FYI - UDFA F was in NYR Rookie Camp, had a goal vs Flyers in rookie game

I wonder if the Rangers will sign him due to lack of depth at centers. He seems to have some potential

It looks like we are going to be very thin this year in terms of players in the WJC.

Perreault should make the team. Fortescue might, hard to say. Sykora will if the Rangers release him, but I doubt they release him.

More than likely, Perreault will be the only one.
Sykora will 100% be released for a couple weeks to play in the WJC.

That 2 week tournament of huge games would be MUCH more beneficial to him than 4-5 AHL games in Dec-Jan.

Nemec from the Devils will likely be released from the AHL as well for a couple weeks.

You're probably right. I was thinking we had a habit of not letting kids go to the WJC when playing in the AHL, but looking back, I think that was only Grachev.

Hopefully Sykora's time in the AHL will serve him well at the tournament.

Fortescue also probably has a pretty good chance of making it.

I hope so, but I've seen a lot of people not including him in their lineup projections. Was he in the summer showcase? I can't remember.
He was so his performance as a college freshman after graduating from as part of one of the better US National Program classes’ has definitely been on the radar.

I want what I want
Being #2 to Celebrini among freshmen (and I'm still baffled at a HS senior aged player doing what he's doing) and top 10 nationally after going 23rd overall just screams really dumb shit happening before the Rangers picked.

Hopefully the Rangers don't undo the stupidity of the teams in front of them by trying to get him to sign this year. Let him cook at BC for 2024-25 and reassess after that.
Yeah, I too have been watching BC's games and while he's looked really good for a freshman he definitely has some things to work on and nobody should get too ahead of themselves as I think at the very least a sophomore season would be in his/the NYR's best interest.

I think his skating has been fine, he's shown enough speed coming in on the rush and also backchecking. I think people get lulled into thinking its a problem because he likes to slow the game down at points but does so as (like Fox/Panarin) to draw defenders to him and open up passing lanes. His passing and offensive awareness is very very high quality. On defense, his stick work is pretty good and he is relentless with using his stick to recover pucks. He'll even throw the occasional check or two. Like has been mentioned, he has to work on his strength (he's easily knocked off the puck) and his defensive positioning at times but both things expected as an undersized freshman.

Also, just have to say, points aren't everything. Will Smith has one less point than Gabe and I think he's looked considerably worse. He definitely can dangle and has the requisite skill but tries to do too much and makes some boneheaded plays in both the O and D zone. Again, he's another college freshman so no worries but it can show how simple stat watching itself doesn't tell the whole story.

Also Fortescue has looked really solid. Good positioning and nice first pass and good zone exits.

Thanks for the detailed update. It's critical to hit on these later first round picks if we want to keep the window open.

These big fallers in the first round seemingly wihtout much justification are always the players that I wish the Rangers would grab (ala Tarasenko in his draft year) and they tend to buy into the whole, the other teams must know something. I am so glad that the Rangers smartly grabbed the player that ten other teams should have likely drafted and improved their position significantly.

According to the Athletic the Rangers prospects miss World Juniors in totality...though this was written back in August by Pronman and I'm sure that Perrault's success so far this season would help him bump one of the others. Perhaps the same could be true for Fortescue. Sykora I would imagine would be released and a central member of the Slovakia unit.

McGroarty is likely going to miss the tournament as he was hurt pretty badly over the weekend and yeah, this shits pretty outdated.

Stramel shouldn't sniff the team even though he was on it last year. He's awful. I'd be shocked if they don't keep the BC line together. They already have that built in chemistry and that is a massive advantage in a short tournament like this where everyone else is scrambling to find shit that works.

Not to mention he’s earned a spot on merit alone.

You have no f***ing idea how happy I was when Bill Guerin did us the favor by taking him at 21. Luckily we know that Perreault was really high on their list and would've been the pick regardless, but I didn't want there to be any chance for Drury to have that option.

I think Brindley would have been the pick had Perreault not been there.

Stramel is so bad. Gabe has almost as many points in his last 4 games as Stramel does in 40(!) career games at the NCAA level.

On Sykora I would guess he'd be on the Slovak team though I don't necessarily think it's a sure thing. He's a regular in Hartford's lineup though it's not like there aren't extras but it'll be a month anyway probably more away from the Pack.

The usual with the US team if a player played last year and is still eligible they'll be on the team again. A lot depends on the coaching staff which unlike some other teams seems to change every year. Last year the Quinnipiac coach if I remember and he went with a very small puck moving defense. Fortescue is more average size and not really a top end puck mover.....more of a plain defender or at least that's my read so far. He's probably got some shot but I'm not expecting him. Right now I'd think Perreault and Sykora are probables. Maybe BMB could sneak in. Fortescue a long shot.
