Don't you know how it works? Canadian hockey teams are always meh...never anything that special. Until of course they get beat and then it becomes, OMG. We beat a dream Team Team Canada with 20 1st, rd. draft picks.

You just got to filter out the noise...like I do.
Can you imagine the bragging that would go on if any other country had Power, McTavish, Bedard, Wright, Byfield, Drysdale, Cossa under the age of 20?

Can you imagine the bragging that would go on if any other country had our 2023 draft class?

The worst part : I expect the sniping from jealous non Canadians but a good chunk of the criticism comes from within - there are certain Canadian poster who NEVER have anything good to say about Canadian players/teams. It's sad.

The main thing to remember is that Canada is overrated until the end of the tournament. If the team loses, it was overrated by delusional fans compared to the mighty talent of (whichever team won) which was obvious all along. If the team won, either 1. who cares that a loaded team Canada won in a tournament that only Canadians care about (if WJC) or 2. who cares that Canada won hockey is a small sport globally compared to soccer (senior tournaments). Bonus result - if Canada wins the Canada/World Cup it doesn't matter because that tournament was rigged (can also apply to the Olympics and corrupt Canadian referees, at the poster's discretion). Rinse and repeat, to varying degrees.

with talk of the tournament rejigged for the summer...and hopefully all '02 born and younger players are eligible...this is your Gold medal winning team right here.

If they re-schedule the tournament, the same players from the cancelled tournament will be the ones playing.

Sweden with Raymond can beat that and aren’t far off. Raymond, Eklund, Holtz, Edvinsson, Wallstedt, that is as much high end talent as Canada. USA can easially beat that Canada team too.

Finland and Russia have decent chances in single elimination games. I get that the post is sarcastic but many fans of other hockey nations get fed up with the weird superiority complex including me.
The superiority complex is because Canada has won the most golds, duh

I’m not saying Canada don’t have the best team on paper. But I am saying that it’s disingenuous to pretend no one can compete. Saying that Sweden (my country) and teams like the US have a chance against Canada doesn’t make me jealous of Canada. You can acknowledge that Canada have the best team on paper but it’s disingenous to pretend that other teams don’t have damn good teams that aren’t far off and can beat Canada. ”Just give us the gold already they can’t compete” is the attitude I might take issue with, but I can’t tell if it’s serious or just some lighthearted banter.

Sweden have Raymond, Holtz, Wallstedt, Edvinsson and Eklund all under the age of 20. Is that worse than what you mentioned? Not by much. The US have a 2001 born core that arguably is just as good as the Canadian U-20 core as well. I can imagine the bragging, because other nations have similarly talented young generations coming through right now.

I'm okay with that - as long as all of the teams follow the same rules.

It's just silly to think that you can predict player availability and status (health) for the same exact 25 roster players 6-7 months from now. Impossible. therefore the only logical answer is, yes, try to reassemble the roster as much as possible, but all the exact same players may not be available to you in July/August. so, all '02 born players and younger would have to be eligible and available to their Federations in order to get this tournament back in the rink.

While I would like to see a WJC dream team type of tournament, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go predominately '03s and younger for a summer tournament...get in some reps for the 2023 WJC. I'm good either way.

Maybe I’m an outlier but I’m perfectly happy to admit when other countries have better age groups, I think Sweden in 2017 had their best team of the decade but failed to beat Canada in the semifinal in Montréal; conversely Canada had a team (the best they had in the 2010s) in Russia in 2012 that would essentially be a team of half NHL all-stars at this point, but was dumped out by a top heavy but decent USA team.

Point being I think most people from Canada understand that they can lose individual games but the strength of the overall all-time national programme will always be number one (with only Russia/USSR being the only ones close) and that’s I think to answer your question is where the sense of somewhat deserved superiority comes from, I hope that answers your question.

I agree with your points generally. I accept that Canadians have the right to brag about being the best. It’s only the ”no one can compete with us” arguments that I don’t agree with.

Do you think they will pull it off?

The one BIG motivation - they don't want to have to give back all that ticket money.

After years of posters throwing dirt on the grave of Hockey Canada, we have some amazing prospects coming onto the scene - the kind of prospects that other countries would brag endlessly about if they were their kids.

Add an insanely deep 2023 and Canadians can't help but be optimistic.

Brag about your prospects while realizing the 2001 born USA group and 02/03 born Sweden group are of a similar caliber.

They are not.

If you don't like how we speak about our prospects, stay out of the Canadian thread - a win/win.

I can’t see how those Canadian prospects are a level above those American and Swedish generations.

And ”Stay out of our thread”? Is not the entire point of this place discussing hockey rationally instead?

Fine. You are right.

Now let us talk about our prospects without hijacking the thread, please.

Comparing your prospects to prospects of other countries is not ”hijacking the thread” it’s contributing with intresting discussion.

So, it looks as though August will be the month for a re-scheduled WJHC.

Hopefully all players '02 born and younger are eligible (they will have to be as a lot of players off the December roster will take a pass to prepare for NHL camps)

It's unfortunate that they would think like that. I would view a high intensity elite level tournament better prep for NHL camp than a loosely organized drills and shinny with a scattering of NHLers and NHL hopefuls.

but we shall see how it goes.

Oh, and you really got to learn to filter out the noise on this forum. There are only about a half dozen or so posters on this site who actually know what they are talking about...express your opinion and ignore everything else. That is what the ignore button is there for. You should see my ignore list. It runs deep.

I don't mind them re-doing the 2022 WJC as a cash grab, but it's low interest for me. Sometimes when you miss and event you can't recapture what makes it good on the second attempt. Even if they managed to get every eligible player there I don't have much interest at the moment. That could change for me, but I doubt it. I would like it as a development opportunity for all involved.

The ignore function rendered this thread quite interesting to me. For a minute I thought that one poster was having a breakdown and arguing passionately with himself.

Ah, JackSlater one of the half dozen or so who knows what he is talking about. A liberal use of the ignore button makes this forum almost a useful resource.

Yeah, I don't expect a re-jigged summer tournament to be anything close to the Christmas tournament, but by mid August I'm usually counting the days to hockey season. I'll watch, grill some burgers and watch in my mancave with a few brews. it's good enough for me.

The superiority complex is because Canada has won the most golds, duh

Canada's superiority complex stems from an inferiority complex considering the country defines itself by the sport. No other country does this with hockey, at least nowhere near Canada's level.
When people's self-identity it tied to one particular thing, you'll get a lot of uneccessary boasting and bragging when successful. It's human nature.

LOL! You're the best.

I've "ignored" - apparently I have an obsessed poster following me around like a dog on a leash but I never see his posts. A few posters have P.M.'d me and are laughing about it.

Yeah that makes enough sense. It's akin to the U18 or Hlinka for me. Not very interested in watching for whatever reason, though I am somewhat interested in finding out who played well after the fact. If it can help to prepare for the 2023 tournament that is also good.

If you guys think it’s cold in eastern Canada at the moment wait until next year’s tournament in Novosibirsk

It's a nice 6 at the moment. Was -12ish and wet the other day though. I'm glad that they are returning to a far flung timezone honestly and hopefully all the players enjoy the freezing weather.

As long as Scott Salmond doesn't do a repeat of his 2013 idiotic Ufa gaffe, we'll be okay. We can handle the cold temps.

True, they should bring enough magic lamps to go around this time.
