Where would Tarasenko fall in this comparison? I think that’s what we can reasonably expect from Kyrou. Scoring, some brilliant flashes, and not really ever “the guy” in the way that the very elite guys are. Kyrou seems on his way to be at the Tarasenko level.

I’d like to see more competitiveness from him, or a higher gear and confidence when the chips are down.

From an on-ice perspective, they are probably similarly valued players although with different skill sets. Obviously Tarasenko played a sturdier game and had a better shot, but Kyrou probably has better hands and is faster and more slippery to defend. But in the end both are +/- 35g/75p guys when they are on their game.

However, I don't think that Kyrou has the same mentality Vladi has. We can see how intense Tarasenko is and how it seems like the only things he cares about is winning. He got pissed off when he or the team wasn't playing well and had that mental edge that I haven't seen from Kyrou yet. Then again, it's hard to see what a player is truly made of when he's mostly playing meaningless regular season games. Kyrou's personality seems way more blase and casual compared to Vladi.

Kyrou loves to win.
Tarasenko hates to lose.

That's the difference right there.

Why would we call him up to trade him to the Islanders? If this presages a deal, I think it is more along the lines of moving a forward currently on the roster for cap and not getting one back. So like moving Kapanen in a deal for Hanafin.

Most likely, we just had some injuries, so a roster spot opened. The team wanted to give him a cup of coffee to see the NHL, get an NHL paycheck, and see what it takes to be a NHLer.
That's certainly more likely. Just hungry for some TDL action and it's fun to imagine the what-ifs.

Not everything needs to be taken so seriously. Seems like a boring existence.

I don't mind what-ifs but find it more fun to find realistic what could actually be. I read a good bit of fantasy books. But I prefer the hard magic systems that have rules clearly defined at the outset as opposed to soft where the wizard waves his wand and whatever the author need to happen does.

Besides, how am I supposed to know it was "imagine if" when you said "I wonder if". Man must be such a frustrating existence to be friends with someone who expects you to understand what they mean, not what they say.

Do you think the Blues have a better chance of drafting 10th or making the playoffs?

Of those two options, definitely making the playoffs. I think making the playoffs vs missing the playoffs is like a 50/50 at this point. But picking 10th is like a 10-15% chance, because I think we can realistically end up picking anywhere from 9th overall to 16th overall (barring a lottery win).

Blues are only 3 points away from 9th and a difficult remaining schedule. I think 10th is a real possibility.

Really depends on how many teams around us sell major pieces around us and continue to fall in the standings, and what we do. Then again, those teams could get their Vrana and Blais and f*** up their tank.

Devils advocate: last year we sold and we seemed to do better (not sure of the actual stats, so I may be wrong). So even if teams sell, they may not be guaranteed to be worse (fully admitting that I believe it would be more likely).

Yep, that's what I mean by the Flames could get their version of Blais and Vrana and magically win a bunch of games.

Saad had his jersey retired tonight by Saginaw, where he played junior. Only 2nd number they have retired (Trochek was first). Nice honor for him. If only he were still active..

Blues stats, by player, since Bannister took over.

Skaters: NHL Stats

Goalies: NHL Stats

This is a 1-unit team + goaltending, carrying the hell out of everyone else.
This is what I've been saying for awhile now. This team has been 100% carried by goaltending since Bannister took over. That, and Thomas playing like a stud. Outside of Binner/Thomas, our team has been pretty meh.

I’m coming around to the idea of moving Buchnevich for futures that we can flip at the deadline or before the draft for a long term solution at LD, in part because of how it would almost certainly help our draft position. If we send him somewhere that may not be able to extend him, there is always the possibility that we can bring him back in the summer of 2025 as a free agent if the price and term are reasonable.

We are currently at 5 games over the NHL .500 mark. Buffalo is the first team below the .500 mark and if the draft cutoff was today they would be picking 8th. That is a realistic finish with this roster minus Buchnevich. Give Bolduc or Neighbours some time at 1LW with Thomas and Kyrou and put the other with Schenn and Saad. When Snuggeruud is ready to sign, bring him into the Top 9 as well and see what he can do. Move Kapanen at the TDL for whatever you can get. With the cap increases and roster flexibility, I think it is reasonable that we can add the pieces we need and develop the youngsters to the point where we can start competing in the West as soon as the 2025-26 season.

I appreciate this team fighting and scrapping for a playoff spot. That's the right mentality, and the coaching staff has done a hell of a job getting them mentally tougher. Armstrong has a tough job where he needs to be a seller, but should also reward the team for what they've accomplished.

I could totally see a scenario where he:
trades Buchnevich, Saad, whoever can get a return worthwhile.

Makes a token acquisition at the deadline for a rental player that doesn't necessarily move the needle, but is a nod toward the fact that this team is still fighting for a playoff spot. Something similar to renting Perron for a late pick (although Detroit should not be selling, and Perron holds little value) but something about as vanilla as that type of move. People will make jokes about it being an ineffective move, but I think its also psychologically significant. And it would still have some impact on the locker room as they fight for that 8th spot down the stretch.

Since JR posted that he thought the team would keep Buchnevich, I'm pretty sure he's getting traded now.
