This Avs core has atleast another 4-5 years of contention. We have the best D-man in the world, and that’s not going to change anytime soon. Mack and Mikko are both horses who take great care of themselves physically. Early 30’s is not past your prime in hockey. Plenty of teams have won with an “older core”. For everyone that’s doom and gloom about the team this year and going forward, take a look at the Vegas Cup odds for next year and gain some perspective. These are great years to be an Avs fan, don’t take it for granted.
Agreed, I don't know why people always think Nate's game is gonna take a big downward turn as he gets older. Tends to get brought up in these competition window discussions too.
He's a natural athlete, he eats perfectly, trains like Rod the Bod in the off season, and is still a top 3 skater in the NHL at soon to be 28. You'd be hard pressed to find a player that takes care of himself better. He's more likely to still be effective in his 30's than not.
Look at Stamkos who's built similar, and plays a similar speed based, shoot first game. He's still a ppg+ player at 33. He just had a 106 point season a couple years ago at 32. Crosby is also a ppg+ player at soon to be 36 and does the same training regimen as Nate.
Mikko I can also see aging well. He seemed more committed to taking care of himself this year. Got an all business buzz cut to start the season. Cut out the chocolates and seems more committed to his diet. We saw the results of all that with his career year. Seemed to have more energy to play at a high level every night than before.
If Mikko keeps that same approach, the Avs could perhaps keep the AAV reasonable with another 6-7 year deal, taking him to 34-35, and Mikko could still play at a high level like Malkin who's built similar, plays a similar style game, and is still a ppg player at 36.
Building around MacK/Mikko/Makar is very similar to the Pens building around Crosby/Malkin/Letang, or Tampa building around Stamkos/Kucherov/Hedman, and the Pens and Bolts are in the mix with a chance to win pretty much every year despite an older roster.
