Definitely not seeing enough out of Shane Wright, but that was also game 1. Guhle a rock defensively, really laying the lumber. Canada tightened up after a very loose first but I don't think they played that well all in all. If that was the US or Sweden easily could have been a loss.

Liked Cormier and Sourdif until that awful hit. Not sure what he was thinking on that one. Bourgault was pretty good in the bottom 6. Would like to see Bedard at C somewhere, doesn't have a lot of chances to wind up through the NZ playing W.

Yeah, after this game Bedard should be getting top 6 ice time. He heavily outplayed Wright and took the top line spot from Guenther. He was always creating something on the ice. Cameron would be a fool to not keep playing him there.
Bedard took the spot from Bourgault, who took Guenthers spot on the 4th line. Wonder if Bourgault has a conky and will miss time or not.

Agreed on pretty much all counts.

Guhle to me was just so solid, his physicality really made him a force out there. McTavish is a man amongst boys.

2 games in a row that Wright has not looked good at all. I want to see Bedard get a look at centre and Wright in a more reduced role.

Overall, lots to like. The guys played a pretty hard nosed game with some skill. Good way to play and build off.

I’d move Perfetti to center, keep Bedard at right wing, and move Neighbours up from the 3rd line. Offense can cycle through Perfetti (who’s looked good in both the Russia and Czech games) and Bedard, and Neighbours can provide the sandpaper and board work, and give defensive cover. Keep the McTavish line as is (and hope for a better performance from Johnson next game). Figure out how to work Wright into the bottom six.

Hopefully Bourgault is okay, he was having a strong game in the bottom 6 in particular.

Added a lot of skill and good work driving the play on those lines. Gave us a really balanced lineup.

Didn’t see him out there after that hit he took off guard.

He just turned 19 last month it also takes times to develop chemistry
The 2 on 1 goal was some bad technique. Power didn't help Garand by letting the Czechs pass it over 2x.

I liked Canada's game after the 1st period. They finally looked like a team playing at a faster speed than Czechs. The Greig line was playing like we expected them to.

But, McTavish is the best forward on this team and it's interesting who his linemates will be.

Wright will be fine.

It's their defense and goaltending that will be put to the test. Lots of things needed to be tightened up or they aren't winning gold. I think a better team will pick them apart in a knockout game.

Anyone have some info on Guenther? Is he hurt, disliked, can’t play the system, slept with coaches daughter? 13th forward.. Curious why. Ty

Good to face some adversity early. They dug themselves out of a hole and came away with the W. Coaches still got lots of material to keep their attention in the day off, and with a couple of good practices get ready for the Austrians tomorrow. I'm hoping it's a competitive game.

I do admit, the situation with Wright is a tad bit concerning.

on the other hand, McTavish and Power can be a a two man wrecking crew.

Some good and bad from that game. It's probably useful that the team showed some battle and push to fight through some adversity, but that's also a game against a middling team that didn't even have its pre-tournament game. After the many defensive lapses of the first things tightened up, probably a combination of Canada's defence making better choices and also the Czechs wearing out a bit. Very fortunate to get the two man advantages, but at least they did capitalize. Power is quite skilled and confident and of course McTavish is a beast. Wouldn't mind seeing Stankoven mixed in with Guenther up in the box. Not sure what to make of Garand, he wasn't terrible but you'd also probably like him to keep that first period to two goals against. I liked Sebrango's game even outside of the goal. I'm also convinced of Bedard, the guy looks confident out there so let him play with some legitimate minutes. Johnson strikes me as a bit of a wildcard who might look great one game and pretty poor the next.

Wright is clearly shaping up to be the whipping boy. I'm not looking to pile on him but the coaching staff cannot try to force its preconceived plans when they are not working. I won't pretend to know a lot about Wright but it is hard to believe that this guy was the dominant player in the U18 tournament a few months ago, ahead of a guy like McTavish, and now looks like this and is having a disappointing regular season. 17 year olds rarely light the tournament on fire but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some kind of injury at play here, though not one serious enough for him to miss out on time after he sat out all of the previous season.

Canada has lots of room for improvement after that game, and I do expect the team to get better. Good news is that none of the teams looked awe inspiring on the first day.

What did you expect though? McTavish is older and has had success playing pro hockey already. He has an NHL camp, NHL games and quite a few games as a pro under his belt now while Wright hardly played last season and is still facing mostly random kids now. Hockey Canada also made a mistake to not select Othmann. Chemistry with him could have helped and many players on the roster are clearly worse. Wright is gonna be fine though and go 1st overall. Anything else would shock me.

I expected McTavish to be better than Wright. McTavish's NHL games have nothing to do with Wright being underwhelming in the OHL season and Wright's lack of games last year don't explain how he could have a very successful u18 tournament ahead of various players in this tournament and now look worse than they are. I hope that Wright is successful, but if he isn't then he needs to be moved down. The tournament is short and there is not time for guys to hold spots due to pedigree.

They should have invited Othmann to camp. Beyond that I don't know.

Really hope Johnson cleans up his game moving forward. His skill with the puck and creativity is undeniable, but he made way too many high risk plays and turnovers for my liking.

He was not good last night but there is value in having a guy like that. Exactly the kind of player Canada needed last year when it needed a goal to break things open in the gold medal game.
