Yeah, it could go in a crisis management textbook for what not to do.Also doesn't make United look any better.
"Yea we knew the dude was in a toxic long term relationship and had numerous red flags in his past, but he kicks the ball good so we ignored it" isn't exactly a great defense of how they handled it the last few weeks.
Obviously this was much lower stakes, but when Chelsea announced Stake as a shirt sponsor and there was immediate backlash, they immediately killed those plans and moved on from them. That's what United should've done after those initial leaks. Just say it was part of a comprehensive plan of multiple options, and then just commit to him not returning and how you're sorry for any miscommunication in thinking that he was potentially returning. Deep down, they are annoyed that he isn't returning.
