Curious what the return will be. If Minnesota gets a lot then I understand why the Sharks aren't in on this, however, if the return is mediocre, there isn't really an excuse for them not to be involved.

Based on these boards, and various articles/reports/writers the returns seem to revolve around pieces like 7OA, Holtz, etc. Eklund/11OA are our only pieces in the same range in terms of value so we probably just don't have the assets Minnesota wants.

Both those teams have high picks and lots of prospects, I suspect the return will be pretty substantial

Kings are playing chess while the Sharks are eating checkers pieces. They will win another two Cups before we ever make it back to the Final.

I, like you, am also completely devastated we didn’t trade a 1st and a prospect for Kevin Fiala..
It’s more about the Kings diligently stockpiling assets for years allowing them to painlessly make trades like this.

That said, if the Sharks actually are serious about competing in the present, 11th OA + any prospect not named Eklund for Fiala would have been a fantastic trade.

This front office can’t piss and won’t get off the pot.

Sucks to see LA get better again, but gotta give it to them: they actually faced the real problems and worked on getting good draft capital on those bad years. We are just in the valley of death in the middle and probably closer to that #8-#12 range that gets potentials but no superstars.

It sucks that I've become more pessimistic over these couple of months, but I think it's because when I watched the playoffs I really understood what it takes to even fight there, not to even mention winning it all. I love our prospects, but we don't have MacKinnon, Makar yet.

Paywall.

Speculate away.

Who'd have ever thought in the summer of 2019 that the Sharks would be needing to upgrade the defense just three years later?

James Reimer is number 30 on the athletics trade board. No real information just says he will be traded if the sharks want to roll a Kahk-Hill pairing
With how many teams looking for goaltending, I assumed that the Sharks could get a real haul for Reimer, who is a proven, established product.

I remember being pretty excited about the idea of Ferraro-Burns, Simek-Karlsson, Vlasic-Merkley. But I’m also on record as saying we should have traded Vlasic as early as the summer of 2017, so who knows.

Simek-Burns, Dillon-Karlsson, and Vlasic-Merkley was the dream. There was consternation about trading Dillon and sticking Ryan in that spot.

I mean, I suppose the good thing is that nobody saw Middleton and Ferraro developing as they did...

I was a huge Joakim Ryan proponent. I still maintain that he did nothing wrong.

For the record though, I was always very high on Mario, even then.

I can't say I like the Kings acquiring and signing Fiala--old hatred dies hard--but I also can't care that much. They're at a different stage in their rebuild than we are, and while I like Fiala (maybe a contract comp for Meier?), the Sharks both can't really afford him and don't really need him right now.

Of course they need him in terms of more offense, but the rest of the team isn't good enough or on an upward trajectory where it would be a logical addition. The Kings, unfortunately, are. The sad truth is that it's highly unlikely the Sharks don't have to face several years of struggles before they can get on the same kind of upward arc, and until then it doesn't make sense to mortgage the future for players like this.

I'm not as opposed as some are to re-signings, like Hertl, because I think they do bring value to a rebuild (and wouldn't get enough in return in a trade) and the cap space argument is pretty much pointless for the next few years, but acquiring guys from the outside at the cost of major organizational assets? Stupid, stupid, stupid. So I'm glad we sat this one out.
