Having JR as your president or gm is exciting at least. The guy is a gun slinging riverboat gambler. Thought he might slow down a bit with age but no he's still the same crazy dude. Got us two cups though so can't complain.

I thought they traded Miller to make EP happy?? Why would they possibly trade Pettersson now.
He kinda sucks now. He's either permanently damaged or needs a full reset away from Vancouver. They need to trade him before his no movement clause kicks in which will tank his value.

i dunno. if you tell me there will be a trade involving dobson and pettersson then best i can think is maybe dobson and the isles 1st and a prospect and then the 1st is pretraded for a centre.

dobson does not look like a fit for van and in fact he pencils in as mostly likely a 3d paired with mpettersson. i do not see dobson playing a complimentary "feed hughes" role as his linemate and it's a big to be risk assuming that will work.

Dobson is playing behind Tyler Myers now?

Sounds like a 3 way deal to me. I can't see the Canucks really repeating to compete after moving JT and EP40, seem like a heavy retool.

Sabres- Dobson + Barzal
Islanders- EP40 + Boeser
Canucks- Cuzens, Sabres 2025 1st + Quinn

yes, hughes hronek are locked and we have a simple x + y = z formula for the remaining defensive pairings with this ranking formula

x = overall ability
y = neck length
z= overall rating

due to neck length it clearly puts myers ahead of dobson

3d means anchoring the middle pair last time i checked.

i am not advocating it. dobson should be played as a top pair dman. but he's not going to be the 1d in van and he's only going to be the 2d role if he fits with hughes and i am skeptical that happens because dobson is not a complimentary player. hughes just won the norris with hronek and was having a hart like season until he got hurt. why would canucks spend treasure and cap to mess with that?

and that's before you get to the fact dobson is going to want to be paid at a level where he would run a pp1 and he's not doing that either in van.

this rumour really only makes sense if the canucks are flipping dobson somewhere. it would make more sense if we were after mayfield or pulock.

So does that mean Vancouver basically builds around their very good defense (adding Dobson would only help that) and just go gangbusters at forward in free agency?

Interesting idea. For sure any picks Allvin/JR acquire would be flipped too, making this a four team trade.

Lol, why wouldn't we just trade the package that the canucks get, directly to them for EP40 and Boeser? Why would we need a FOURTH puck moving D man?

A downgrade offensively and defensively but Pettersson's contract makes it interesting. If he's not elite anymore you make the trade and flip Dobson ASAP for whatever picks and prospects you can get that has positive value(I bet Dubas gives them his 1st, otherwise Dallas, Edmonton, Nashville, Toronto, St Louis and Buffalo also seem to disregard defense so those are other GMs to prey on). Then you have to spend a few years drafting in the 8-12 range, lose Hughes to UFA, or trade him at the deadline for a couple 1sts, as he heads to the USA and spend a few years drafting top 5 to rebuild the team completely. If Pettersson is still elite you can get much more than Dobson but you have to wait for next year so that he can fix his trade value, which should be negative currently.

It would seem like it.

Hughes-Hronek
MP-Dobson

That’s an incredibly balanced and deep top four.

Forgive my rambling, but Quinn is just such a unique player that all conventional wisdom goes out the window.

He is the best defenseman in world right now, and that does include his defensive play as much as his offense. Not looking for a debate - there's tons of data to support this. My point is, he does not need a bruiser or bodyguard beside him.

A man rocket like Dobson as a partner could honestly be insane.

Hughes loves playing with Hronek, not because he cleans up his mistakes or protects him... far from it. He loves it because he's the only partner he's ever had that can somewhat understand his vision and make complementary plays. As someone who's watched every single game of Quinn Hughes' career, I personally think the ideal partner for Quinn is... the second best offensive Dman in the world.

We're not getting Makar or Fox, but if Dobson has the IQ and pace to match Quinn, learns how to adapt to his style (when to pinch, when to stay back), can feed each other passes along the blueline, get his cannon of a shot off regularly...

He is also a RHD, and those will always have value. If the fit isn't right, that's an easy piece to move. Even after he's re-signed and making $8+.

Yeah having essentially the most expensive d-core in the league when Vancouver currently has good defensive metrics as a team sounds real smart
I agree. Dobson would be a nice player to add, but if you move EP you have to get a comparable forward back, preferably a center. I still think a Barzal/EP swap makes sense.

Why on Earth would Van trade Petterson now? After all the drama wasn't finally pulling off the Miller trade supposed to cement the 'Nucks' commitment to EP. Didn't they basically just make the choice to keep him over JT? I'm confused.

Vancouver is currently those old Minnesota wild teams

Top 3 in Xga
Bottom 3 in Xgf

It’s rare to have that type of contrast
They need offense badly
