NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

Lots of comments about his character and drive being extremely high.
I saw at the combine that he said he is working with a skating coach and that he believes one day he will be a really good skater. I'm not sure who the skating coach is though. It would be interesting to hear from an NHL executive what they think of his skating and how much improvement they believe he can realistically make. If McGroarty can become a very good skater like he thinks he can, then it makes it really interesting in projecting what his upside might look like.

I get the appeal of Wright on paper but he's been so underwhelming in all my viewings.

Would take Slafkovsky and Cooley over him. Just like their offensive upside more.
The issue with Wright is that he lost so much development time.
If a team that is good at developing their young players took him, he could be Sebastian Aho 2.0. If the wrong team takes him, he will be RNH 2.0. RNH is a good player, but at 1st overall you want a difference maker, not a 3rd line center.

What worries me with Wright has been the constant "he won't wow you" comments. Been hearing that about the kid for 2-3 years now. Yeah, a Bergeron type player is great and all, and was definitely worth it for Boston, but....it just feels more like an excuse for Wright (he is no Bergeron!). Like, we hyped up this kid since he was 14 and we need to justify it and his exceptional status kind of thing. First overall needs something in his game that brings the wow factor, imho.

He's going to be a good one in the NHL and all that, but I think a redraft in 2032 wouldn't have him in the top 2.

Reading the Black Book and the comments from scouts about Lian Bischel is eerily familiar to what was said about Boucher last year.

Basically scouts absolutely love him and are willing to overlook skill and IQ limitations because he's nasty and loves to blow up opposing players.

Potential trade down target for the Sens.

"And with the 7th overall pick the Ottawa Senators are proud to select..."

Ottawa is in a good position if they end up using their pick. Everyone from 7-26 is in the same range of player in my opinion.

There is good depth in this years draft class and i’m confident Ottawa will get a good player.

But what do you think of the guys ranked in the early 2nd cause apparently they're on the table for the sens in the top 10 :P

I understand you’re joking but you’re beating a dead horse at this point.
We get it. The Senators reached for almost their entire 2021 draft. The Senators had one draft where they went off the board for their picks. It was a season where alot of players didn’t play many games so it was the perfect season to shoot for the stars. Many acknowledged this fact at the time too.
The Ottawa Senators tried a little too hard to look like the smartest guy in the room however other than 2021 - the Senators tend to stay the course with their picks, especially their 1st rounders.

2020

Stutzle - Unanimous 2/3rd overall pick

2016
Logan Brown - went 11th

2015

Getting bored of accumulating the rankings so i’ll simplify the rest:

2013 - Lazar. Went around where he was ranked to

2012: Cody Ceci. Went right around where he was supposed to.

2011: Mika Zibenejad. Went right around where he was supposed to.

2010: Guys we wanted were off the board so we traded pick.

2009: Jared Cowan. Went right around where he was supposed to.

But to answer your question. I think this draft is deep and I quite like the prospects who are poised to go on day 2 of the draft.

I'd focus on the years Mann has ran the draft (2018-2021).

JBD, Thomson, Pinto, Jarventie, Boucher, Ostapchuk, Roger

All these guys were somewhat surprise selections where they were taken.

For better or for worse, the Sens staff under Mann doesn't think twice about reaching for a player they like relative to where the consensus thinks they should be selected.

Forgot about JBD. Good catch. Forgettable player I guess.

As for “reaching” with second round picks - I don’t mind it whatsoever. Scouting is very subjective and just because a public list says one thing. Doesn’t mean an internal scouting staff feel the same way.
I know people fall in love with the players that were supposed to be picked day 1 but fall to day 2 - and more often than not, these players show why they fell on draft night.

In my opinion, Ostapchuk wasn’t a reach, neither was Jarventie. Both guys went in the range of where they were expected to be drafted.

Me personally I have a tier of players in the 2022 draft between 26 and 67 where all the guys are similar quality to each other and I wouldn’t blame a GM for taking Logan Morrison (Who I have ranked 62nd) at 35. It’s very subjective when comparing such similar players.

The issue really is effort and compete level. I watched him too, I'd never draft him first OA. Why was he getting out worked by other OHLers? They all lost the same dev time. He has amazing pedigree but he literally regressed since his 15 year old year. That's not normal and frankly his playoff performance was pathetic. I've seen every excuse in the book. His coach, his development, he's injured etc. The only one I'm buying is he was hurt the rest of the excuses are bullshit. I really hope Montreal picks him.

Imagine where this team is if they just picked Miller and Sillinger. The concensus picks in their spots. Who seemingly have all the characteristic of the sens picks too. Miller is the biggest miss of all. He is trending towards being a franchise D in the mold of Hedman.

Personally I don't trust our scouting staff either. I like Mann and his instincts I think he needs more resources and a more stable GM.

I still can't believe people want to trade the pick either.

What parts of his game did he work on this year? That’s just a buzz phrase with no substance or evidence form the games whatsoever.

The aspect he needed to work on was his offence, and that never happened. We know he can skate and hit, that’s nothing new.
From my viewings of Boucher with the 67s I saw a player that shows flashes of skill and creativity but far too infrequently. I think his biggest problem was/is there are far too many shifts where he does nothing at all and is the definition of passenger. The guy needs to bring a hell of a lot more consistent intensity. I’m giving him a pass on this year but he better show better shift to shift than he did this year.

I wouldn’t trade the pick for a F but a young top 4 D would be worth it IMO.

Seems like Sportnet gets a lot of there rankings from the Sens scouts
