GDT: 2022 WJC Gold Medal Game FIN vs CAN 6pm MT, 8pm ET 2022-08-20

Just 5 months wait. That's all.

Too bad that Finland's coaches will change for the next tournament. I liked our current coaching. Pennanen who was the head coach now is in the future Finland's national men's team's head coach, I'm almost sure about that. He could be the next one right after the already legendary Jukka Jalonen on that job. In fact Pennanen would already be on that job if Jukka Jalonen had gone to NHL this summer.

Still on cloud nine after that game. Easily one of the best hockey games and sporting moments I have attended in my life.

The intensity of the OT was just absolutely mind boggling.

I will have McTavish batting the puck down, hacking away to clear it, and saving the gold etched in my mind for a long, long time.

Gutty f***ing effort from both sides tonight and both countries should hold their heads up high with the energy and passion they played with in this GMG. Kudos Finland.

Go Canada Go.

I dont understand the whining here? The two best team competed in the gold medal game and it was a fantastic show. Finland came back from a 0-2 afte 5 PK:s to even the game. The overtime goal by Canada came after a superb clearence on Canadas goalline by MacTavish. This ws a classic. I`m proud of Finland for the comeback, but I still congratulate Canada for the win. This was a CLASSIC for ages. Stop the whining and for once enjoy a good show!

We were so close to winning.. literally centimeters away.. Cngrats Canada but I'm sad

We'll get gold again latest next spring at men's home tournament. All of this disappointment is forgotten then latest.

The rate that these golds are coming to Finland at the moment is insane. It would be a surprise to me if Finland didn't win any golds in the next calendar year. I got a lot of faith in that, because of our coaching advantage on many different levels, juniors and mens. Very often Finland has the best coaching of these tournaments.

Well said.

That was amazing. I have watched the McT save 100 times and I cannot believe it stayed out - it doesn't seem possible.
What is a bit frustrating on that is that instead of whacking the puck with his stick to ensure the goal, Niemelä starts celebrating the goal that never happens.

Incredible save my McTavish, but 1-2 whacks to the stick/puck by Niemelä and even that would have been in vain.

As a Finn I don't have anything against the refereeing. I would've probably called even couple more minors :D. I just hate hooking/clutching..

We should be proud of the way the team stepped up in the latter half of the match despite the discipline problems (actually I think Canada's material is better which leads easily to such penalties). In the end it was VERY close. Literally centimeters.

Congrats to Canada. Lots of good boys in your team. McT obviously MVP of this tournament!

I didn't see Finnish newswriters being cocky after that Sweden win.

We known for years that Finland are on a roll and Sweden are standing still. Bad coaches and player development thats on reverse. No realy super high talent among forwards(Forsbergc, Sundin etc.)

Does not meen thats we are disgusted that it is going well for Finland. And especialy not in this tournament, we have been crap here for ages. Eklund, Raymond and Holtz might made a difference, or not.
The big picture concern is bigger then Finland being better at the moment.

But we've been told Canada is so far above everyone else that their squad should be split into three teams to make the tournament better :sarcasm:

Congrats to Canada - their one and only team.

And kudos to Finland.
You do realise the talent this roster is missing? This is the B or C team...

I had a feeling that Canada would do the winning goal on that play before a stop of play before they would be able to check if that Finland's goal was a goal or not. Finnish players seemed to be confused for a while of that situation and Canada capitalized on it. Finnish players just should've kept playing normally and not let that affect them. I also thought that it was a goal by Finland at first, but clearly it wasn't.

Canadians don't need any Russian rivalry anymore when Finland can perform this well against Canada in the finals on many different levels. There is Canada & USA rivalry and undeniably Canada vs Finland rivalry as well. Canada and Finland finals seem to happen all the time nowadays and they aren't one sided games anymore.
Finland still losing (twice) when you consider the Canadian players not on this roster does not bode well for Finland in this rivalry.

Canada was missing it's 40+ best players? Okay then.
With the players missing Canada could two better teams or one monster team.

What a game with so much happening.

Canada were pretty dominant in the first 2 periods outside of the end of the first where they turned the puck over a bunch. I don't understand what they were doing just standing still with the puck instead of trying to make quick breakouts, it's like they couldn't learn that Finland were just gonna keep swarming so it was either get it the heck out or turn it over. If you're gonna turn it over at least turn it over past your own blue line.

The next thing that comes to mind is the powerplay which honestly cost them the game except for the miracle that happened and saved the gold medal. The powerplay wasn't a total mess, they did have possession a lot in the offensive zone but there wasn't enough variety, they really wanted that McTavish side one-timer to work. They made almost no attempt to do a cross ice seem pass to the goal, I know that was a tough play with Finland's PK but still you have to mix it up a bit and try other things sometimes. McTavish took it to the net and it didn't work but it was nice that he showed something different, I like that about him that he can do a lot of different things well. The Bedard in the bumper spot should have been changed, I don't get why they didn't have Bedard and Stankoven switched. Front of the net gritty offense seems like it suits Stankoven a bit more and Bedard has a better shot but had almost no opportunities to use it in the bumper.

The 3rd period felt like trouble after yet another PP that didn't score and you could see they weren't playing as aggressively. After Finland scored I thought ok this needs to snap them out of sitting back, but it didn't and when they kept sitting back after the 1st Finland goal it just felt inevitable that Finland were going to tie it up. It has to be some of the worst coaching I can possibly imagine, they had near total control of the game playing aggressive. You could scour the earth and you couldn't find one person that thinks this Canada team had good defensive zone coverage. How the coach could possibly think that this team(that's all but blowing the doors off offensively) needs to go turtle mode to nurse home a 1 goal lead with over half the 3rd period to go is hard to fathom.

In the end those 3 periods got us that wild OT and that OT was legendary so all's well that ends well.

Kent Johnson and Mason McTavish deciding to play in this tournament completely changed how it played out. Because of them Canada had an offensive level that was a step above every other team. It seems like it's been a while since this tournament felt like that.

With the players missing Canada could two better teams or one monster team.

I'd say you are exaggerating. Of course Canada is missing players. Every team in the tournament is, but Canada has the depth to overcome it better than anyone else, so I don't pity you at all. For a team like Slovakia however, missing the players they are missing, is the differance between competing for bronze and staying in the top division (luckily for them no relegation this year).

My first post was in reference to threads being made on how half the teams currently in the tournament should be exluded, one which suggested that Canada should be split into three teams (OHL, WHL and QMJHL). I've already argued why that is a gimmick and a cheat, so I'm not gonna get into that again.

But this final alone shows why it's a bad idea even from a competitive standpoint. Because, as you say, Canada are missing players. That's not going to change just because your national team is split in three. It would be the B teams of Canada OHL, Canada WHL and Canada QMJHL, not the A teams.

That is why I was congratulating Canada's "one and only team", as I think Canada should remain in it's current form and "only" be allowed one team in the tournament going forward. It wasn't to make mockery of Canada missing or not missing any players.

Absolute fact is that you've been able to win 4/10 of the last U-20 tournaments with 10 times more hockey players than any other country, so no wonder you're feeling high now.

Not quite - Canada has 345k registered hockey players, Finland 65k. Canada's superiority would be more felt in its depth. If every country could put up several teams, Canada's B and C teams would likely dominate.
