It does matter. The 02's have to be the backbones of their teams because it's their last tournament, their last chance. If an 02 born player isn't good enough to lead the way you might as well select a younger guy instead. Somebody eligible to return.

They made McTavish captain of the team and he will probably be in the NHL next season. It doesn't matter that he is 19 and 6 months rather than 19 and 7 months, the pressure is going to be on him and Johnson.

Mctavish and Johnson will be expected to carry a large share of the load on this team offensively and with leadership, no question about it.

They are the go to guys for Canada this tournament.

Bedard is the biggest name in this tournament, by far. You bet there's pressure on him.

And he'll handle it just fine.

I think there is pressure on him to perform so as to keep the steam running for his first overall status and heavy rep as a future superstar but he won't be asked to lead the team or anything.

And yes, I think he will handle it well, he's a heck of a player.

As soon as I finished writing that I happened to go to to tsn's web page and the first thing my eyes see as one of the headlines is......."expectations sky high for Bedard at WJC"

Lol, perhaps there will be more pressure to lead then I thought. Cripes tsn, he's still a pup waiting to be drafted, settle down.

TSN has made the WJC an enormous television spectacle in Canada, much to their credit. Apart from the diehards in this forum, I don't think the average hockey fan outside of Canada is aware of that, or of the WJC in general.

Not that I'll be shedding any tears on behalf of TC, but the pressure on all their players is huge, especially so for a marquee name like Bedard.

Well, the WJC has caught on in other places, not to the extent that it has in Canada but it's pretty popular and well known In places like Finland and Sweden now, especially Finland.

Yep, tons of pressure on our players, huge event here.

True. My USA bias is showing.

I could ask 100 randos on the street about the WJC and would almost certainly get 100 quizzical looks.

yeah, it's still a nothing event in the U.S, not sure that will ever change, there is just too much to compete with sports wise in the U.S market.

Even among avid hockey fans down here it's a nothing burger. Zero promotion and the NHL Network doesn't capture many eyeballs at the best of times.

It's a shame, because as all of us know, this tournament consistently produces some of the most compelling hockey to be seen.

That's for sure, it's an intense 2 weeks and done tournament that tends to produce really good games and quite a few of the classic variety.

This is a B team and will most likely not medal

I think of this as experience for December

Not to sound disrespectful but that's fairly ridiculous - particularly with the absence of Russia.

Both Canada and USA appear to be favorites, even with the absence of top tier players.

Is Logan Mailloux even came close to make the Team ??

All the teams have the B teams , so yeah we do have a chance
Finland has pretty much their A team here. I'm trying to think of a single player they are missing and I'm drawing a blank.

So happy we have some hockey at this time of the year but going to be weird watching it in August. WJC and the holiday season is magical in Canada. Nothing like waking up early for Boxing Day shopping and grabbing a Tim Hortons then going home to watch game one of the WJC.

That sounds very Canadian reading it back lol.

Logan Mailloux could be peak Bobby Orr plus Chara's size, MacInnis' slapshot, and Stevens' checking, and he wouldn't sniff the team in the current environment.

Canada yes, USA no. Skating groups are probably pretty close, but the difference in net is staggering.
