I have just heard surface general stuff but from as far as I understand it. Shanahan had a big influence on how that team was shaped. Like I said though that’s just what I remember
Yeah but Dubas is still somewhat an immature baby who fights with fans in stands and just not a very good GM. I’ve never seen another GM fighting with fans in the arena during a game

Now that the Karlsson deal is finally done, I wonder if we start to see a few more deals/signings materialize quickly. Seeing how many pieces, picks, and salary stipulations were involved across the 3 teams really makes it clear that there were likely several other teams that were weighing the roster and cap implications of being the "Montreal" of the trade.

The Dumba signing is likely a product of that. I wonder if Kane will be too?

Naw...he's currently 34. But...I'm not sure how the rules work, but his birthday is Nov. 19th. So theortically, if he waits and signed until the 20th of November, he'd be 35 and eligible for performance bonuses if it's a one-year deal only.

At least, that's my understanding of the CBA.
Sadly the year is calculated in June 30 for those purposes. Kane isn’t eligible for a bonus laden contract until next season.

I’ve done quite a bit of armchair GM lately and on one I did explore the Kane addition. He’s made over $115 sheets in his career. I think he’d be fine signing a league min for half a year. With the Avs budget, he’s gotta be an option they’ve got written down. Not gonna find many players like him to sign for $1M or less. If healthy;?

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Kane
Nichushkin - Johansen - Rantanen
Wood - Colton - Kovalenko
Cogliano - NotBenMeyers - LOC
Poor Drouin. This is the 2nd lineup I’ve seen when we got Kane and Drouin just mysteriously disappeared. JD is an enigma

Need to bring him up just because of that name

I
Good at everything, great at nothing junior player who is undersized. His scoring is a bit overrated. He was the whole offense for the team and it all ran through him... not actually an indication of his actual offensive ability. His compete is good and he has some flashes that may show some PK and bottom 6 ability... but small frame and only an above average skater. His skating has taken leaps forward over the past 2-3 years, but I'm still not sure it is enough. Will be interesting to see if he can carve out a role in the bottom 6 there and eventually a NHL contract.
as I read it he was a -50 player faceoffs? Defense?

Legit forgot about him lol. Maybe put him on third with Colton and Kovalenko and then 4th would be Wood, Cogliano, and LOC? No one really plays C there tho. That’s why I think the last F add we do whether trade or free agency is a C.

So when do we re-sign Toews?

Walking is an absolutely brutal outcome and it doesn't really feel like a trade is going down either.

It'll either happen prior to the season or nearing July 1 (like June 25th-July 1st). If you look at Nuke, Landy, and Manson... they all happened right before UFA. MacK was done slightly into camp. The Avs don't typically extend the bigger dollar/term guys in the middle of the season. Frank is the only pending UFA with any term that I recall being signed midseason in the last few years.

Lets hope it does. No guarantees.

I would take Toews walking for free over the Avs extending him. Clearly he should have been traded this summer though.

But the Avs will extend him and it will get messy pretty quickly when they start losing players (Girard/Rantanen) and Toews starts aging.

You’d rather a top 15 NHL defenseman walk for free than stay on your favorite team?

He’s 29 years old with just over 300 NHL games on his body. This isn’t Mark Giordano we’re talking about here.

They'll dump Manson and Girard before they let Toews walk. He's exactly what the analytics department looks for in a player. I'd even go so far as to say they most likely value him higher than Bo too.

I'm confident Toews will be re-signed, but I think odds are higher it'll happen next summer. This is the same path they have taken with Landy, Nuke, Kadri, and Burkie. The only thing I'd think that changes the math is if Byram overtakes Toews on the top pairing and if Girard has a major comeback season.

I'd rather they had traded him for a butt load.

Enjoy Toews being a 'top 15 defenseman' because that isn't lasting for long.

Meh. Toews on the roster gives them the best chance to win another cup this year though, which is the best chance they have left.

Unless they could have swung some sort of Toews trade for a legit 2C signed long term at an affordable price(IE Hischier or Cozens which obviously was never going to happen), otherwise keeping him was the best choice. Our Defense would be pretty bad without Toews next year tbh.

That said, his next contract is going to be ugly for sure. Might get ~2-3 more years on that contract of top pairing play but I highly doubt we would get even 1 year of him being a Top 15 guy.

Not even close to true

You could actually make a pretty solid argument that him walking would be the best outcome for the Avs lmao.
A top pairing Dman walking is the best outcome? Whaaat?

I get wanting to not re-sign Toews for cap reason etc. However, then you must trade him.

Toews walking will set the the team back quite a bit and the Dcore will no longer be a massive strength. The Avs are built around their top line and superior Dcore.

You keep him as your own rental for a year without having to give up anything. This year is our best chance remaining to win a cup, trading Toews would be a massive blow to those chances.

It's not a bad thing to not sign a soon to be 31 year old to a ~7-8 year deal for $8-9M. Letting him walk and allocating that cap space elsewhere and on younger players would be a fine direction to go.

The best outcome would be having Toews sign a 4-5 year deal for $8M instead of 7-8 but that's also extremely unlikely.
