NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

the "issue" I personally have with this is that we aren't likely to attract free agents talented enough to push us over the edge. I fear we are only going to secure one of our 2 glaring holes in the lineup... and if we trade Brown this summer that leaves another hole.

for instance, I am terrified that we trade 7th for Fiala, and he just signs his qualifying offer and leaves as a UFA next year. Then we don't pick up a top 4 D and we are left in the same position next off-season as we are currently, needing a top 4 d and a top 6 F... but now we've also lost our best penalty killer (Brown).

Also, looking at the last 15 years of #7 picks, I really don't think the franchise can afford to miss out on a player like that. I'm not saying that we have a guaranteed star or player of the calibre of all those 7th overalls, just that the risk is suuuuuper high...

I feel like everyone is looking at the Rangers and thinking we can replicate them. Except the Rangers have the luxury of Panarin and Trouba and Fox "only" wanting to go there. Imagine just being able to sign a point per game winger and a norris calibre defenseman...
As well as winning 2 lotteries haha. I hate that.

Imagine where this team is if they just picked Miller and Sillinger. The concensus picks in their spots. Who seemingly have all the characteristic of the sens picks too. Miller is the biggest miss of all. He is trending towards being a franchise D in the mold of Hedman.
If we did, we'd already have the top 6 F and top 4 D that Dorion is looking to trade for this summer.

If we manage to land a star at 7, like Barzal/Hughes/Keller, is that enough to make the sens a legit contender?

For reference for those who want to trade the pick, here are the past 10 years of guys picked between 6-8.

Considering the ELC control and contract costs of whoever we acquire, I think I'd rather just roll the dice and draft it.

2012: Lindholm, Dumba, Pouliot
2013: Monahan, Nurse, Ristolainen
2014: Virtanen, Fleury, W. Nylander
2015: Zacha, Provorov, Werenski
2016: Tkachuk, Keller, A. Nylander
2017: Glass, Andersson, Mittelstadt
2018: Zadina, Hughes, Boqvist
2019: Seider, Cozens, Broberg
2020: Drysdale, Holtz, Quinn
2021: Edvinsson, Eklund, Clark

Maybe, but we aren’t really one player away. It sort of depends on various factors. Do any of our players become league-wide superstars? If so how many? Is Forsberg a true #1? If not is it Gus or Soogard or do we not have one? How quickly do Sanderson, Pinto, Greig and this 7th overall pick develop? Do we acquire another top 4D? Do we keep Zub?

We’re probably not a legit contender unless most if not all these things go correctly.

Don't know if that has been posted but I think some might find this interesting (let me know with likes!)

It is a consolidated list of 2022 NHL pre-Draft rankings. It includes those from Dobber, Smaht Scouting, Sam Cosentino, Future Considerations, Yahoo, THW’s Peter Baracchini, THW’s Ryan Kennedy, Montreal Hockey Now’s Marco D’Amico , Last Word On Sports, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler, The Athletic’s Corey Pronman, Craig Button, EliteProspects, Recruit Scouting, and Draft Pro.

The Top-5 seems clear (Shane Wright, Logan Cooley, Juraj Slafkovský, Simon Nemec and David Jiricek). After that :

6- Matthew Savoie
7- Joakim Kemell
8- Jonathan Lekkerimäki
9- Frank Nazar
10- Danila Yurov
11- Cutter Gauthier
12- Brad Lambert

I'd be very happy with Kemell or Lekkerimäki. If they take someone else, they better not bouchered it up

I don't know but :

Keller - Stutzle - Batherson
Tkachuk - Norris - Joseph
Formenton - Pinto - Brown
Kelly - Kastelic - White
Watson/Gambrell

It doesn't fix the whole ownership/management/coaching trifecta but it's a good start, no?

Thomas Chabot is already a league-wide superstar IMO but the problem is he has played with way below average players for most of his career, particularly on defense (keep in mind we're comparing with the quality of teammates other superstars play with)

Tim Stutzle is at the door of stardom, he had 31 pts in his last 27 games as a young 20 y/o and his game is rapidly evolving

Josh Norris paced for 43 freaking goals. He is tied for the 12th highest Goals-Per-Game since March 15th 2021 with Mikko Rantanen and Matt Duchene. Are these guys superstars? No but they're huge stars.

What about Drake Batherson and Brady Tkachuk? Jake Sanderson?

I also think Pinto will be a Danault level player (different but similar level) but Greig is my call for someone who will shock people.

I'm happy with Forsberg/Gustavsson as a duo while Sogaard develops, I think he'll be a beast. I have the same "scouting feeling" as I had with Lehner but Mads is more athletic, Robin is too huge lol

I think we'll be very well equipped in terms of hockey personnel, it's everything else that I am worried about... Ownership, management, coaching, arena, etc etc

I don’t really disagree or anything, but things happen. Players stagnate, injuries etc… our roster has the potential to be pretty special but until the scenarios actually play out I don’t think it’s ever as simple as one player. My point was moreso that it just comes down to whether things progress as we expect them to a lot more than the 7th overall pick.

Injuries derailed things for us before so unfortunately it can always happen, but we can't look at it with that kind of scenario, just gotta hope things go well in that regard. Last season was painful for that, hopefully we get a bit of break

Let's say the players we saw evolve in the recent past continue on their path and that a few players emerge : Jake Sanderson, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Shane Pinto and Ridly Greig (pretty much our top-4 prospects), oh and let's say Mads Sogaard too (we're talking within 2-3 seasons of course)

Greig - Stutzle - Batherson
Tkachuk - Norris - Joseph
Formenton - Pinto - Brown
Crookshank - Kastelic - Boucher
Kelly

Chabot - JBD
Sanderson - Zub
Brannstrom - Thomson
Kleven

Sogaard
Forsberg/Gustavsson

That's without the 7th OA pick. Anyway, we need to see what happens this summer first, the draft, the free agency and then what happens with ownership...

Go off the board and get Lambert.
Highly doubt the Sens have any interest in Lambert and if I were a betting man, i'd bet he'd be on the Sens do not draft list. We're a team that puts a premium on what type of person you are, at times favoring it over what type of player you are.

I wouldn't mind Nazar at #7 - I think that is a perfectly acceptable range where he should be drafted but I have some questions about his game.

I find he at times takes shifts off and doesn't play hard and is just floating around the ice, awaiting an outlet pass for a breakout - some have said he is excellent defensively but I question his defensive awareness and think there is a lot of room for improvement in this regard.

I also find he isn't good at taking any sort of physical contact at all and would lose the puck with the most minute contact. I also found he is very susceptible to losing the puck in transition -There were also instances where had trouble corraling easy passes in the games I watched. Was frustrating to watch at times.

He has character concerns - and Ottawa doesn't take these type of players in the first round. He is this years Josh Ho-Sang.
