WC: 2022 Women's World Championships

More drama in team Finland!
Iltasanomat is reporting that Meeri Räisänen has been dropped out of Finland's lineup. Räisänen made a tweet that was apparently making fun of the Susanna Tapani case (Tapani left for a friend's wedding in the middle of the tournament). Apparently several players on team Finland felt that Räisänen was making fun of Finland's management and Susanna Tapani. Finland's GM Tuula Puputti denies Räisänen being dropped out of lineup.

This tournament is a joke. They should bring back European Championship. Let Canada and USA have their own super series, they are the only nations who are full professionals. Finland doesn´t even try that.

Yeah, we should just cancel this tournament because Finland isn't good enough to win it yet, makes about as much sense as the argument sometimes parroted around here about doing away with teams like Latvia at the WJC and WHC because of the same reason.

I mean, if Finland can't win it, what's the point? The hockey world revolves around nothing but seeing it's glory.

My takeaway from a select few NHL fans is that they should cancel hockey in Europe. Have a super series between Canada and america every 2 years between the ladies and the men. That's it. No point in playing other games. Cancel the world's .. make the U20 at xmas at 7 game series between us and Canada too. Same with U18 and same with Hlinka.

This is the stuff I keep reading around here.lol

I see that from only a very few select posters, like 4-5. there are a few who want both (super series and oly/WC)

There is in my experience around here way more European posters who want only a best on best olympics, a NHL run WC just won't do, not acceptable to them, they are very numerous and vocal on HF.

I'm torn on both... Eg. I think the Olympic best on best is the best format. However... Watching games in non hockey countries airing at 4am really sucks! Last few Olympics fell into some crazy time zones and were very hard to watch.

I'm o.k with either as long as the fans aren't bitching to be honest.

My grand vision is a proper WC with both IIHF and NHL refs and in rotating venues between Europe and N.A. I've wanted that for a few decades now, I will blame the N.H.L for this, they have no vision. They don't understand the growth they can give to the game by doing this and what a boon it would be to hockey by building up and establishing a tradition like this for the sport.

They're blind to it all, it's frustrating.

Team Finland has been having some unusually loud public moments recently. They didn't take Noora Raty with them to the Olympics despite there being no discernable drop in her play & saying she won't be there because if she's not the starter what's the point. Now this incident with Raisanen. When it comes to Susanna Tapani this isn't new news. She's forgone entire Women's World's to do ringette instead. This is just who Tapani is just like Casey Mittelstadt decided to play High School hockey instead of the USHL in his draft year. Athletes do this. Ottawa still has misgivings towards Hasek deciding not to play in the playoffs.

Hockey Canada and USA Hockey benefit financially from the NHL. Does anyone know if other nations hockey organisations receive money from the NHL?

I'm glad the mens program there didn't take this advice or they wouldn't be in the halcyon era of Finnish hockey they currently find themselves in.

I don't know if this particular poster or most of the posters from Finland here are in their 20's or what but I'm 52 and let me assure you I remember the days very well when the Finns were nothing, they were just some team from Europe that played hockey but that Canada, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union beat up on, you knew you were never going to lose to them if you just showed up and half tried. But they kept developing and playing against the best teams and look at them now.................whole new world. You don't do that by throwing your hands up in the air and saying........"we're not good enough, we're outta here!!"

And as it is they are still clearly the 3rd best team in womens hockey, give them some more time and they will start winning these things.

But there was elitism in that post too, a sense of "hey, we're big shots now in mens hockey, and this womens stuff, who cares?"

Theres a lot of that coming out of a lot of their fans the last 5 or so years. I suppose I'll be taken to task for this but I'm gonna say it, they are on the level of Canadian fans there now. I've witnessed the most absurd and bloated sense of self importance out of so many of them of late.

I just want some best on best strung in a row for a decade or so... kind of like 1998 to 2014... that was great!

I'm not sure it'll ever happen given the people involved though.

I'm not disagreeing but how do hockey Canada and us benefit financially from the NHL?
USA Hockey's 2021 financial statement claims that they started receiving an annual grant of $1.2M from the NHL in 2015. Total expenses were about $44M, so the NHL's contribution is about 2.7% - helpful, but not exactly extravagant support.

From Hockey Canada's 2021 statement, all I could find was a $220K donation to the First Shift program for new-to-hockey families provided by the NHL and NHLPA.

Fairly certain my internet sleuthing is far from thorough, but it's far superior to my auditing skills. Maybe someone with knowledge of the inner workings of those organizations can provide more useful insight.

I guess you refer to my post. If it is so, I have to comment on this. I didnt mean it that way, no. I dont actually consider Finland as a some kind of big shot at mens level(I hate that elitism among fans), and even if I did, it has nothing to do with my attitude towards this current tournament. My frustration is actually caused by our amateurish womens national team with all their scandals recently. My post was written in frustration so it came up kind of short. Maybe just keep the tournament the way it is.

I dont remember those old days when our senior team was nothing, but I remember those countless disappointments, final losses, quarter final losses etc. I have to say Im happy that things are a bit better now. But our womens team have been third(or fourth) as long as I can remember, for 30 years now and no progress seems to happen. Maybe in the future but right now things aren´t looking good.

Reading what @Lartsaman wrote and then reading this, feels like you're projecting here.
