You need Bedard in the top-6. You have a player that has one of the best shots in the world at your disposal… and you’re going to sit him because “age”?
You know better Cameron.
If you have Cameron’s number we would all appreciate it if you would call him and tell him this. :thumbu:

Michkov is a whopping 7 months older than Bedard and he is not getting sheltered minutes as the 13th forward. Instead he is seeing top line duty, heavy power play time, directing other players out on the ice, and at one point (according to Ferraro) even gesturing to the coach to leave his unit on the ice for a PP. The dude is literally calling audibles from the ice as an underager, while we f***king sit Bedard because he’s too young! :madfire:

How many of the LHD playing right side are currently playing right side on their CHL, or NCAA teams? It’s not that the players looked bad but they looked like they were struggling to get use to playing on their off side. Maybe it just ring rust from the long lay off and it will get corrected.

I’ve noticed how quick people are to jump on every little error that comes from playing the wrong side, however, I watched closely in that game and could see many advantages of playing the offside. For every play I saw that was made more difficult, there was a play that was made much easier with our defencemen being opposite handed. The pros and cons were honestly about 50/50.

I just didn’t love the puck transition on zone exits on the right side for the most part. It seemed like guys had to make individual plays too often for my liking. Either way it was a choppy game overall so we’ll see how things look as the tourney progresses and the players settle in.

Definitely agreed. Watching our RD repeatedly attack the middle of the ice to create scoring chances was great to watch. Albeit a low sample size here with just one pre-tournament game, but I saw the positives and negatives as balanced too in that Russia game.

Really thought that third line came as advertised. They certainly seem difficult to play against.

Until you mentioned Guenther, I had completely forgot all about him. Did he play that game? Oh, well, just one bad game though.
Kind of weird, given the chemistry on Edmonton (WHL) that Neighbours and Guenther would not be on a line together.

Off topic question: Is Shane, since his bday is on the 1st of January, allowed to take off the cage from that day onwards?

Great question! As far as I can see he would be eligible on his 18th birthday to take it off.

IIHF Rule 31.6 said:
All skaters in the age category Under-18 must wear a cage constructed in such a way that neither the puck nor a stick blade can penetrate it.

I think he will get his chances to move up in the Czech game, if he has a good showing I suspect you will see him force them into top 6 minutes, we will never win this thing with only one line going on offense and just one other good energy line with the Greig unit. Bedard won't have to be Michkov and he doesn't have to be, He just has to do what he does best to help give us another offensive line.

I think he has it in him, next game is important for him.

I think there were some mix ups, but part of that was the coach experimenting a little bit with guys on both sides. I'm a wings fan so I was paying attention to Sebrango and he was going out there on either side of the ice quite a bit. Started on the left with Lambos, at points had shifts on the right with Power. He went out on 2 shifts on back to back penalty kills and played a different side on each of them.

I think theyll get dialed in more on where theyre playing once the games get going and wouldnt worry about it too much

Gretzky 6gp 8g 9a
Lindros 7gp 4g 0a
Spezza 7gp 0g 2a
Crosby 6gp 2g 3a
McDavid 7gp 1g 3a

Those are the stats of the other players to play for Canada at the age of 16. If anyone is expecting Bedard to be lighting up the score sheet he has really big shoes to fill.

Their definition of "Under 18"

“Under 18” Age Category The players participating in any IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship must be eligible to compete as a male athlete and be no younger than fifteen (15) years of age, and no older than eighteen (18) years of age, by December 31 of the year in which the Championship Season ends. No under-age waiver is permitted.

That's referring to the U18 tournament requirements, but I can't find any other reference to U18 in the rulebook, and they do refer to that definition when talking about the equipment requirements. If this is what they're defining it as then Wright wouldn't be allowed to take it off as I guess they're using the end of this year as the reference point and his birthday is January 5th.

Michkov has also played KHL so it’s not too surprising

Merry Christmas, all!

All we want for Christmas is for Davey boy to play Bedard in the top 6. Excited for tomorrow!

Yeah I think that expectations might be a bit out of line for Bedard. I hope that he scores a ton but I doubt he does more than the non-Gretzkys to a notable degree.

Jack Hughes started the world championships with a cage then put a visor on the day of his birthday. I assume Shane will also be allowed to do that, could be wrong though

Ryan Ellis turned 18 on January 1 of the 2009 tournament but he still had the cage through the gold medal game. That was 13 years ago though so things may have changed.

Christmas now, so time to line up your drinks and eats for tomorrow. Nice to start off with what should be a reasonably competitive game on the drive for gold. It's not a flawless team but it looks good enough to win. Expecting gold.

good post

historically this is not a 16 year old tournament for Canadian kids. The very best can play a role but the numbers don’t lie.

There’s a saying; “Numbers don’t lie, but they don’t tell the whole truth either.”

How many of those players were given substantial minutes? If they are just getting spot duty, it’s pretty hard to score from the bench.

I agree its a bit of a chicken and an egg thing. Usually the Canadian teams are deep and the kids don’t get gifted anything. Most players that make the team are use to being stars on their respective teams and have to adapt to new roles. 16 is still young even for super stars so they are going to be assigned a role down the depth chart.

Not sure about Spezza and Lindros, but Crosby and McDavid were used very sparingly and would have put up a lot more had they been given bigger roles.
