Also, missing out is not failure - this isn't f***ing NHL 22, we can't just get anyone we want and it's not always down to moneys
you got JG at 10 million per year with guys like nemec, L hughes. mercer. etc etc etc. i think the devils feel they have their " core " guys. maybe I'm wrong but i think we didn't put up as big an offer or as long a term as some think.. and I'm totally fine with that. i would rather see bratt get a 7 yr reasonable deal.

You seem to have forgotten last year when the Devils spent a ton? Also if Fitzgerald were done for the day, he would have a media availability. He's not done.
LOL maybe he just didn’t want to answer questions about Erik Haula and Brendan Smith being his major acquisitions. Palat is still out there great, the Isles will overpay for him - he’s in Lou’s age bracket and is a winner - what then?

Almost like banking on UFA's like this shouldn't be a strategy. Trades and drafting is always the way to go. We make more sens than CBJ and the guy still had a Devils hatred boner take elsewhere.

FWIW Bob McKenzie speculated exactly this...he was wondering if perhaps JG or his agent severely misunderstood the Philly situation and thought they could make things work. He wondered if they knew how Philly never came close if he'd have stayed in Calgary.
Then why not re-sign in Calgary today like Stamkos did with Tampa?

Best info we have suggests we were over $10M.

If that's true and he took less to go to CBJ, I'm not sure how you can be upset,
If he really took less money not to go here why not just go back to Calgary hat in hand and take their $10 million plus for 7 years? Why less money to go to f***ing Columbus?!

Eh. I don't think there's too much to that. He could have just gone back to Calgary honestly - 8th year be darned, even after upsetting the Calgary faithful, they'd have taken him back no harm no foul. There was no need to put out the "he's leaving" last night. It told me he wanted out of Calgary and a new environment no matter what.

Because he's an idiot? Who knows? Players make weird decisions sometimes.

The top marginal income tax difference is like 6.5 points

Felt he was treated badly by the org maybe, or maybe he and his wife appreciate a climate at least 15 degrees warmer on average all winter, or maybe he just wants to be back in the good 'ol USA.

gotta think if Fitzgerald had any serious interest in Miller, it just shot up
Tarasenko is available, Necas is available. Tkachuk might become available. At the deadline, Patty Kane and Pastrnak may be available. Miller is just another name on that list.

My plan now would be to sign both Palat and Niederreiter and then plot the next move.
