Right teams will decide after development camp.
This gives some kids a chance to get warmed up for NHL camp and get another good tournament under their belt.
It is a momentum situation that will provide extra information.
Unless they are going to make the NHL or not 100%, I would send them.
I am not a fan of burning elc's or giving 9 games at the beginning of the season.
Send them down, have em go to 23 World Jrs also and make roster moves by the trade deadline if they are excelling. Then call them up for the last 9 games and save that year with the elc slide, while still integrating them with greater information, development and confidence in that decision before the end of the season.
I agree.

Crazy how this is a month away and we really have no idea what the team is gonna look like. Hopefully at the end of the week we get some reporting on it once free agency cools down.
Yup.

That's why I asked for everyone's "guest-estimates" on who will go, because I looked at the list and I have no idea.

Jake Neighbours has officially opted out. :(

At this point just make a roster consisting entirely of the '03 and '04 age groups and basically have them play twice. Seems like more than half of the original team has opted out.

This is my best guess at this point based on what I am hearing about who is returning from last Christmas and who I think might replace them.

Not Returning:

Power
Perfetti
Bourque
Johnston
McTavish
Guhle
Neighbours
Wright
Guenther
Bourgault
Sourdif
Cossa

Forwards from original team:
C. Bedard
R. Greig
L. Stankhoven
W. Cuylle
E. Desnoyers
Added Forwards:
W. Johnston
T. Foerster
B. Otthman
J. Roy
F. Pinelli
M. Savoie
Z. Dean
R. Winterton
Z. Bolduc

Defence from original team:
Zellweger
Seeley
Sebrango
Cormier
Lambos
O'Rourke
Added Defence:
B. Clarke
J. Thompson

Goalies from original team:
B. Brochu
D. Garand
Added Goalie:
B. Gaudreau

My gut feeling (I choose to be optimistic)...

Power - zero chance he plays
Perfetti - better than average chance he plays
McTavish - 50/50
Guhle - 50/50
Neighbours - opted out
Wright - I think he plays
Guenther - 50/50
Bourgault - better than average chance he plays
Sourdif - better than average chance he plays
Cossa - better than average chance he plays

I believe most of the big name '02's aren't going to play
But why not? I guess I'm naïve believing it would help their stock going into the fall.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, GS. I'm just hoping/wishing for a very strong team in August. Can't help it.

This year for alot of these 02's is the first real chance they have at cracking an NHL roster. That's more important to them than playing in the mickey mouse WJC tourney - and possibly risking injury and hurting their NHL careers. (See Kirby Dach)

I provided my list a couple of days ago as to who I believe is not playing and I am sticking to it for now. Like I said it may be off a player or two but I think it will be close.

So far Neighbours opted out today, the Jets announced at the draft that Perfetti was not going (they want him to focus on training and being ready for the season) and Guenther had a major knee injury that kept him out of the Memorial Cup and there is no way he is ready to play games in less than a month nor would the Coyotes want to risk it. From the video above it doesn't sound like the Stars will be encouraging Bourque to go either

Power, Perfetti, McTavish, Johnson, Neighbours plus a couple of others , all are likely to be playing in the NHL next year and their teams want the training and getting ready for camp in September and don't want to further extend an already long season by another 6 weeks.

Not trying to be a downer lol

Hate to be a Debbie Downer but this tourney is shaping up to be a dud, no hype whatsoever plus at least a dozen top prospects that won't be there. No Russia will really hurt the competitive integrity as well. Hopefully we get a few surprises from guys who want their once in a lifetime chance to play in this.

I agree. Come on, Canadian kids, play in August.

3:25 - 4:55 provides some good insight from NHL teams thinking on going vs. not going.

I don't need any more bad news.

It makes no sense to play this.

Even with some prospects missing the tournament, the rosters will be equal or better to the rosters for the wjc that will be held in December, so I don't see how this tourney will be a dud unless you also think the one in December will be a dud...

Do you think Hendrix Lapierre plays? I think he was one of the last ones cut last time.

FWIW: Here was the selection camp roster in December.

These guys have the inside track on most of the guys who wern't given an invite.

A guy that I'd say has a big chance to make the team is Thompson. He played for Cameron and he missed the camp due to covid. I think he would have made the team had he been available.

Good find, I would think that most teams view it the same way. Players are going to have varying degrees of pressure from NHL teams and agents not to go.

To be a bit of a broken record, I do think that it would be a good idea as much as possible to go with players who may still be available in 2023. The team can still be competitive while building around 2003s and 2004s with some 2002s sprinkled in. I doubt that that happens though.

Where you are hearing that Bourgault isn't going? He's in Edmonton right now for Development Camp and then the World Juniors start about three weeks later, so there's even talk he will hang around until then.
