But who is going to trade for him before he goes to arbitration?
Yep exactly. If the Sharks who have literally 3 top 6 forwards don’t want to take a chance on a guy that’s skilled like Dahlen, who the hell else will? If the Sharks who are going no where and have the cap space to fit him no matter what he gets don’t think he’s worth it, why would anyone else?

I also wouldn’t add anything to Dahlen in a trade. Like if we are talking PIT then get Blueger or someone on the outs there back. If not then let him walk. No point in trying to add to get a player who probably won’t be any better.

Dylan Strome isn't being qualified. Could beat guy to target

Apparently same with kubalik. Both are worth checking out
I don't want to be that guy, but until someone gets moved, there isn't any room to target a player that won't be making league minimum. Assume Ferraro, Kunin, and KK sign bridge deals that total 7.5M ( Ferraro = 3 - 3.5, Kunin = 2, KK = 2.25), there's no space left beyond replacement level players. Sharks need to move contracts out before anything can happen...

Because you like the majority of the board seen him tear up a league that is even lower then the echl in talent and got excited for him to do the same in the nhl.
Isn't that sort of the same with any prospect regarding quality of competition? He's not 20 anymore, i get it. I forget that sometimes because he just had his rookie NHL year I guess.

3 and a half years ago-ish I hoped he would be a good forward for the Sharks. 20 goal guy would be nice. I'm not sure about being lumped in with the majority of the board, but 'whatever floats your boat, Barrie.' (in my best Archer voice, which isn't that great per my gf, my cat didn't like it either; he actually got up and left the room)

I get attached at some level to all the Sharks players. I wasn't wrong to let my hopes get high regardless of his numbers or even how he's turned out. I hope with a new coach there will be a system that better utilizes his (and all the other players) skills and he can flourish here. If not I wish him well but my attachment is to the sweater for the most part. (Sturm, Jumbo and Pavs have been exceptions where I'd look in on their numbers and stuff post-Sharks) I'm not always great about remembering the ins and outs of the CBA and how all the contract/arbitration stuff works and I'm even worse at having that affect how much I like a player. I like the CBA and cap stuff, but from a fan stand point. I'm interested, but not interested in becoming an expert or I'd read and study those things.

I like to get excited about the youth, they have the time to grow into being a good player, lots of untapped potential. I understand there are stats and scales and equivalencies and I enjoy reading about those as well as others' opinions.

Overall, my fandom isn't logical, you can't quantify it. Just like anyone else's fandom, it's personal and to some constantly varying extent emotional. There's no advanced stat for it nor is there a meter.

I feel like there could be a posting/poster type scale tho, a Hodge Equivalency (since he's constantly correct about everything). Like NHLe but for prognosticational type purposes. Think SNOG but on anti-oxidants so it takes years to know exactly how correct you were. Posters can make their picks and explain what they base it off of or not. But showing your work would yield a higher HOGe (the G is a J sound: hoj-E) thusly allowing people to actually be more correct than other people so that everyone can be some shade of correct and you could actually have someone be the correctest when generally that state of being correct is a binary thing and potentially in a constant state of flux. Of course everything Hodge posts would be spoilers so...

I think it's quite possible that Grier saw a player in Dahlen who--fairly or not, since he may have been hampered by a few issues--doesn't have a high enough skill level to play effectively in the top six while also not having nearly the proper motor or style of play/body to fit in the bottom six. And if he talked to other teams about him this weekend and they harbored the same concerns--meaning there's not really much of a trade market for him--it's not unreasonable to just cut their losses and move on from Dahlen now.

And in a way I think it's a good thing to have someone in charge now who isn't emotionally invested in the way the prior front office was. Fact is, the Sharks' patience in waiting for Dahlen to come over shouldn't mean a thing in terms of their judgment or valuation of him now. It would suck to come out of it all with nothing, but it was a shot taken and you have to accept not all of them are going to go in.

Because the potential upside does not justify that risk. Dahlen sucks. I can only hope Grier recognizes that Barabanov is just as bad and ships him out next.
That's debatable. Your view of the risk is not something I agree with and the downsides aren't that big of a problem. As for Barabanov, I'd appreciate an instantaneous disagreement between the new GM and the guy that signed him. Not that I'd care who wins out but the rot within the organization is bigger than Barabanov and that sort of conflict is the only chance the team makes any move towards removing it. The Kunin trade is not a good start for Grier's competency for building a team but it's not insurmountable or anything.

Is Nino Niederreiter gonna cost too much? If we are able to shed salary and can somehow afford him, I think that would be huge.

That would check one team off want-goalie list

Toronto wouldn’t just go after Murray. I think that actually makes it MORE likely they go after a guy like Reimer since they’d need a good 1B and there isn’t many better in the league that are available.
Konecny is on the block in philly. Any interest?
Yes for sure but don’t think we could afford it cap wise or asset wise.

With what cap space?
It would not be a pick up for just picks. Obviously something would be going back. And even with a trade for picks we could still afford it.

We have 3 depth players that can and should be traded no matter if we are rebuilding or competing which should get the sharks another roughly 8 million in cap space to add to the already 5 million we have with basically a full roster already signed.

Where are you getting 5 million from? Ferraro, Kahkonen need extensions at say 2.5 each. That leaves us with a grand .6 million in cap room

After Grier explicitly said "we want to be hard to play against," I'd be really surprised if they signed Strome. I personally wouldn't be against it though.

I assume this is the reason Dahlen isn't being qualified so no sense getting our hopes up for any high skill players.

I think my top 2 free agent targets in terms of what they’d cost are Domi and Vatrano. I don’t think either will break the bank and both could help our depth with Domi occasionally filling in the top six. I’d also love Andrew Copp but he may be priced out of our range sadly.

Vatrano would be good. Maybe because Grier was with BYR last season, he can get both Vatrano and Trocheck and keep them together. A package deal of sorts.

The most important off season move will be the head coach. They right guy instilling the right culture will transform the whole org. Gerard gallant takes a rag tag start vegas team and dominates off the bat turning a 4th line nobody named William karlsson into a superstar. then, he goes the NYR and improves them 50 points. Trotz similarly transforms the islanders in 2018.

And coaches like Deboer do the opposite. they take good teams and make them tank. Boughner was a terrible hire too.

If Grier finds the right guy, who instills the right work ethic and attention to detail, then the sharks could contend very quickly. I personally think coaches matter the most in hockey over any other sport (see how Lemaire transformed the whole sport and changed the rules with the investion of the trap). The right coach will get a ton out of the young guys: Bordeleau, Eklund, Gregor, balcers, Ferraro, Merkley, Reedy, etc. They need a good system and they could surprise. The coach is SOOO big.
Agreed. It would be a major stride forward if Grier uses his NYR connection to poach Kris Knoblauch to be HC here. IMHO, he's the next Bednar type, perfect for developing our kids, and a big analytics guy which we all love. Getting him over Brunette or D Quinn would be HUGE.
