap Dman. Or if it's a bad team like Montreal that sends the OS, hang onto the 1st and see if we get another Byram situation with a Top 5 pick yet again.
