I appreciate the extent to which HC is often a political beast, but in my view Carter Savoie (University of Denver, 2002 birth year) should get a very long look — significantly longer than his younger brother, Matthew.

Not saying the older Savoie should make the roster, but in my view he’s flat out earned the opportunity to be in the mix for a role up front. His upward trajectory fascinates me and I can’t think of what more he’d need to do in NCAA action to show HC that he belongs on the radar.

Performance should trump pedigree, and Carter Savoie has really performed well with Denver. I’d be watching him very closely.

I don't see why he wouldn't get a camp invitation. It's a deep forward group so I'd say he's far from a lock but he should get a chance at the camp.

Is there a chance that all three of Bourgault, Savoie, and Tullio make the roster?

Tullio no chance. Bourgault and Savoie both gonna be at the camp but gotta win the spot I would assume. A factor is also of course how many players we get back from the pros.

Bourgault should. Tullio has little to no chance, and Savoie will be one of the guys fighting for a depth role. If Hockey Canada puts any stock into pedigree (which they rarely do) I'd call Savoie a long shot too, but they like to play older players.

My understanding from people is that they will only invite 30 players to the camp that will take place in Calgary Dec 9-12 and they will be taking 14 forwards, 8 D and 3 goalies again, so 25 players will make the team.

There's a good chance none of them make it. If politics weren't a thing I'd say Savoie has earned it most but I wouldn't be surprised if it's only bourgeault.

My team

NO: Byfield, Sillinger, Bourque, Dyrsdale, Perreault

Perfetti McTavish Jarvis
Johnson M.Savoie C.Savoie
Lapierre Wright Widsom
Neighbours Stankoven Bourgault

Power Zellweger
Guhle Clarke
Lambos Nelson

Cossa
Garand
Brochu

Extras: Foerster, Bedard, Cormier, Seeley

Ive read that the Kings are thinking of sending Byfield to the WJCs to knock off the rust from his injury not sure thats a good think or not for us. I still have memories of Hockey Canada reserving a spot for Jaret Anderson - Dolan and we got almost nothing out of him during the WJC. Byfield is a significantly higher caliber prospect though so the reward is greater.

Byfield would be the 2nd overall pick in his d+2 year...that would be a huge add. He would be expected to be the best player at the tournament.

Definitely a good thing in my opinion. Should be up there with Perfetti, Holtz, Eklund and Beniers for one of the the best forwards in the tournament.

A name to keep an eye on is Tucker Robertson. Undrafted in last years draft but is lighting up the OHL so far this season and is eligible to be on next years team too.

I also believe there is a good chance McTavish gets sent to the WJC team and possibly back to junior too. He plays his 9th game tonight so we’ll see.

Crazy he went undrafted last year.
Just one of those OHL pandemic players that were passed over because of lack of viewings.

I figured they would just invite Shirley himself. He's been a mainstay for years and irreplaceable.

Ah, the annual Christmas tradition of Colin Shirley jokes. It is as anticipated as is a Boxing Day Canada v USA classic.

Where is our friend Shirley these days? I had to google him...he's tearing up the Polish Elite league - I think it's the Polish Elite league - could be 2nd. division Polish league for all I know...

but good for Colin. He managed to parlay his junior career into a university degree and is still at it pursuing his pro hockey dreams. I admire him.

Nothing wrong with living in Krakow, nice city, and playing hockey. I wish Shirley all the best and look forward to discussing him again next year.

That’s a nice add for team Canada. I doubt we get Jarvis as he seems to be playing a pretty important role right now

Yes MacTavish being here is a big addition. This team is starting to round out quite well. Overall this tourney is actually quite well rounded. I could easily see any of the big five Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden and Finland winning but I think I'd give us a slight edge over anyone.

Big boost for Team Canada.
