We aren't a dysfunctional org anymore. It's shocking to us and maybe even to some of the team but they are pros. They know Marty won't exactly be dumpster diving and is still well taken care of regardless of what happens. It's part of the job.
Agreed, I just hope they gave him a heads up. You hear of players after retirement talk of respect for certain GMs and hatred for others, mostly based on the little things like telling a player actually where they stand with the team. I think of the trading Pena scene from Moneyball.

I'm flabbergasted. My first thought is Rod and Waddell got into a screaming match and this is Waddell's way of "going nuclear" on Rod.

This is one of those things where the culture of the team matters more than Martinook's cap hit. I hope they talked it over with Jordan Martinook's camp and soothed the way for this move. This coming as a surprise could really sour the locker room right before season starts. I sincerely doubt he will be claimed or they would have just traded him for future considerations or something.
I disagree with this totally. Players know the deal, it's a business. Plus players also know Martinook is nothing more than a cheerleader at this point in his career. As far as on-ice contribution? It's a zero, if not a net negative.

Don is to smart to get into a sreaming match or even a fight of any kind with Rod. What probably happened is Rod kept taking his apples out of office fridge. After repeatedly asking him to stop he figured this was his best revenge!

He's still a NHL player but nowhere near worth his salary. He's overpaid like 2x. He should be a league minimum guy.
This. He and Bear are the worst contracts on the team and the only bad ones, LTIRetire not included. I hope he gets claimed, but no one is taking that contract.

Marty going nowhere…. We have a numbers issue and need to get our payroll as close to salary cap ,as as possible with 23 players when we realistically have 24 including stepan…. So paper transactions and trying to manipulate things to get max cap relief for Gards going on LTIR and then immediately guys are back on the roster and even possibly playing opening night…

they put Marty on waivers instead of Chatfield or someone else as we expect no one would claim, arty but would claim the others…. So maximizing ltIR relief and protecting from losing players to waivers we want to keep….

no way we are really trying to waive and send Marty down or expect to lose him…. Could happen but highly unlikely…

Would expect this clears way for Stepan to be signed and then after game 1 Gards goes into LTIRetirement and Marty is back on the roster. It's a hell of a lot more likely that someone would claim Noesen than Marty Party at this point.
doesnt work. we are 4.4 million over the cap ceiling now.

Minus Gardiner on LTIR. 350k over the ceiling. Add in Stepan's min salary contract and we are 1.1 million over. So we have to waive Martinook to get under the cap by ~25k.

Exactly this. I think they're still playing a game of chicken on a possible Bear trade seeing what they can get for him. But in the meantime they need someone to go on waivers so that they're cap compliant at the start of the season. Marty is the highest salaried guy that's likely for that give that Bear is still trade bait. By game 2 Marty's back on the roster.

yep, mis-calculated by a hair, probably going to do one or two more paper transactions before then I'd think to make it work.

I don't get the posts about a paper transaction to sign Stepan and having him come right back when the season starts. Isn't there a roster limit of 23 players?

WITHOUT Gardiner, Pacioretty and Stepan, Carolina is at 23 players on the active roster:

F: Aho, Jarvis, TT, Svech, KK, Necas, Kase, Staal, Fast, Martinook, Stastny, Drury, Noesen: 13
D: Slavin, Burns, Skjei, Pesce, CDH, Coghlan, Chatfield, Bear: 8
G: Andersen, Raanta

So if they sign Stepan, someone needs to be sent down or moved. Unless I don't understand how this works, if they waive him an send him down, they can't sign Stepan and just "bring him back" when the season starts or they'll be over the 23 man limit.

Unless they trade Bear of course, but that's the point. If the plan is to both sign Stepan and to have Martinook on the roster come opening night, someone still has to be moved.

EDIT: if that's what you are all assuming will happen (bear or someone moved first), then I do get it.

Coghlan on IR retroactive to last week…. Opens another roster spot…. Pesce on IR retroactive….

it’s temporary but it only has to be temporary until others make their final roster decisions and then you make the risk on whom to send down when everyone healthy….

if Marty not going to play for 4 or 5 games while we evaluate Drury or noesen a bit more anyways, then him clearing waivers but sitting in press box since it is a paper transaction, still gets his full 1 way salary no matter what…. So no harm no foul other than we can’t play him without emergency injury recall paper transaction as well and play the system and manipulate it to our benefit…..

as long as TD willing to pay the money, there are many shenanigans we can do with the roster to keep more than 23 people sitting with big club…. But the big deadline forcing our hand right now is compliance and LTIR cap relief on day 1 of season… after that hurdle lots of funny business and options open up for us to have more than 23 on roster for game 1 we play….

You're right. I think the Noesen and/or Bear thing is the elephant in the room. Probably mostly the Bear thing.

This is cap maneuvering, pure and simple. Our maneuver is to be seen I guess.

I'm very confused about LTIR. Why not put Pacioretty on LTIR too? Doesn't that maximize the LTIR pool?

Edit: Also, with Chatfield and Noesen having 2nd years (plus Noeson's $500K minimum salary), they are both also unlikely to be snagged if they get waived.

So Coghlan is on the team it seems

In my NHL ‘23 world, the only thing I’d do with those 2 units would be to swap Stastny from the 2nd group to be the net front on the 1st group and Kase down to the 2nd group for the same reason.

But, as long as RBA gives them equal starts, I get the reasoning with keeping Stastny off the first unit.

Kase on PP1 is…Interesting… I have zero hopes he’ll stay healthy for any sustained amount of time so that’ll likely change, but I will say PP2 looks really solid. Hope they all mesh together well. Looked great in preseason obviously, but, it’s preseason…

Who is going to provide a net front presence on PP1? We all know Jarvis is fearless and scarred for life from the nut shot in the playoffs but I seem to remember him playing the point or half wall most of last year
