Only way I can see this making any sort of sense is that Cameron is trying to build up Cossa's confidence against a lesser opponent in case he is forced to go back to him later on in the tournament. We all know how these these tourneys can go between the pipes...

Still makes little sense to me. But, I guess more than likely we will get to see Garand on Thursday against Slovakia.

Othmann omission is also a bit startling to me.

We shall see.
Dave Cameron must be a Devils fan

People here are way too down on Cossa. He was incredible in the playoffs and probably the best goalie in the Memorial Cup as well.

Can’t go wrong with either goalie and when he’s on the top of his game there is no better junior goalie in Canada

(* Wrong thread. *)

Bedard struggling on the PP.

Canada scores.

Reminds me of last night's USA/Germany game.

Well, not a great opening game. Hopefully Garand looks steady against Slovakia, as while Cossa wasn't terrible or anything he also didn't inspire confidence. I thought that Bedard and Greig looked like the best players for Canada, and while Johnson showed flashed I'd like to see him with a different line. Didn't love McTavish and Bedard together, seems like one has to defer to the other for anything effective to happen. Hopefully Othmann gets in for the next game to add some more skill to the forward group, and not at Kidney's expense. I'd take out Ostakchuk, but with his junior coach as one of the assistant coaches I'm not expecting it. I thought that Dufour and Cuylle looked solid as a huge wing pair with Greig.

Defence looked slow and disjointed. Time might be able to help the latter issue at least.

Ostapchuk played wing with Greig and Dufour - not Cuylle.
In my opinion you don’t touch that third line. They were Canada’s best line.

Won't lie, I thought that Cuylle was getting most of the shifts with Greig. I mostly noticed Ostapchuk bungling chances. Greig was great outside of the penalties, good on defence and pesky but smarter than I expected offensively.

I actually though Cuylle wasn’t too good - he needs to be stapled to talented offensive linemates to get the most out if his skill set.

The role he plays for this team makes him look Lazy and slow.

Ostapchuk should stay on that third line, he was creating chances with his speed and was their net front presence once they got sustained zone time. He played real well in my opinion. the 20-17-25 line should stay together.

Posted this in the GDT but....Hard to get a read on some guys from one game but Bedard is an absolute stud. Sure he could move it a bit more but with a shot like that, shoot it, nothing wrong with that.

Zellwegger Sebrango top pair really complimented each other well. Zellwegger is a bit of gambler (in a good way) and you can tell Sebrango has played a solid role in pro hockey with how rock solid he is. He absolutely killed a guy on the PK in the corner at one point.

Greig looked really good as player of the game but in classic Greig style he needs to stay out of the box. There was a streak there where Canada took like 4 or 5 straight penalties and itll kill them against better teams.

I actually didnt love McTavish. He didnt do anything to make me hate him or anything like that I just thought he would stand out more in a game against Latvia.

Johnson actually kinda invisible except a bad penalty on a faceoff

Cossa was solid. 7 shots going into the third ended up with 20 something. He coulda had that 2nd goal but it wasnt a softie or anything, stopped 3 or 4 breakaways including a short handed one at a key time. See what Garand does tomorrow, I'm not concerned about goaltending either way at this point

Stankoven deferring too much to the older players. Needs to play with more confidence and assertiveness

Ostapchuk was the standout weakest link at forward for me. Cuylle is not going to be a big piece at this level but as a cog who can skate up and down the wing, be physical (which Cameron clearly wants) and shoot when his more talented linemates get him the puck I like him. I'd drop either to get Othmann a regular wing shift next game, but I don't expect either of them to drop. We'll see how things stand next game.

This is what people should be talking about instead of obsessing over attendance at a August make up tournament...

proving once again, the only thing wrong with the game of hockey is the fans it attracts. No ticket for a junior tournament for any game should cost more than $25. And if the lack of attendence for this summer tournament finally drives that point home to the grifters at Hockey Canada, that the grift is finally over, than Dear Hockey Fans of Alberta and Western Canada - the rest of us owe you many thanks.

Struggling against Latvia is actually quite concerning to me. They should blow these guys out of the water. They didn't even beat division 1A last year and technically shouldn't even be here.

Latvia honestly looked better than I thought they would. Having said that, it’s a bit of a stretch to say Canada struggled in that game. They had full control and a ton of chances.

This latavian core is the same that only lost 4-2 to Canada's U18 team (that went on to win gold).

I think they're better than many thought and could even upset someone in the December tournament (considering most of the team is young enough to return)

Like other posters have pointed out - a majority of this Latvian group held the dominant 2021 U-18 team in Texas to a 4-2 game. They clearly play a style that can give Canada more trouble than other teams for some reason. Plus, being that it is a summer tourney and the players aren't in mid season form, I would imagine that the gap between the top teams and bottom teams is even smaller than it otherwise would be - especially in the early games while the big guns get their feet/timing back. Not overly concerned yet.

I still wouldn't mind getting Stankoven reunited on a line with McT and Bedard and see if they can find their U-18 chemistry.

Another major problem that this team will face is that it is a skill team, and the Edmonton ice surface is terrible. It’s like watching a game of tennis, the puck will not settle down. I noticed that in December and significantly noticed it during the playoffs.

Really? Rexall supposedly had the best ice in the league, did they fire the maintenance guy when they moved over to Rogers?
