Honestly from all of what I seen(not as much as I would like) he just looks like a very reliable dman, nothing flashy but will make disrupt plays defensively and make strong breakout passes. Not the sexiest pick ever, it does not look like he has superstar potential but this may be my favourite pick of our draft. Reliable smart player at a premium position and is already playing meaningful minutes in the 2nd or 3rd best league in the world.

Larionov's Torpedo was the most fun team to watch in the last KHL season and Konyushkov's ice time grew over the course of the year. Him and Fedotov were their top D-men, both young. Konyushkov is the best passer but apparently does not have a good shot.

In one interview he mentioned that his role model is Kobe Bryant, because 'he was not afraid of anyone and could score even if he had a broken finger or hand'. He is aware that Kobe 'was selfish and sometimes refused to pass to his teammates' and a young Russian has not figured out this controversy for himself as of yet. Among fellow blueliners, he 'sometimes watching Voynov games'.

I somehow suspect this guy might've been kind of a part-time scout for the Habs in Russia this season:

He writes a weekly column in DansLesCoulisses (answering questions from the public) mostly from his KHL coaching experience. Can’t say I’m a big fan but he does have a unique perspective on things compared to the usual Habs blog platitudes.

I can’t find the video but in an RDS article the writer quotes Lapointe saying: “I played with Larionov so I called him to inquire about this player, he told me he was one of his smartest D with good upside and a good kid also”.

N.B. I find listening to Lapointe answering questions more cringe than Carey’s deer in the headlights moment..

Same team as Konyushkov and from Montreal, would be rather likely that they reached out to him somehow.

Konyushkov isn't much of a highlight-generating player, but here's a bit of something:

Looks pretty tall...

Wasted pick. But hey, we draft for needs...I wonder what needs he'll fill in Russia....

So you wouldn't draft a Russian with 3 years on his contract in Russia?
At 18. Sure. At 20 turning 21 before the end of the year, no. Unless you are talking about a potential Kaprizov.

Idea here is that the guy was a Right d-man. Tell me it wasn't a draft for need. What need will we have if he ever comes in 4 years.

Might as well have drafted another Euro goalie at that spot. Draft Urban.

Yes, they drafted for need. They selected a guy who plays 20+ minutes at 20-years old in the KHL. At 20, he had 25 pts. Similar production to 1st round pick Mukhamadulin, who also had 25 pts as a 20 year old in the KHL.
Why wasn't he pick earlier then? Who doesn't make a player who is at pair with a 1st rounder an earlier choice than a 4th rounder?

In the end, you become a UFA at 27 years old. And the earliest he could join in will be at 24 years old.

Does it really matter if he was picked in the 4th round and not earlier? Canadiens picked him with their fourth pick of the draft.
Maxim Fedotov has the same ratio as a U21 and wasnt picked. Point is that you are talking about stats solely comparing him to a 1st rounder. Fine. He had fine stats. But it doesn,t tell the whole story. And now, at best, we will see him at 24 years old. 3 years before UFa period.

Point is that the pick would have been better served elsewhere.

I didn't only point to stats. I also pointed to the heavy minutes he logs. Larionov uses him a lot. That's not common for a 20-year old in the KHL.

No way that was a draft for need, at least not for the current need, I mean Konyushkov just had a debut KHL season, and even though it was a very impressive debut, it might be that he will now have a sophomore slump and everybody will be like 'oh welp'.

5th overall pick - 4th round pick = Same thing, same value
Geez guys, I know you are mad about not picking Michkov......don't need to turn your brains off to invent stuff to fit the narrative
The value in Bogdan whatshisname isnt the same at Michkov either, so it checks out.
