During that offseason, he was dealt to Chicago in a four-player trade.

“I was sour for a little bit,” de Haan said, “especially with what I played through in the playoffs. I thought I was a big part of that run.”

Time, it seems, heals all wounds.

The 31-year-old de Haan thought he’d land a contract in the offseason. When he didn’t, he scoped out the Stanley Cup contenders, shook off any remaining resentment and returned to Raleigh on a professional tryout.

“At the end of the day, it’s a business."
And on Dzingel

Hurricanes strength and conditioning coach Bill Burniston called Dzingel and urged him to come and battle for a roster spot in Carolina. Dzingel talked to the team and signed a one-year, two-way contract on July 25.

“I woke up four hours later with a huge spider bite and my elbow the size of a watermelon,” he said. “I was rushed to the ER.”

Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with his elbow — a spider bite or perhaps a piece or rust that got under his skin.

Dzingel, arm engorged and bent at the elbow, received weeks of treatment and waited for improvement, but he was limited to training on the bike.

Martinook isn't a Rod thing. It's a management thing. While not by stature necessarily, Aho and Teravainen are small as a duo. Every coach in the league would want some size and/or jam to balance things out. The bench hasn't been deep in that regard. The Middle 6 gets thin when Svechnikov fills that role; the team has needed him to be a line driver.

They've tried to address this at various points. Ferland was brought in a year away from UFA for a reason. They were close on Marchment. They tried for Tkachuk. Unless Jarvis or Necas takes a step to free Svech from that responsibility, I expect them to continue to hunt for that presence.

I miss having a guy like Ferland on the team. Man I loved him in that Wsh series too....even if the refs did him dirty.

Hope he is doing well after hockey.

TT-Aho-Jarvis is a great 1st half of the regular season line. As things start to tighten up and get more physical, I worry about that line taking a beating.

Eventually everyone comes around to team ##grit.

I think you guys are knocking kase a little by assuming he might have a transient role on this team. I really feel like he's going to surprise us with a big year. he's been in a lot of weird situations and injury trouble, but you know how players have a tendency to get right here because of the culture and the less intense media.
At one point in his career, I thought I read that he was pretty speedy. I also read that one of the reasons that he's had his concussion issues is that he's not afraid to body it up and play hard down low. He's not particularly big, but is "scrappy". Hopefully, he can still be a bit of that while protecting himself. If he is indeed a faster guy, I could easily see him having a larger impact.
Bold strategy...get bit by radioactive spider, become super swole, and revive your career. Also pursue hot redheads and a life of crimefighting on the side.

Just your friendly neighborhood Dzingleberry.

...maybe don't pursue the redheads especially if they are employed by the team.

Prefer Staal as 2c

The designation of 2c vs. 3c is pretty irrelevant in Carolina. The role they play is what's important. For instance, last year, Aho was 1C, Trocheck 2C and Staal 3C, but at Even Strength, their TOI / Game was:
Aho: 14:05
Staal: 13:43
Trocheck: 13:14

On the Power Play:
Aho: 2:58
Trocheck: 2:53
Staal: 0:42

On the PK
Staal: 2:13
Aho: 1:54
Trocheck: 1:46

I suspect we'll see something similar this year where Staal will get similar ES toi, minimal PP toi and the most PK toi.
