Lots of moving pieces for the Pens, especially considering they also shipped players out (Blueger, Kapanen, McGinn) at the TDL.

I think they're a better team, but the one thing that stands out to me is their goaltending.

Jarry had a down year and missed time with injury, and DeSmith struggled (15-16-4, .905) to fill in. Betting on Nedeljkovic to fill in if either of those things happen again feels like needless risk.

(Interestingly, Dubas also signed G Hellberg to a 1-way deal... aka the guy who took over for Nedeljkovic in the NHL, but was just as horrible - .885 SV%).

Say whatever you will... hands were not sat on this summer in Pittsburgh. I'd add Hinostroza to the list as well as he's probably likely to be the extra forward or in every night unless Nylander is finally able to take the step forward.

Three really bad GMs dealing with each other.

Pittsburgh is littered with boat anchors. They're going all in to make Crosby's last two years something special, but they'll just get bounced in the first few rounds.

EVERYBODY LOST on the trades!!!

Anyone have a scouting report on this guy? He seems to have a scoring touch!
Good at everything, great at nothing junior player who is undersized. His scoring is a bit overrated. He was the whole offense for the team and it all ran through him... not actually an indication of his actual offensive ability. His compete is good and he has some flashes that may show some PK and bottom 6 ability... but small frame and only an above average skater. His skating has taken leaps forward over the past 2-3 years, but I'm still not sure it is enough. Will be interesting to see if he can carve out a role in the bottom 6 there and eventually a NHL contract.

So he's Pracey's wet dream, got it. Just needs "character" and he'd have been a 2nd-3rd round pick here for sure back then

Hot take but Graves would be the third best defender on the Avs today.

Girard Byram and Manson ain't better than Graves.
How about Brewer today?

Outside of Karlsson, not a lot of value moving around here... But, so many pieces and retention to work out that it's certainly a pretty significant trade.

EK should help the Penguins get back into the playoffs but I still feel like they're just too old to actually do anything.

Wonder if this starts to get some other deals moving a bit.
Jarry is their starter, Karlsson and Letang trying to play defence in front of him, and Graves in the top 4. That team is going to win or lose games 7-6 and isn't a recipe for long-term success, especially in the playoffs.

You consider 6' 190 lbs undersized???

This is partially correct. He could've gotten back at least a B-level prospect alongside a random midtier 1st round draft pick in a decent yet not amazing draft. Grier also could've gotten somebody more significant back from the Devils in the Meier trade. However, he's gotten a lot of cap space to build the team he wants to build towards, a lot of their junk isn't on terrible deals, got some great prospects in the system, and should be able to swap Hoffman, Lebanc, Duclair, Barabanov, and Simek for draft picks/young players this upcoming trade deadline, and plus the Sharks will be in the bottom 3 getting another great player from the draft.

He's not 6' 190lbs... more like 5'11" 170lbs... maybe 175.

I'm not, but blind yourself with hatred. Karlsson, Smith, Eller, Accari, Graves, and Nieto are all upgrades on what they had by a pretty decent amount. Karlsson, Smith and Graves should be impact players for them.

I do wonder if McFarland is exploring the trade market before circling back on one of the last remaining free agents.

Imo, a guy like Tatar makes a lot of sense, but they may want to see if there’s a cost controlled ‘Colton-lite’ option out there on the trade market before going to the bargain bin of free agency.

I think MacFarland is exploring caddies for his golfing

I’d be for Tatar as long as they know he’s not a playoff solution, just a guy to get you to the deadline.

It would be hard to say not to Tatar's 44 even strength points at ~$2M, but that playoff record...woof.

It's not just the points, look at the shot totals. 43 shots in his last 40 GP? The guy has been a complete non-factor offensively.

Yeah but what did Dubas do in Toronto all those years? Wins one round. Gets fleeced by Sakic in Kadri deal. Just couple of his highlights
I have just heard surface general stuff but from as far as I understand it. Shanahan had a big influence on how that team was shaped. Like I said though that’s just what I remember

Is Kane even eligible for a bonus deal? Why would he be?
Naw...he's currently 34. But...I'm not sure how the rules work, but his birthday is Nov. 19th. So theortically, if he waits and signed until the 20th of November, he'd be 35 and eligible for performance bonuses if it's a one-year deal only.

At least, that's my understanding of the CBA.

I’ve done quite a bit of armchair GM lately and on one I did explore the Kane addition. He’s made over $115 sheets in his career. I think he’d be fine signing a league min for half a year. With the Avs budget, he’s gotta be an option they’ve got written down. Not gonna find many players like him to sign for $1M or less. If healthy;?

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Kane
Nichushkin - Johansen - Rantanen
Wood - Colton - Kovalenko
Cogliano - NotBenMeyers - LOC
