What a game with so much happening.
Canada were pretty dominant in the first 2 periods outside of the end of the first where they turned the puck over a bunch. I don't understand what they were doing just standing still with the puck instead of trying to make quick breakouts, it's like they couldn't learn that Finland were just gonna keep swarming so it was either get it the heck out or turn it over. If you're gonna turn it over at least turn it over past your own blue line.
The next thing that comes to mind is the powerplay which honestly cost them the game except for the miracle that happened and saved the gold medal. The powerplay wasn't a total mess, they did have possession a lot in the offensive zone but there wasn't enough variety, they really wanted that McTavish side one-timer to work. They made almost no attempt to do a cross ice seem pass to the goal, I know that was a tough play with Finland's PK but still you have to mix it up a bit and try other things sometimes. McTavish took it to the net and it didn't work but it was nice that he showed something different, I like that about him that he can do a lot of different things well. The Bedard in the bumper spot should have been changed, I don't get why they didn't have Bedard and Stankoven switched. Front of the net gritty offense seems like it suits Stankoven a bit more and Bedard has a better shot but had almost no opportunities to use it in the bumper.
The 3rd period felt like trouble after yet another PP that didn't score and you could see they weren't playing as aggressively. After Finland scored I thought ok this needs to snap them out of sitting back, but it didn't and when they kept sitting back after the 1st Finland goal it just felt inevitable that Finland were going to tie it up. It has to be some of the worst coaching I can possibly imagine, they had near total control of the game playing aggressive. You could scour the earth and you couldn't find one person that thinks this Canada team had good defensive zone coverage. How the coach could possibly think that this team(that's all but blowing the doors off offensively) needs to go turtle mode to nurse home a 1 goal lead with over half the 3rd period to go is hard to fathom.
In the end those 3 periods got us that wild OT and that OT was legendary so all's well that ends well.
Kent Johnson and Mason McTavish deciding to play in this tournament completely changed how it played out. Because of them Canada had an offensive level that was a step above every other team. It seems like it's been a while since this tournament felt like that.
