The only way I can justify any of this is they're trying to recapture the magic of those early Sharks teams.

dropping the gloves does not protect those players, never has, never willHe brings a physical element and willingness to drop the gloves that they need to protect the smurfs like Eklund, Bordeleau and Barabanov. Same reasoning as the Kunin trade which I understand now given the broader context of what Grier wants this team to be. They are going to suck on the ice but at least not get pushed around.
While we all liked the direction the team was going based on his draft evaluations, did he really make any ground-breaking or amazing picks? Feel like players like Merkley and Eklund were obvious picks regardless.Cool, the one guy who was doing his job is gone
On the bright side, at least I'll die one day
making the obvious pick is actually groundbreaking for this franchiseWhile we all liked the direction the team was going based on his draft evaluations, did he really make any ground-breaking or amazing picks? Feel like players like Merkley and Eklund were obvious picks regardless.
If the reports are true, I'm not against it as long as they replace him with someone who continues to value talent over size. Though after this recent draft, I'm a little skeptical.

Those teams lacked high-end talent (to put it mildly) but were incredibly deep (especially on defense), had very good (sometimes great) goaltending, and played a system designed by a respected coach with every player buying in.The only way I can justify any of this is they're trying to recapture the magic of those early Sharks teams.
DW Jr.'s drafts had a clear vision and you could see what his thought process was. He was basically the only person in the org that you could say that about, considering this franchise has become fully rudderless in the past three years. While we all liked the direction the team was going based on his draft evaluations, did he really make any ground-breaking or amazing picks? And Merkley and Eklund don't even look like great picks in hindsight. I would much rather have K'Andre Miller and Dylan Guenther right now. His other first round pick Wiesblatt also looks like a bust. While we all liked the direction the team was going based on his draft evaluations, did he really make any ground-breaking or amazing picks? The only way I will hate this move is if Tim Burke takes his old job back. Although I'm guessing this will be the first of other moves to come. While we all liked the direction the team was going based on his draft evaluations, did he really make any ground-breaking or amazing picks? Gives the Cuda a big bodied guy to help them compete in the AHL. I am pretty sure that we're going to see the Cuda try to compete in the AHL in a big way to establish a winning culture with the next group. Gadjovich will either be a healthy scratch 13/14F or be a nice AHL piece to go along with some of those smaller Cuda players coming in this year. But like he sucks. Why not just not qualify either? They have enough guys already. I can easily build a roster without either.
Do we believe there will be a single good move this off-season anymore?
Eklund and Merkley are fine. I would absolutely not want Miller and Guenther over them right now.And Merkley and Eklund don't even look like great picks in hindsight. I would much rather have K'Andre Miller and Dylan Guenther right now. His other first round pick Wiesblatt also looks like a bust.
I never understood the adulation for DWJr given that none of his picks have panned out yet aside from Ferraro, who was good value for where he was picked but really nothing special, and Norris who the organization appears to have grossly misevaluated post-draft.
Fans clamor for change. Same fans whine about every bit of change made.Do we believe there will be a single good move this off-season anymore?
I agree, which is why I hope if he's gone, they replace him with someone who continues to value talent over size. Because other than that, I don't think he really made any moves where he went off-the-board and rewarded from it. He made moves anyone with a similar mindset would make.DW Jr.'s drafts had a clear vision and you could see what his thought process was. He was basically the only person in the org that you could say that about, considering this franchise has become fully rudderless in the past three years.
Way too early to tell on Eklund vs Guenther, I'd bet you'll be wrong regarding that long term. Miller seems like the better pick over Merkley though, I agree. I'd say Jr's been fine, but hopefully his replacement is better. And Merkley and Eklund don't even look like great picks in hindsight. I would much rather have K'Andre Miller and Dylan Guenther right now. His other first round pick Wiesblatt also looks like a bust.

Leonard and Weatherby are not young prospects anymore. They are finished products and they both stink. Chmelevski and Reedy are slightly better but not NHL players either.Eklund and Merkley are fine. I would absolutely not want Miller and Guenther over them right now.
Ferraro, Norris, Reedy, Chm are all fine. Doing well.
Leonard and Weatherby are going to be fine 4th liners.
Kniazev and Hatakka are too early to tell but 2019 was a bad year.
2020 is going to be a great class.
2021 has a lot of potential
Inb4 Merkley for Tyler Myers or some other pylonMerkley seems like the perfect candidate to be moved by Grier. Based on what I assume Grier wants in his players, Merkley does not fit at all. Grier would take a Douglas Murray over a Merkley everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. I’m curious of the return on a package that included Labanc and Merkley.
Brent Burns for OEL and MyersInb4 Merkley for Tyler Myers or some other pylon
If this team wants to go full Bedard, I'm all for itBrent Burns for OEL and Myers
If the choice was Eklund and Merkley or Miller and Guenther I would choose Eklund and Merkley. Mostly because Eklund has a potential Guenther doesn't. Merkley has potential as well to contribute offensively that Miller doesn't. I'd take Miller over Merkley but the package I'd go with Ek and Merk.Leonard and Weatherby are not young prospects anymore. They are finished products and they both stink. Chmelevski and Reedy are slightly better but not NHL players either.
Not preferring K'Andre Miller, an ace shutdown defenseman on a conference finalist, to Ryan Merkley is pure homerism.
