It's really not bad since you get him from age 25 to 33 and the cap should go up significantly in the next 8 years.

He turned 25 a couple of days ago...that's very different than signing an 8 year deal with a 29 or 30 yo. That's similar to Matthew Tkachuk last year.
I mean PLD vs Bo Horvat? It's the same contract.

Yeah...

Girard + 27OA for Lundell.
Oh man please please please

Another factor in the Newhook trade that I didn't think about before now.... The 3C spot actually is wide open as of right now.

Does JTC re-sign or is that the next trade we make?

Imagine if CMac went and got Laughton for #27 + #37 AND got Sharangovich + #58 for #31?

Would you sign ERod @4M to be the 3C?

No. But I would sign JTC

I like Compher quite a bit more then ERod.

Wonder how much room that would leave us?

Still a decent bit. Assuming Shara gets a ~$3M deal. If the plan really is to sign Drouin for cheap yo play on Macks wing, I think it's easily doable. Cheap being like $1M.

My honest and fair expectation is that they chip in here and there. Too many games last year the Avs lost because no one other than MacKinnon/Makar/Rantanen didn't show up. I said it to several other teams' fans heading in to the playoffs that the book was out on them: You shut down those three, you're likely winning the game and series.

And that's what happened.

It's fine to love the team and the players we have, but at some point you have to look at what was constructed last season and realize that it wasn't good. We lost too much depth and there just wasn't much of anything to help the Big Guys out.

You also need to look at more than just points. Malgin probably isn't a great bottom 6 player, neither is Newhook (who is now gone), etc. You need players to fill specific roles and the Avs just didn't have those players last season.

More over, I want the team to win, irrespective of whoever puts on the jersey.
Fair enough.

I want to answer respectfully, but I'm honestly too heartbroken about Alex Newhook right now.

I don't get it. He was an improving 16th overall

HOW was he improving? Seriously, how? I'd argue that he plateaued at the very least if not outright had some regression.

Look--I get it, he seems like a nice guy and all that. I want him to succeed in the NHL, but he didn't fit on this club anymore. NOW, he gets an opportunity to go out and earn a nice paycheck and have a longer career, but he was going to be sorely miscast as a bottom-6 player on this team.

Given the current trades... I don't think either of those players will cost that much.

It's an odd offseason where it's a buyers market by a significant margin. Quite a few teams are tearing it down (Philly, Nashville), re-tooling (Calgary, Winnipeg), accepted that they aren't contenders anymore (Washington, Boston)... there aren't many buyers out there for these depth players.

Most teams are already at the cap. There are obviously some rebuilding teams looking to get better (Ottawa, Columbus, Detroit, etc.) but the Avs have the opportunity to find some very, very good deals.
