Alright y’all. Here is my monthly but always wrong hope for the off-season!
1. Mike Grier as GM. Not the flashiest of choices but I’m coming around to giving him a chance as long as they give him the right support.
2. Andrew Brunette as HC. Ryane Clowe or Joe Thornton brought on as assistants to go along with some more experienced additions. Brunette was not given a chance to really implement a system in FLA but his style of play was very reliant on speed and transition which seems to be what DWjr likes in prospects.
3. Keep 11th overall and take Korchinski or Savoie.
4. Trade Reimer for a 2nd. Maybe to the Isles if they lose Varly (65), Canes if they lose Raanta (60), Detroit (52), Caps if they package one of Samsonov or Vanecek for a forward (46). This pick is much harder to guess so I’m going to stick to saying a F unless there’s a faller on D.
THIS IS WHERE IM GOING TO LOSE PEOPLE!
5. Trade Dahlen for Puljujarvi. Puljujarvi has been victim to an absolute slam campaign by the Oilers media. According to some of the Oiler fans (pretty reliable), the specific media claiming these things are the ones that are basically the front office’s mouthpieces. Dahlen gives the Oilers cheap talent while Pulju gives us a different profile than Dahlen which we have too much of in Labanc, Eklund, Barabanov, Dahlen.
6. Trade Burns to Dallas for Radek Faksa, Anton Khudobin, 23 2nd, and Riley Damiani. Burns gets to link back up with PDB and Joe Pavelski and also apparently he owns a farm down there? Dallas gets to replace Klingberg with a guy DeBoer is familiar with and fits his system perfectly. We relocate the cap a bit, get out of Khudobin’s contract next season, pick up a good pick, and a good prospect that I think is pretty underrated.
7. Trade 23 4th for Ethan Bear’s rights. Carolina might be too smart for this but I’d try it anyway. That 4th is cheaper than the offersheets it would take for CAR not to match but heavily rumored Bear is “shopping himself” right now. Bear gives us a bit more of a stable presence than Burns on the right side.
8. Trade Balcers and Simek to a team for whatever
Puljujarvi-Hertl-Eklund
Timo-Couture-Barabanov
Gregor-Bordeleau-Faksa
Damiani-Reedy-Bonino
Nieto, Chmelevski
Knyzhov-EK
Ferraro-Bear
Vlasic-Merkley
Meloche
Kahkonen
Hill
This makes the team younger, faster, and better in transition. Faksa and Reedy can switch as well. The Sharks PP doesn’t really take a hit as you have both EK and Merkley as offensive D on that blue line. That first unit really stays close to the same with Timo, Couture, Hertl, EK all remaining the same but throw in Eklund there and see what he can do. Second unit is a bit different with Puljujarvi, Bordeleau, Barabanov, Merkley and I’d say Reedy to get someone in front of the net but Gregor, Bonino, Faksa all could slide in there. The PK is instantly stronger as Burns was a defensive liability even if his defensive struggles were overstated. Other than Hertl, Couture, and Timo who I’d personally prefer not on the PK but they can play it, you have Faksa, Gregor, Bonino, Reedy in who all played PK last year. I’d have Merkley and EK sit the PK out and the rest of the D out there.
This team is not very good in all honesty. They MIGHT squeak into the playoffs. Although EDM, LAK, and CGY all look like they will take the spots, they are all streaky and inconsistent. We do remain competitive and probably more competitive than last season. The one huge benefit of this team though for those rebuilder folks, one injury to Hertl, Timo, or EK and we bottom out. One of those guys hasn’t played over 56 games since 17-18. Either Merkley takes a HUGE step or when EK gets injured, we suck! Either one should make the rebuilder folks happy!
